Chapter 28: Let Me Handle That Villager 4

Yan Bai looked up at him with wide eyes, shining like stars, full of anticipation and asked:

    "Is it sweet?"

Luo Shuisheng nodded. Though his mouth was sweet, his heart felt inexplicably sour. He spoke with some difficulty,

    "Sweet."

Yan Bai smiled, his smile sweeter than honey, and pulled a handful of fruit candies from his pocket, stuffing them into Luo Shuisheng's jacket pocket.

"If you like them, have more. Sharing doubles the joy."

Sharing? That was a novel concept.

Luo Shuisheng initially wanted to refuse, but whether his movements were too slow or his heart truly longed for that sweetness, the fruit candies in their plastic wrappers ended up in his pocket.

He self-consciously covered his pocket and after a moment said:

"Thank you. Do you like braised rabbit?"

Yan Bai was caught off guard by the sudden question.

    "I quite like it."

Luo Shuisheng nodded and said nothing more, simply following behind Yan Bai.

Yan Bai was puzzled but didn't dwell on it. Just then, Nine-Tails informed him:

"Gu Xiangdong has already picked up the package and returned to the ox cart.

It was very heavy, and it took him a great deal of effort. The post office is quite far from the ox cart.

Hehehe, he really gave it his all and is still catching his breath."

Yan Bai raised an eyebrow. Their current location was quite close to the ox cart. Thinking that the villain's younger brother must be suffering and Luo Shuisheng surely wanted to get him medicine as soon as possible, Yan Bai didn't delay any further and led him to the ox cart.

In the distance, Yan Bai saw Gu Xiangdong leaning against the ox cart with one hand, breathing heavily.

At his feet was a large, tightly wrapped parcel.

Yan Bai walked over and patted Gu Xiangdong on the back.

"Thank you for picking up my parcel. You can hand it over to me now."

Startled by guilt, Gu Xiangdong jumped. He turned around and looked at Yan Bai with disbelief.

    Yan Bai feigned innocence.

"It's my hand that's hurt, not my feet. I felt like coming, so I came."

Gu Xiangdong suddenly noticed Luo Shuisheng standing behind Yan Bai and grew extremely anxious.

His original plan was to strike up a conversation with Luo Shuisheng on the return trip in the ox cart and seize the opportunity to give him the medicine.

He intended to pass the parcel off as his own—after all, Luo Shuisheng wouldn't know.

Moreover, he planned to rummage through the parcel before returning to the Educated Youth settlement, keeping the good stuff for himself, leaving a little for Yan Bai, and then rewrapping it so no one would notice it had been opened.

But now, Yan Bai had actually shown up, and Luo Shuisheng was here too. There was no way to carry out his plan now.

Gu Xiangdong was internally frantic but had to maintain appearances with the two.

"Luo Shuisheng, how come you're with Yan Bai? Did you just run into each other?"

Luo Shuisheng gave a slight nod and said nothing more. This Educated Youth Gu had always looked down on him; Luo Shuisheng had long been familiar with the contempt in his eyes and had no desire to engage with him now.

Yan Bai glanced back and forth between the two, a smile curling his lips. He had already found a task for Luo Shuisheng.

"Luo Shuisheng, lift the luggage onto the ox cart. I'll get the medicine for you. You can take it back first for your brother. I'll wait and return with the ox cart in the evening."

The ox cart's return time was fixed for 5 p.m., and it was only noon now. Luo Shuisheng clearly couldn't wait that long.

Luo Shuisheng looked at the woven bag, stuffed to the point of bursting and sewn shut with thread.

"If we open it now, with so many things inside, we might not be able to repack it properly later."

Yan Bai hesitated for a moment. That was true.

"It's fine, I can figure something out. Your brother's illness is more urgent."

Luo Shuisheng lifted the parcel with one hand to gauge its weight.

"It's alright, not too heavy. I'll carry your things back to the village for you. Then you can unpack the medicine later. But can you walk back to the village?"

"I walked here, so of course I can walk back. But this package weighs dozens of pounds, and the village is over ten kilometers away. Are you sure you can manage it?"

Even a simple, honest villager couldn't accept such doubt.

Without another word, he picked up the bag, slung it onto his back, and started walking forward.

The parcel was originally quite large, but perhaps because Luo Shuisheng was so tall and burly, it seemed to shrink and lighten on his back.

Yan Bai's parents, worried he might have trouble carrying it, had specially sewn two handles onto the woven bag, which now came in handy for Luo Shuisheng.

Luo Shuisheng walked with powerful, effortless strides.

Yan Bai smiled and followed behind. Gu Xiangdong was completely flustered and hurried after them.

"I happen to have nothing to do. I'll go back to the village with you."

Yan Bai shot him a sidelong glance, a cold smirk flashing briefly before he said nothing, curious to see what tricks Gu Xiangdong would try next.

Seeing Yan Bai catch up, Luo Shuisheng slowed his pace to wait for him and took the bag of snacks from his hand.

"I'll carry it. Isn't your hand injured?"

Yan Bai felt a sweet warmth inside. Nine-Tails' teeth were practically aching from envy.

"You've only just met, and he's already this attentive. I don't think this guy is any good!"

Yan Bai gave a mental flick, sending Nine-Tails tumbling head over heels.

"A fox judging people? I think you're just sour grapes talking.

Speaking of which, as a system without a physical form, you can't even date. Must be feeling lonely and cold, huh?"

The nine-tailed fox got up, its rebellious spirit flaring up again.

"Who says I can't fall in love? My man is as manly as they come!"

Yan Bai sneered dismissively, showing no sign of belief.

The nine-tailed fox felt wronged and miserable. It just wanted to drag Mu Yuyun out for a walk...

After teasing the little fox, Yan Bai turned his attention back to flirting with Luo Shuisheng.

"Luo Shuisheng, you're so strong. You work out a lot, don't you?"

Luo Shuisheng's mouth twitched in a wry smile.

"If cutting brambles in the mountains and hauling bricks at the brick kiln count as working out, then yeah, I guess I do it a lot."

Yan Bai felt as if struck by lightning. He had been treating his time in this village like a game, skimming through the original host's memories and viewing everyone and everything in this little world with a playful attitude.

Yet, for the people living in this small world, this was their entire existence. The hardships Luo Shuisheng endured were all too real.
