Chapter 12 The Scheming Disciple and the Charming Master 12
byChapter 12: The Cunning Disciple and His Teasing Master 12
Being seasoned veterans, Qin Du and Mu Yunting naturally remained calm—after all, as long as they weren't dead, it was a minor matter.
"So what do we do now? Running's definitely not an option, and you don't want to go back and face Master this soon, do you?"
"No shit! Find somewhere to hide, quick!"
The surrounding vegetation was dense, with excellent hiding spots everywhere.
Qin Du leaped straight up into a tree and used a dust-clearing spell to mask his scent.
Mu Yunting was a step slower. Before he could climb a tree, he heard a mess of hurried footsteps.
He couldn't make it up in time, so he dove into a thick bush instead.
He'd barely hidden himself when all hell broke loose outside.
"Run! The... the wolf pack is about to catch up!"
"I can't go on, Senior Sister, I can't run anymore. I really can't."
"Move it! Go, go!"
From his high perch, Qin Du had a clear view. And lo and behold, he spotted a familiar face.
Among the five female cultivators fleeing in panic from the wolf demons, the one in front, dragging her companion along—wasn't that Yu'er, the personal disciple of Yin Shuangyue?
She'd shown them around back at Xianyue Sect. He'd noticed back then how Mu Yunting kept staring at Yu'er weirdly. Who'd have thought they'd run into each other here of all places?
Talk about a small world!
Wasn't this the perfect setup for Mu Yunting to play the hero?
But even Mu Yunting, in his current state, couldn't guarantee he'd walk away from this in one piece.
The thought of Mu Yunting blowing his trial on a rash move made a smug grin creep onto Qin Du's face.
He'd prove to Lin Huaiqing that he was a hundred times the man Mu Yunting was!
"Senior Sister! Save—ah!!"
A blood-curdling scream echoed from the pitch-black depths of the forest.
A flash of red light—the female cultivator, her calf clamped in a wolf demon's jaws and other wolves tearing at her, was ruled dead and instantly teleported out of the secret realm.
The secret realm's judgment was way more trigger-happy than actual death.
Basically, if a wolf demon got a hold of you and you couldn't break free fast, you were as good as dead.
With their team down to four, Yu'er, as the leader, made the call: no more running.
"What do we do?! Senior Sister, we're surrounded! Xue'er's already been sent back."
"We can't outrun these wolves. Sisters, form up with me and fight!"
Xianyue Sect had always been famous among the immortals for their formations.
Even with just four of them, they snapped into formation in a flash, setting up a barrier with themselves at the core.
At least a dozen wolf demons surrounded the formation. The biggest, most eye-catching one was the Wolf Demon King.
This Wolf Demon King was several times the size of a normal wolf, with a striking tuft of red fur on its forehead—a fourth-tier fire-attribute beast.
Killing a demon king-level monster was worth at least a hundred points. Whoever landed the kill on the Wolf Demon King would basically guarantee themselves a top-five spot.
Add that to his current points, and second place was locked, with a real shot at first.
Qin Du, up in the tree, felt a flicker of temptation—but the sight of dozens of wolf demons around the king quickly cooled his jets.
Even working together, taking on this pack was a hell of a gamble.
And with that many people, who'd get the final blow? If he didn't, he'd just be doing all the work for someone else's glory.
In their demon clan, selfless heroics weren't exactly a virtue.
As the wolf demons hammered the formation, cracks started spiderwebbing across the barrier. No matter how hard the female cultivators pushed, the cracks just kept spreading.
The Wolf Demon King picked its moment, hurling a massive fireball at the cracked spot. The barrier couldn't take the heat and shattered with a deafening crack.
With the barrier down, the female cultivators scattered in panic, but the wolves tore into them—almost all of them ended up as wolf chow.
The only one still putting up a fight was Yu'er, who'd reached the mid-Foundation Establishment stage.
Problem was, she didn't have her life-bound spirit artifact yet. All she had was a little defensive dagger, which barely scratched the demon wolves.
The pack soon figured out Yu'er couldn't fight back, and one by one, they stopped bothering to attack.
They were just toying with her, circling around like she was already dinner.
Some of these demon wolves had clearly gained sentience, and they slunk up with a lecherous gleam in their eyes, tearing at Yu'er's robes.
Xianyue Sect disciple robes were made of flimsy gauze and light fabric—no match for wolf fangs. They were shredded into strips in no time.
Yu'er shrieked, clutching desperately at her robes, but she couldn't stop them from being torn to rags.
Even Qin Du, hiding up in the tree, couldn't stomach it anymore. How the hell had these wolves evolved to be this perverted?
Just as he drew the cast-iron sword from his back, ready to jump in, Mu Yunting burst out of the bushes a step ahead of him.
Qin Du followed right after, dropping from the tree like a hawk and driving his sword clean through a wolf demon's spine.
Hot wolf blood splashed all over Qin Du's face and body.
When he looked up, Mu Yunting was already deep in the thick of it, his plain cast-iron sword having lopped off three wolf demons' heads.
Mu Yunting yanked Yu'er behind him, shielding her with his body.
The wolves that had been messing with Yu'er moments ago were now dead meat at Mu Yunting's feet.
Honestly, Qin Du had never seen Mu Yunting this serious before.
He had to admit—Mu Yunting's cultivation was definitely above his right now. Or maybe it was this woman who'd lit a fire under him.
Yu'er was shaking like a leaf, one hand gripping Mu Yunting's arm for dear life, the other clutching at her half-shredded robes.
A few sword moves later, the wolf pack had learned their lesson and didn't dare rush in blindly anymore.
Instead, they circled the three of them, keeping a wary distance.
The Wolf Demon King hasn't made a rash move yet, probably because he's wary of the cast-iron swords they're holding.
Those blades are already stained with the blood of his kin.
But that doesn't mean they've got the upper hand—the wolves' deadliest move is still attacking as a pack. They're on the back foot.
Qin Du scratched his forehead and frowned, "You're way too reckless! What now? We're surrounded."
"I didn't ask you to come out—you chose to play the hero yourself. Worst case, we fight our way out—or we both get teleported out."
"No way! I'm not getting booted with you—that's too embarrassing!" Qin Du's reply was quite prideful.
Even Yu'er, who was still freaked out, was totally confused.
Aren't these two supposed to be fellow disciples? How can they be squabbling at a time like this?
To stop them from bickering, Yu'er spoke up in a timid voice:
"In our demon beast class, we learned wolf demons are scared of fire. Why don't we use fireball spells to set the trees around us on fire and scare the pack off?"
At that, both of them turned to stare at her, sizing her up in disbelief.
What they didn't know was that their encirclement by the wolf demons was being broadcast live on the big screen outside.
Apart from Qin Du and Mu Yunting, everyone outside heard her words clearly.
Lin Huaiqing's hand trembled, spilling tea across the table.
This girl's got a weird way of thinking!
Never mind that setting a forest fire would get you locked up for life—this secret realm is, like, the Xianyue Sect's precious intangible cultural heritage!
If they torch it and the fire gets out of hand, burning the whole realm down, what then?
