Chapter 66: If You Want to Know All the Truth
by 三风吟Chapter 66: If You Want to Know the Whole Truth
A tearing sound ripped through the air.
Mu Ye didn't even have time to raise his hand before the mask was ripped off his face, exposing him—a flicker of surprise flashing across his eyes.
Shu Hanqing stared at him, utterly dumbfounded.
"What kind of trickery is this?!"
Lei Zheng let out a furious roar, unleashing the full, terrifying pressure of a Thunder-class superpowered individual without holding back. Violent purple lightning erupted from his palm like a dam bursting, spreading wildly across the cracked earth.
The raging bolts of lightning wove into a deadly web that blotted out the sky, forming an unbreakable iron cage that trapped the group in the center, poised to crash down at any second.
Electricity crackled wildly, and the air instantly reeked of scorched ozone, as if the next second it would blast this whole place to smithereens.
Meanwhile, Rong Hua subdued Shi Lei, then stepped over the flying rubble and pulled Shu Hanqing into his arms.
Shu Hanqing turned his head to look at him, strands of hair falling over his face, making his already pale complexion look even more paper-white.
Rong Hua lowered his head, his eyes filled with barely concealed panic and worry: "You okay?"
Shu Hanqing shook his head.
Rong Hua suddenly raised his head, glaring at the man not far away, and couldn't help but curse: "Mu Ye! Are you insane? What the hell are you playing at here? You're hanging out with these people now?"
Mu Ye stood in the flickering lightning, silent as a stone.
Shu Hanqing's mind was a complete mess—he couldn't make heads or tails of what was happening.
There were six people on the other side.
Aside from Mu Ye, who had already revealed his face, there were Sang Mai, Shi Lei, and Yin Bianyan. And behind Mu Ye still stood a man and a woman, hidden in the shadows, their identities unknown.
And surrounding them all was the massive, terrifying purple thunder domain Lei Zheng had unleashed.
The leaping arcs of electricity were blinding and eerie, radiating a murderous aura that could annihilate anything. Anyone who dared take a single step out would be instantly reduced to ashes.
Shi Lei gritted his teeth, veins bulging all over his body, letting out a beastly growl as he forcibly snapped the mutated vines binding him, inch by agonizing inch.
The two sides faced off across the crackling lightning, locked in a standoff that could end in death at any second.
Lei Zheng's eyes were dark and venomous. He turned his head and shot Rong Hua a meaningful glance, signaling him to get Shu Hanqing the hell out of here.
Lei Zheng had zero intention of letting these people walk out of here alive. He wanted to kill Mu Ye right now, along with these unknown troublemakers, and wipe out the threat once and for all.
He would never repeat the mistakes of his past life, and he sure as hell wouldn't let those nightmares replay in this one. Since these people were pulling strings in the shadows, he might as well send them all straight to hell.
Rong Hua got the signal from Lei Zheng and grabbed Shu Hanqing's ice-cold hand, whispering, "We need to go. Now."
But Shu Hanqing didn't move an inch.
His gaze slid past Mu Ye's shoulder and locked onto the two figures still lurking in the shadows.
His eyes landed on the petite figure, clearly a woman, and Shu Hanqing's eyelids twitched violently as he hesitantly called out, "...Yi Ran?"
As the words left his mouth, the masked figure cowering in the back paused, then slowly raised their hands, fumbled around their cheeks, and finally yanked off the mask.
The fabric fell away, revealing a fair, delicate face.
It really was that face—so familiar it was almost painful.
It really was Yi Ran.
Actually, back when that mysterious psychic ability user showed up last time, Shu Hanqing had already run through the possibilities in his head over and over, and he was almost certain the hidden psychic had to be someone he knew.
Someone who knew him well and had terrifyingly high-level psychic power—across the whole base, the number of people who could meet those strict criteria was already few and far between.
And the psychic pressure today, crashing down like a mountain, was way beyond anything Yi Ran—who had just revealed herself—could produce.
Once you ruled out all the impossibilities, the answer staring him in the face was the only truth.
Shu Hanqing forced out three words: "...Yan Shenyun? It's you, isn't it?"
Lei Zheng: "Him? Yan Shenyun?"
A few seconds later, the black-clad figure who had been standing alone in the shadows finally raised slender fingers to the edge of his mask and slowly, unhurriedly, took it off.
As the fabric fell away, Yan Shenyun's cold, handsome face was revealed.
He wasn't wearing his glasses today—the sharpness and coldness usually hidden behind the lenses were now on full display. His deep, unreadable eyes were slightly lowered, making him look even more detached, radiating a godlike aloofness.
Shu Hanqing's gaze swept across the faces of Mu Ye, Shi Lei, Yin Bianyan, Sang Mai, and then Yi Ran and Yan Shenyun, one after another.
These faces—people he'd once fought alongside, people he'd once clashed with—were now bizarrely standing in a row, on the opposite side of the fight.
An absurd feeling washed over him like a tidal wave. Everything in front of him was ironic as hell.
Even Rong Hua beside him was completely stunned, his young face twisted with the fury of being played: "...What the fuck is going on here?"
The purple lightning around Lei Zheng surged violently as he stared dead at Yan Shenyun, his murderous intent nearly solidifying: "So all of this... it was you pulling the strings the whole time. You hid it damn well."
Seeing the battle was about to erupt, Yi Ran spoke up: "We don't mean any harm! Officer Lei, everything the Professor did was for—"
"Yi Ran."
Yan Shenyun spoke, cutting off Yi Ran's words. He said calmly: "It has nothing to do with them. If you want to know the whole truth, I can tell you everything from beginning to end."
Lei Zheng let out a cold laugh, his eyes filled with disdain and cruelty: "You think, at this point, you prisoners still have the right to negotiate with me?"
Before his words even faded, the air suddenly froze solid.
Yan Shenyun didn't even blink. A violent, unmatched wave of Superpower surged forth like a vast ocean, released in full force without any warning.
The overwhelming psychic force materialized like a hammer, precisely striking the elite soldiers Lei Zheng had brought.
Those soldiers—normally well-trained but with lower ability levels—didn't even have time to let out a scream before their expressions twisted in pain, their bodies doubling over as their knees slammed heavily onto the cold, hard rubble-strewn ground. Bright red blood dripped from their noses like broken beads.
Moans and cries filled the air all around.
At the very center of this world-destroying psychic storm, there was one spot of perfect calm.
All the psychic pressure, upon reaching half a chi from Shu Hanqing's body, eerily softened and transformed into a harmless breeze, gently flowing around him.
It was as if wind passed by Shu Hanqing's ears, and he suddenly recalled the nightmare he had dreamed repeatedly since his rebirth.
In the dream, countless desperate wails echoed from far to near. The church—standing amidst the ruins, symbolizing humanity's faith—cracked and collapsed in a thunderous roar. Violent flames turned into roaring demons tearing through the night sky, carrying smoke and crumbling walls as they surged toward the overcast heavens.
It was a scene straight out of purgatory.
The city fell.
Innocent children hiding in the church, in the last moments of their lives, had only the relentless, merciless blaze reflected in their pupils.
The ground was littered with countless stretchers covered in tattered white cloth, before the deafening crash of steel fortifications being torn apart by tens of thousands of zombies.
The screech of metal and the wet tearing of flesh intertwined, as if someone were being brutally dragged across the gravel, as an endless tide of zombies brought violence that annihilated everything.
The air reeked of gunpowder, charred flesh, and rot—a suffocating stench.
Screams and cries crashed against his eardrums like raging waves, over and over.
At some point, Shu Hanqing seemed to hear a crisp cracking sound deep within his mind, his chest as if a boulder were crushing it, each breath a heart-wrenching agony.
He vaguely heard someone beside him exclaim in a nearly frantic voice: "The test subject's superpower leap succeeded! It worked! Professor... we did it! Humanity is saved!"
Shu Hanqing lowered his head, staring blankly as a cold light seeped out from under his skin, bit by bit.
It was a pure azure glow.
As the blue light eroded him, his palms turned translucent, ghostly, when a violent gale rose around him, howling and whipping his jet-black hair upward.
Countless fine, dazzling blue specks drifted from his feathered body like a great rain, scattering over the vast, broken land.
The scene shattered, and when it reformed, Yan Shenyun's face was before him—utterly devoid of emotion.
Shu Hanqing inexplicably felt tears welling up.
Yan Shenyun looked at him from a distance: "...You have endured countless hardships, chasing all the way here, simply wanting an answer, isn't that right?"
Shu Hanqing's lips moved slightly.
But before he could reply, the world before his eyes seemed to have its power switch abruptly turned off—all the light, noise, and pain plunged into boundless darkness in an instant.
Legend has it that the most powerful Psychic Ability User in all of humanity could directly penetrate the brain, forcing other High-Level Ability Users to become complete puppets.
And that person would become a mythic legend.
