Chapter 28 He’s My Ex-Husband’s Friend
byChapter 28: He Is My Ex-Husband's Friend
Zhao Jinzong's chest nearly pressed against Chen Su's badge, so close that their breaths seemed to intertwine. Chen Su lifted his head slightly. "Nothing."
Zhao Jinzong: "Mm."
Ning Congnan withdrew his hand that had been suspended in midair, forcing a smile. "Senior, do you know General Director Zhao?"
Zhao Jinzong's gaze fixed on Chen Su's lips.
Chen Su nodded slightly. "Yes."
Zhao Jinzong chuckled, bent down, and pulled out a silk handkerchief to wipe the smudge off Chen Su's shoe.
Ning Congnan watched the Enigma bending over to clean Chen Su's shoes, feeling somewhat... stunned. The esteemed General Director Zhao would actually stoop to cleaning someone's shoes...
But if it were Chen Su, it seemed plausible.
Chen Su had joined the Drug Supervision Bureau late and had previously worked at the Detection Bureau. Many didn't know about Chen Su's talent, but Ning Congnan knew. Chen Su was the most gifted student his father (Supervisor Ning) had ever mentored. After taking a year off in high school, he still got into Jing University with top scores, was guaranteed admission to a master's program, and starting in his second year of grad school, he worked on experiments alongside Supervisor Ning's PhD students.
Back then, for his graduation thesis, Supervisor Ning just skimmed the formatting. When Supervisor Ning got headaches from his PhD students' theses, he'd just toss them to Chen Su. Not a single student under Supervisor Ning wasn't in awe of Chen Su... Ning Congnan had seen those scenes of people asking for advice, and had even been one of those people. But he was younger, still a senior in undergrad, and Chen Su had mentored his thesis.
With so many brilliant young talents around Chen Su, how could he possibly remember him?
Ning Congnan had worked so hard just to barely match Chen Su's level. If Chen Su hadn't skipped the Drug Supervision Bureau selection exam because of his brother, maybe Ning Congnan would barely have had a chance to talk to him now... It was no surprise someone like him got special treatment.
Zhao Jinzong stood up, handkerchief in hand, glanced at Ning Congnan, and said to Chen Su, "Want to have dinner together tonight?"
Sunlight hit Chen Su's head, a light sweat on his pale, delicate face. He pursed his thin lips. "Okay."
Zhao Jinzong gave a faint smile, his chest nearly grazing Chen Su's shoulder as he turned and left.
Chen Su gave Ning Congnan a tour, then headed back to the lab. Along the way, Ning Congnan hesitated before finally asking, "Senior, how did you get to know General Director..."
"He's my ex-husband's friend."
"..." Ning Congnan sucked in a sharp breath and didn't ask more.
Ning Congnan knew a bit about Chen Su's ex-husband, Sheng Beiqing. Back then, Chen Su jumped headfirst into marriage, but the other guy didn't even give him a wedding. It seemed those two years in the Sheng family were rough, but at least he was out of that mess now.
Ning Congnan was on a project far from Chen Su's lab. At noon, he took the initiative to find Chen Su so they could go to the cafeteria together. Chen Su frowned as he came out of the lab, and said coldly, "I'm busy."
"Oh... Senior, what do you want? I'll bring it to you."
Chen Su's temples pulsed. "With your talent, if you'd spent this extra time on experiments, I wouldn't have been so exasperated by your thesis back then."
"...Senior, you remember me?"
"Just remembered. Quite a shock."
"…………"
Ning Congnan couldn't manage a smile anymore.
"Go eat. That's probably the most important thing for you right now."
Chen Su turned and went back into the lab.
Meng Suizhi passed by: "..."
Ning Congnan met Meng Suizhi's eyes. "...Deputy Meng."
Meng Suizhi looked Ning Congnan over. "Was your thesis really that bad?"
"...It wasn't that bad."
"Oh, what was your research on? How shocking was it?"
"…………I forgot." Ning Congnan walked off with a sullen face.
...
Ten minutes later, the door to Chen Su's lab opened.
Someone in a General Bureau uniform came in and set a lunchbox on the table. As Chen Su came out, the guy grinned and said, "General Director Zhao asked me to bring this for you."
"Okay, thanks."
"No problem. Deputy Sheng used to look out for me."
"I have nothing to do with him anymore."
Chen Su's tone was ice cold.
The alpha realized he'd upset Chen Su, but still felt a bit sorry for Sheng Beiqing. He left scowling.
Chen Su sat down to eat. His phone buzzed—a text from Zhao Jinzong: "Finish it."
Chen Su looked at the lunchbox—way too much food.
Chen Su: "I can't finish it."
Zhao Jinzong: "What are you mad about?"
Chen Su froze for a moment, then instinctively turned to look back. No one was outside the lab's glass window.
Chen Su: "I'm not mad."
Zhao Jinzong: "Liar."
Chen Su: "Send someone else next time."
Zhao Jinzong: "Next time I'll come."
Chen Su: "No need."
...
Chen Su ate, then buried himself in his experiments. When it was time to leave, a dark silhouette stood outside the glass window near the door. Chen Su quickly changed and opened the door.
Ning Congnan stood at the door with a stack of papers. "Senior."
"..." Chen Su rubbed his forehead. "Mm-hmm."
Ning Congnan handed him the papers. "Senior, this is my grad thesis. I've improved a lot."
Chen Su gave it a quick glance. "Doctor Ning must have worked hard."
Ning Congnan: "…………"
Is it that bad?
It's not that bad, is it?
Ning Congnan hung his head, thinking it over, following Chen Su all the way to the entrance of the Drug Supervision Bureau. Chen Su turned around and asked, "Is there something else?"
Ning Congnan came to. "My dad asked me to invite you to dinner at our place this weekend."
"Dinner's not necessary. I'll go visit Supervisor Ning this weekend."
"Okay."
A black Rolls-Royce pulled up to Chen Su. The door opened, revealing Zhao Jinzong sitting in the back seat. His brow was slightly furrowed, his features handsome, but complex emotions churned in his eyes, anger barely hidden. When his gaze fell on Ning Congnan, a faint smirk curled his lips. "Are you done talking?"
It was unclear whether he was asking Chen Su or Ning Congnan. Ning Congnan shuddered, a chill running down his spine...
