Chapter 90: They'll Get Their Comeuppance Sooner or Later

    Lu Tang?

What could Lu Tang want with him now?

The comms device vibrated again, another message popping up.

"Look up at a 60-degree angle, nine o'clock direction."

Fang Ran turned in the direction she indicated.

A blonde Sentinel sat by the window of a café, waving at him.

The café was situated on higher ground than the square, its floor-to-ceiling glass windows offering a perfect panoramic view of the plaza.

The Sentinel Fang Liyu had arranged turned out to be Lu Tang.

Fang Ran quickly signaled to Zhong Wan and the others. The four of them then navigated through the crowded square to the second floor of the café.

The café wasn't large, but its retro decor and wooden furniture gave it a stylish, tasteful ambiance. The view was expansive—not only did it overlook the square, but also the distant mountains, making it quite popular.

Lu Tang had secured the café's prime viewing spot.

When Fang Ran and the others entered, she was sipping coffee, gazing out at the scenery.

"Sister Lu Tang, it's really you!" Zhong Wan, pulling Fang Ran along, walked over first, with the two larger Sentinels following closely behind them.

Lu Tang wasn't wearing her Center's Sentinel uniform today. Dressed in black leather, her golden hair tied back in a neat ponytail, she looked sharp and cool.

"You two rascals!" she complained with a laugh. "Bringing two big bodyguards just to deliver something! Are you trying to make sure everyone notices?"

"Heh heh," Zhong Wan and Fang Ran sat down beside her. "We're just throwing them off the scent."

The café tables were small, round two-seaters, barely accommodating three people. The two large Sentinels naturally couldn't fit and had to sit at the adjacent table.

Lu Wenchuan set down the food he was carrying, and the small round table quickly became a small mountain of provisions.

"Huh?" Lu Tang glanced over, her interest immediately piqued. "Isn't that Class D Calydonian boar meat? That's a serious pick-me-up!"

She scanned Fu Zhangzhou and Lu Wenchuan. "Wait... are you two top-tier Sentinels really that run-down? You need this kind of supplement?"

Lu Tang quickly turned back, speaking to Fang Ran and Zhong Wan with a serious expression. "How about you two come with me to District 2 instead? What kind of happiness can you find sticking with them...?"

The moment she finished speaking, two piercing gazes shot over from the next table.

Lu Tang shivered slightly, appearing a bit uncomfortable, but she elegantly took a sip of her coffee. "Just kidding, you two great Sentinels. Please rein in your psionic energy. I wouldn't dare try to poach your Guides."

Fang Ran couldn't help but chuckle. Lu Tang was as fiery as ever—it was hard to imagine such a passionate woman coming from the frigid District 8.

He took out a box and handed it to her.

"Sister Lu Tang, please keep this safe."

Lu Tang nodded. "Just to be clear, I have no idea what's inside. I'm just doing Fang Liyu a favor." With that, she casually stuffed it into her backpack.

Fang Ran nodded. "Sister Lu Tang, why are you in District 5 too?"

"It's all because that block of ice, Lu Wenshan, is so inhuman," Lu Tang frowned, a hint of indignation on her face. "He knows I'm about to transfer districts, yet he's squeezing every last bit of value out of me. Everything has to be official business!"

She glanced at Fang Ran as if by chance. "Serves him right for missing everything..."

Zhong Wan curiously pressed, "Missing what?"

"Nothing," Lu Tang waved her hand, seemingly unwilling to discuss the topic further. "I've been in District 5 for a few days now. I'm here on a mission."

"I heard District 4 deployed some Fire-attuned Sentinels over," Lu Wenchuan from the next table said. "What kind of mission is so special?"

"Well..." Lu Tang sighed, her tone hesitant. "I signed a confidentiality agreement, so I can't go into details. Let's just say the situation is a bit complicated..."

She glanced at Fu Zhangzhou. "If we can't resolve it in the end, you might still need to step in and clean up the mess."

"Oh?" Fu Zhangzhou raised an eyebrow and shrugged indifferently.

The Sentinel's attitude suggested he was already accustomed to such mission assignments.

Fang Ran was actually quite curious.

Why would such a rebellious person work for the Center?

For high-ranking Sentinels, some join major organizations for fame, some for profit, but most do it for stable Purification.

But this man had outright refused Purification from the start. If he hadn't met Fang Ran, he'd probably still be on the verge of going berserk every day.

In fact, one could say Fu Zhangzhou's personality was more like that of a Free Sentinel than even Wanqing and Heifeng.

Yet he stayed with the Center. Could it be related to his past experiences? Fang Ran pondered.

Fang Ran got lost in thought and forgot to look away, his gaze inadvertently meeting the Sentinel's again.

Fu Zhangzhou's eyes instantly lit up. "Fang Ran, I knew you couldn't take your eyes off me."

The next moment, he picked up his stool and moved to sit right next to his Guide.

    "..."

    Fang Ran side-eyed him.

The Sentinel didn't seem to notice, even shifting closer to close the gap.

Lu Wenchuan, still sitting at the next table, was caught off guard but quickly followed suit, moving to sit beside Zhong Wan.

The poor little two-person table was now crammed with five adults, two of whom were hulking Sentinels.

Lu Tang rolled her eyes and sighed helplessly.

"Talk about the stench of love."

Outside, the square seemed to be getting livelier, with the boisterous crowd noise filtering in through the cracks in the café’s floor-to-ceiling windows.

"What's going on today?" Zhong Wan said, looking out the window at the crowd. "It's so packed!"

Lu Tang took a sip of her coffee and also looked outside.

"According to the café server, it seems to be the opening ceremony for a new branch of the Guardians."

"Honestly, they're way too flashy. Our District 5 headquarters was just invaded last night, and the entire district is still on alert. The Guardians didn't even postpone their event—what are they thinking?"

"By the way," she added, lowering her voice slightly, "I heard they lost a Guide in our District 4 last night too. Is that true?"

"Yeah." Fang Ran nodded. "Recently... the one causing the biggest stir."

"Oh~" Lu Tang wore an expression of someone eager for gossip. "So the rumors spreading online are actually true."

"What's going on with the District 5 headquarters anyway? How did they let those people break in? It made me so embarrassed—some Sentinels from the Guardians teased me today."

"Sentinels from the Guardians?" Fang Ran caught the key point in her words. "Sister Lu Tang, how did you end up interacting with people from the Guardians?"

"On a mission," Lu Tang said sheepishly. "I was already exhausted, and then I had to deal with their mockery."

"For that mission, besides the Sentinels from our Sentinel and Guide Center, they also called in people from the Guardians. This morning, those guys were laughing at our Center's defenses, saying they're like sieves."

    "Boom! Boom! Boom!"

Outside, celebratory fireworks exploded in the square.

Different colored powders burst in the sky, and multicolored streamers drifted down with the wind. Cheers from the crowd rose wave after wave, and the atmosphere outside grew increasingly lively.

Fang Ran and the others all turned to look out the window.

Lu Tang muttered under her breath:

"The Guardians are putting on such a flashy show—sooner or later, they're going to get their comeuppance."
