Chapter 39 Put Down That Country Bumpkin, Let Me Do It 15
by 墨烟青花Chapter 39: Hands Off That Villager, I'll Handle It (15)
When Yan Bai arrived at the village committee, the village chief had also just gotten there. Yan Bai spoke frankly:
"Village Chief, I wanted to ask if I could move out of the educated youth dormitory and live with a local family."
Feng Aiguo had come prepared and immediately feigned great reluctance.
"I know some educated youths have moved out, but they either got married or got married themselves. You're still young and aren't in that situation. It would be difficult for me to approve you moving out!"
Yan Bai sneered inwardly and spoke to Nine-Tailed Fox in his mind.
"Is that the PA system button behind him? Sneak over and turn it on. I want to make sure Feng Aiguo can't interfere."
Nine-Tailed Fox immediately went and twisted the switch open, eagerly adding,
"Once the broadcast is on, Feng Aiguo will notice the amplified sound as soon as he speaks. I'll put up a sound barrier so no sound from outside gets in."
Yan Bai gave him a mental thumbs-up.
"I take back what I said before about you being useless."
Nine-Tailed Fox gritted his teeth...
Yan Bai said solemnly,
"We educated youths came to the countryside to learn from the poor and lower-middle peasants, to become good friends with them. How can we become good friends without getting to know them deeply?
I want to move to Luo Shuisheng's house also because we shouldn't chase after comfort; we should help the most difficult families in the village.
Village Chief, do you think my thinking is wrong?"
Yan Bai's voice, broadcast over the loudspeakers, echoed through the whole village. Everyone found themselves standing at their doors to listen.
Of course, Feng Aiguo had no idea. He was still trying to stall.
"Educated Youth Yan having such awareness is certainly good and correct.
But I'm also concerned for you. Luo Shuisheng's family is too poor, and there are two young children. Wouldn't you just be miserable there?
Why don't you consider moving to my house instead? You could... help me out?"
"Village Chief, you're already well-off; otherwise, how could you become a leader?
Moreover, your family's living conditions are so good. How could I experience the hardships of poor and lower-middle peasant life if I lived there?
How could I make progress?"
Seeing they were alone, Feng Aiguo's tone became flirtatious.
"Silly child, going to the hardest place doesn't need to be you.
Yan Bai, you're so soft and delicate, you've never known hardship, have you?
I really can't bear to see you cutting thorny grass and moving bricks every day.
That Luo Shuisheng, to support his younger siblings, doesn't rest even during the agricultural slack season, doing these jobs every day just to barely have enough to eat. How could I bear to let you suffer like that?
Look at your soft, pale hands..."
After saying this, Feng Aiguo made a move to touch him. Yan Bai took two steps back in disgust.
He signaled Nine-Tailed Fox to drop the barrier.
"It's precisely because I've never suffered hardship before that I now insist on going to the hardest place. Without experiencing the farmers' bitterness, how can I roll up my sleeves and help build a new countryside?"
Feng Aiguo was stunned. How did the broadcast turn on by itself? Yan Bai's voice came through; surely the whole village heard it.
Feng Aiguo felt a pang of fear. Luckily, his own voice hadn't been transmitted just now, or it would have been inappropriate.
He immediately composed himself, his tone becoming much more proper.
"Since Educated Youth Yan is determined to go, our village committee certainly supports it. I have some paperwork to process for you. You can move in three days!"
Then he pretended to be somewhat surprised.
"Oh my, how did this broadcast turn on by itself? Did a mouse touch the button? Let me turn it off first."
Nine-Tailed Fox, who was called a mouse, was fuming, rushing forward wanting to scratch Feng Aiguo's face.
If Yan Bai hadn't acted instantly, grabbing him back into his consciousness, Feng Aiguo would have had his face scratched up.
Yan Bai soothed the furious fox.
"What's the hurry? Scratching such trash would dirty your own claws. I'll definitely make him pay. Just wait."
Nine-Tailed Fox whimpered, almost moved to tears. The Demon Lord could be human sometimes!
Seeing he had achieved the desired effect, Yan Bai turned and left without even saying goodbye.
Feng Aiguo...
This Educated Youth Yan is quite a spicy one!
While Feng Aiguo was still lost in his fantasies, the villagers were in an uproar.
Who would have thought the village chief was such a hypocrite? How could someone with such ideological awareness be fit to be village chief?
Luo Shuisheng's face was also dark. The ambiguity in Feng Aiguo's words might not be noticed by those who didn't think much about it, but he, having just awakened to love, suddenly became extremely sensitive. He immediately sensed that Feng Aiguo's unusual concern for Yan Bai had ulterior motives.
Furious, he threw a wooden board in his hand to the ground, instantly feeling the urge to beat someone up.
Luo Shuisheng's expression was terrifying. He already looked somewhat fierce, and now, burning with anger, he was even more frightening.
But he wasn't a reckless brute. Beating someone up needed a suitable opportunity. Acting impulsively would only make things worse. If something happened to him, what would happen to the two children? What would happen to Yan Bai?
The man definitely needed a beating, but it had to be carefully planned.
Later, hearing that Yan Bai had settled it, his anger subsided a little.
Yan Bai was also thoroughly disgusted by Feng Aiguo and hurried back to see his dear boyfriend to cleanse his eyes.
This Feng Aiguo looked decent on the outside but was truly no good.
"Nine-Tailed Fox, go check his accounts and search his house. See if there's any leverage."
Nine-Tailed Fox immediately perked up, full of motivation.
"The Demon Lord is planning to start scheming against someone again. I fully support scheming against Feng Aiguo. I'll go right away."
Nine-Tailed Fox vanished in a flash, taking off like a shot.
Yan Bai was speechless—this fox really held a grudge!
When Yan Bai returned to the Luo household, Luo Shuisheng seemed perfectly calm, sanding down a desktop in the yard.
He had made it specifically for Yan Bai early that morning.
Seeing a few books in Yan Bai’s luggage, he thought someone who read a lot needed a proper desk.
He had seen a similar style in the county town before, so he made one himself out of wood.
However, the wood was pretty rough and needed careful sanding to avoid any splinters.
Yan Bai stepped up and patted the smooth desktop.
“Is this for Shi An and Xiao Tao’er to study at? The craftsmanship is really good!”
He paused.
“I noticed you enjoy reading, so I made it for you.”
Yan Bai looked up at the man bent over his work, a smile tugging at his lips.
“This desk is a bit small for four people. I’ve already written to my parents asking them to send me some textbooks. I plan to set aside two hours every evening to teach Xiao Tao’er and Shi An.
The rest of the time, I’ll study on my own. Since all three of us will be learning, you can’t just sit idle—you’ll join us and read along.”
Luo Shuisheng’s hands stilled. He lifted his head to look at Yan Bai, his gaze flickering.
“You want to teach them to read?”
Yan Bai smiled brightly at him.
“Yes. I don’t have many other skills, and you handle all the household chores. I ought to contribute something to this family.
In the society of the future, not knowing how to read or write will put you at a disadvantage.”
