Chapter 252
by 运粮仓鼠Chapter 252
From the Goddess of Light, to the God of War, to the Nature God, when they were in a desperate situation, the students vividly remembered the content related to various churches that the balding old professor had recited in a sleep-inducing tone during history class.
After praying, a bitter taste lingered in their hearts.
Humans, when oppressed to the extreme, were indeed able to unleash their potential. Some deities, whom they had completely forgotten about in their daily lives, now appeared clearly in their minds.
Unfortunately, even in extreme panic, there were knowledge points that they just couldn't recall.
However, even in this 'life-or-death moment', the students' eyes couldn't help but constantly glance towards the glass house that had oddly appeared in the beast pet shop.
The location where they gathered was actually quite far from the beast storage.
But even from a distance, as long as it was within sight, who could ignore the gleaming glass house?
At first, they thought the glimmer was just due to the reflection of sunlight off the glass, making it appear to shine from their angle.
However, even though they were still students, they were practitioners after all, with exceptionally good eyesight.
So, it didn't take long for everyone to realize that what they had seen wasn't the reflection of sunlight on the glass, but rather the glass house itself or something inside it was truly emitting light.
If this had been in another place, such an anomaly would have barely registered with these students.
After all, this was a world where magic existed, and those mages could easily create such effects.
Many people familiar with these things had become completely immune to the flashing signs, passing by without giving them any extra attention.
This wasn't the streets of the Congress of Magic; this was a beast pet shop. The students couldn't recall any of the flashy things typical of the Congress of Magic being present here.
In their impression, Lorant seemed to dislike such flashy things.
Moreover, given the rapid pace at which new beast pets were introduced in the shop, anything unfamiliar or puzzling the students encountered would immediately be classified as a new beast pet in their minds.
The allure of new beast pets was undeniable. The knights were recalling their knowledge points, but their eyes were uncontrollably drawn to that captivating house.
This continued until Taya appeared before them and led them to the side of that eye-catching glass house.
This action instantly excited many of those present.
Generally, before class, Taya and Mike would take them to the location closest to their classroom, making it convenient for Lorant to start teaching directly afterward.
If it was a class related to the Glassy Ice Flame Dog, the two assistants would take them to the vicinity of the Glassy Ice Flame Dog's territory. But today, they were brought to the side of this glass house. Did this mean that in this class, Lorant was going to teach them about these never-before-seen beast pets?
As Lorant's students, they had indeed seen many beast pets in the shop that ordinary people couldn't access. Before the candy rabbit was officially released, the students had already seen those magical beast pets in the shop.
There was also a type of beast pet that had not yet been officially announced by the shop. That huge beast pet that could 'float' and 'swim' in the air was not unfamiliar to these students at all.
Which student hadn't enjoyed a thoughtful drink delivered by the floating octopuses while resting in the shop?
Although if asked, Lorant's answer would always be that this was a beast pet that had issues during breeding. After personally experiencing it, each student had their own thoughts.
This beast pet seemed to be smarter than they had expected.
However, these students still had no evidence to prove the uniqueness of the floating octopuses, and the beast pet shop had gradually accumulated power to a point where an ordinary organization couldn't hope to interfere.
Even the three major organizations had to carefully consider whether they had the capability to take over the beast pet shop under the noses of the other two organizations.
As the students were quietly discussing, Lorant pushed open the door of the glass house and walked out.
"Long time no see, everyone!" Lorant, wearing a Victorian-style plaid vest today, wiped his hands and smiled as he spoke to his students.
He had just been tidying up the nests for the Lightwing Butterflies. All of the Lightwing Butterflies now had their own homes.
The nests, which hung from the Moonlight Vines Lorant had specially prepared, resembled small, round eggshells—each one looking like a cute little night light.
Lorant had already chosen several colors he liked and hung a beautifully crafted Moonlight Vine on the wall of his bedroom for decoration.
When the Lightwing Butterflies folded their wings and settled into their nests, they transformed into glowing little eggshells.
Moreover, depending on the wing colors of the Lightwing Butterflies that took up residence, the eggshells would emit different lights. Lorant chose several warm yellow-winged butterflies to make his 'night lights' feel cozier.
While the Lightwing Butterflies loved these eggshell nests, they did have some drawbacks.
Since the entire nest was woven from a plant-based creature that had been treated with a special technique, maintaining a state that the Lightwing Butterflies liked required regularly spraying these 'little eggshells' with a special mist to keep the nests active.
Lorant had just finished doing that.
"Good day, teacher, long time no see!" The knights, always ready, snapped to attention and greeted Lorant in unison.
Maomao, who had been playing with a Lightwing Butterfly on the grass, was startled by the sudden noise.
It stumbled, its hind paws nearly stepping on its front paws that it hadn’t retracted in time, and the entire Glassy Ice Flame Dog went face-first onto the ground.
It was a perfect nose dive.
The Lightwing Butterfly, which had been flying ahead, paused mid-air, then flew back in disbelief, landing on Maomao’s nose. It fluttered its wings and hopped around, its tiny claws tapping playfully on Maomao’s snout, as if mocking the dog’s clumsy tumble.
Maomao's beautiful eyes were fixed on the smug little Qing and Little Black on its nose.
It glanced at the students not far away, knowing that the commotion earlier hadn't been deliberately caused by them, and even a proud dog king wouldn't have a proper target to vent his anger on.
So, with a mischievous intent, the proud dog king suddenly stuck out its tongue and gave it a sudden, vigorous lick.
Glowing Wing Butterfly: "..."
Glowing Wing Butterfly: "!?"
The thoroughly drenched Glowing Wing Butterfly sprang up, angrily flapping its wings in an attempt to slap the mischievous Glassy Ice Flame Dog.
Maomao remained completely unfazed. It lay down on the ground, showing that it was content to stay where it fell, and the mischievous king of dogs closed its eyes with a hint of enjoyment, leisurely feeling the warmth brought by the flapping wings of the Glowing Wing Butterfly.
The tiny Glowing Wing Butterfly, even though angry, couldn't hurt the other even a single bit.
The angry Glowing Wing Butterfly tried to attack with its fragile body, resembling a small missile. It suddenly folded its wings and slammed onto Maomao's face.
Unfortunately, apart from exhausting itself, it seemed to have no effect at all.
Maomao's eyes drooped, and it was almost asleep.
Lorant, listening to the whispered complaint in his ear, couldn't help but twitch his mouth.
Although the romantic scene he had envisioned of the dog chasing butterflies had finally appeared, it was slightly different from what he had imagined.
But those were unimportant details.
Lorant ignored the Glowing Wing Butterfly's frustrated mood and thought to himself silently.
"Are you all curious about what's inside this glass room behind me?" Snapping back to attention, Lorant first noticed the expectant looks in his students' eyes.
Gabriel and the others nodded vigorously.
They were incredibly curious.
From a distance earlier, the students had already come up with countless ideas, and upon approaching, they were surprised to find that those glowing objects in the glass room seemed to be beautiful, exquisite wings!
No matter how they looked at them, these wings appeared to have a life of their own, especially with how flexible their flight paths were.
These glowing wings were undoubtedly from a type of beast pet they had never seen before!
Lorant smiled and gently pulled open the glass door, his fingers slightly curved in front of him.
Without any extra effort, a Lightwing Butterfly gracefully fluttered its wings and perched on his slender, pale fingers.
Lorant was clearly prepared. With one hand holding the Lightwing Butterfly, he pressed a button on a bracelet on his wrist. The next second, a large magic screen, tall enough to cover a person, unfolded in front of the butterfly.
The image of the Lightwing Butterfly was magnified countless times on the screen, allowing all the students to easily see every intricate pattern on its body.
"This is the latest beast pet I've bred," Lorant said gently, looking at the Lightwing Butterfly on his finger as it curiously observed the group of students. "I call this beautiful creature the Lightwing Butterfly."
"Similar to the Dream Weaver, the Lightwing Butterfly is also a support-type beast pet and not good at combat," Lorant continued, gesturing to the butterfly's delicate body on the screen. "You can probably tell yourselves."
"However, the loss of combat ability is compensated by the Lightwing Butterfly's powerful support capabilities."
"The Lightwing Butterfly in my hand provides a threefold increase in strength. Is there any student who would like to come up and experience it?"
Before Lorant even finished speaking, the students eagerly raised their arms.
They were practically bouncing with excitement, like kids waiting for candy.
Looking around, Lorant caught sight of the familiar Gabriel and smiled at him. "Gabriel, how about you give it a try?"
Gabriel felt a surge of joy inside. He suppressed his urge to cheer and walked up, trying to appear calm.
Under the envious stares of his classmates, Lorant slightly lifted his finger, and the Lightwing Butterfly, as if sensing his intention, fluttered its wings and gracefully landed on Gabriel's shoulder.
Although the Lightwing Butterfly was tiny and light, almost as if it didn't exist, when it landed on Gabriel's shoulder, the sturdy knight instinctively held his breath and stiffened.
If it had been any other beast pet, Gabriel wouldn't have reacted so intensely. But the Lightwing Butterfly was extremely fragile. From a distance, he hadn't fully realized this, but now that it was on him, Gabriel quickly understood the reality.
He could only breathe more gently and carefully turned his head to look at the Lightwing Butterfly on his shoulder, which was also curiously observing him.
Unlike the nervous Gabriel, the Lightwing Butterfly seemed completely at ease.
Through various experiments, the Lightwing Butterflies had grown accustomed to humans. Every person they encountered showed the same mix of fear and unease, which only reinforced the butterflies' understanding of these emotionally fragile creatures.
It extended a delicate leg and gently brushed Gabriel's cheek, offering a friendly greeting.
Lorant watched as the Lightwing Butterfly seemed to calm Gabriel, then turned his attention back to the students.
"Alright, as you can all see, the Lightwing Butterfly is a creature like this, but each one's wings have slightly different patterns and glows," Lorant explained, lightly stroking the butterfly's illusory wings. His voice reached the large group of students who were holding their breath in concentration, just as Gabriel had involuntarily done.
"So far, no two Lightwing Butterflies are exactly alike. Even those with the same abilities have unique patterns and glows."
"Now, let me show you what the Lightwing Butterfly can do," Lorant said as he made a gesture towards Gabriel.
Gabriel stood there, looking puzzled, unsure of what Lorant was asking him to do.
The Light-Winged Butterfly on his shoulder instantly understood and spread its wings at once.
The light became instantly brighter, and the Light-Winged Butterfly, its wings now several times larger, appeared even more dreamlike than before.
With its enormous wings and dreamy glow, the butterfly looked like an elf that had descended from the heavens.
The students, all mesmerized and stunned by the beauty of the sight, watched in awe.
Lorant clapped his hands, snapping everyone out of their trance.
"Alright, Gabriel, can you feel any difference in your body now?"
Gabriel, unaware of the beautiful creature resting on his shoulder, was the least affected by the visual spectacle.
As soon as the Light-Winged Butterfly activated its ability, Gabriel felt a surge of mysterious power welling up inside him.
He nodded, looking at Lorant in surprise.
"Yeah, I can definitely feel the energy from the Light-Winged Butterfly. My strength feels way more powerful now!" Gabriel said excitedly, clenching his fist as if to feel the unprecedented surge of strength.
While Gabriel could feel the power, the other students, who were only watching, couldn't grasp what was happening.
Seeing this, Lorant smiled but offered no explanation. He glanced to the side, where Lancelot was quietly observing the confident boy during the lesson.
Noticing Lorant's gaze, Lancelot snapped to attention and gestured toward the machine beside him.
"Come over here and try," Lancelot said. The machine was, of course, a device for testing physical values.
Gabriel stepped forward and punched the center of the machine.
As the machine trembled, an astonishing value appeared on the light screen.
A stir immediately arose among the students, all looking at Gabriel with intense curiosity.
They hadn’t realized their usually unassuming classmate had such hidden strength.
These testing devices were standard equipment at the Knight Academy. Every student underwent a simple check to record their values when entering a new grade or class.
So, they all had a good sense of what physical stats they and their classmates should have at this level.
Yet, the strength Gabriel displayed was definitely not something a knight at their level should possess.
The crowd began to buzz with excitement. Once they ruled out the possibility of Gabriel pretending to be weak, it became clear what had caused this difference.
Gabriel looked at his hands in astonishment, almost unable to believe that he had thrown the punch.
Lorant smiled and stepped forward. The Light-Winged Butterfly, which had been perched on Gabriel's shoulder, fluttered its wings and landed gracefully on his hand.
It was incredibly obedient.
"This is the ability of this Light-Winged Butterfly—strength amplification," Lorant said with a smile, looking at the group of students whose eyes were all fixed on his hand with burning interest. "The ability of this Light-Winged Butterfly can increase your base strength by about three times. However, the higher your starting strength, the smaller the increase. Of course, you don't need to worry about that. The amplification is just right to reach the critical point of a threefold increase for you."
Lorant looked at the increasingly shocked and incredulous faces in front of him and added,
"Of course, the abilities of Light-Winged Butterflies are not limited to just this one." To further astonish the students, he continued, "Currently, there are eight thousand nine hundred and seventy-two Light-Winged Butterflies with different abilities in the beast pet shop. Each of these Light-Winged Butterflies has different abilities, and your first task in this course is to memorize all of them."
"After memorizing these abilities, you’ll need to familiarize yourselves with each individual Light-Winged Butterfly. Keep in mind that some abilities overlap, so the total number of Light-Winged Butterflies is actually in the tens of thousands."
"However, this is not the difficult part. Each light-winged butterfly's wings are not exactly the same, and I believe you will all be able to remember these adorable creatures well."
The students' reactions shifted from awe—'How amazing!'—to disbelief—'How insane!'.
Almost 9,000 unique abilities? They were supposed to memorize every detail of thousands of light-winged butterflies, whose wings differed only in the finest ways?
Several knights gaped in disbelief, their mouths hanging open as they stared at Lorant.
They wondered if they were hearing things or if the sun had addled Lorant's mind, making him misstate the assignment.
Surely they didn’t have to memorize every single detail, right? A general understanding should be enough, right? Memorizing everything would literally kill them!
The students’ faces reflected sheer despair, as if they could already see a vast river stretching before them.
Perhaps this was the fabled River Styx, and if they boarded the boat with the old man beckoning, they could escape this living hell.
Lorant watched the students’ stunned faces and couldn’t help but smile, remembering how he felt when his teacher pointed to a seven- or eight-page text and declared that the entire thing needed to be memorized.
Having weathered the storm himself, he now wanted to take away everyone else’s umbrellas!
Besides, he wasn’t just doing this to torment them, was he?
After all, it was for their own good, wasn’t it?
Better to face some hardship now than to leave the academy unprepared, only to shed blood and tears later.
This wasn’t a peaceful land with bright classrooms where students could pass the time idly between exams.
This was on the edge of the Black Forest, not far from the beast pet shop, where in every unknown corner of the Black Forest, practitioners were losing their lives every moment.
