Chapter 91 The Strongest Sentry in the World
byChapter 91 The World's Strongest Sentinel
The atmosphere in the square grew increasingly lively.
Through the café's floor-to-ceiling glass window, Fang Ran saw a red-carpeted podium set up beneath the statue, where someone was giving a speech.
The distance was a bit far, and Fang Ran couldn't make out the words, only seeing the person wave to the crowd below.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
Fireworks salutes lit up the sky above the square once again.
Amid the sound of the fireworks, Zheng Mingyu emerged from the crowd, followed by his Guardian Team A.
The upright Sentinel slowly made his way toward the podium, surrounded by bursts of enthusiastic applause and cheers from the crowd. The atmosphere in the square had reached its peak.
Just as Fang Ran was intently watching the scene outside, the Sentinel beside him suddenly jerked.
Fu Zhangzhou was already extremely close to him, their arms pressed together. Fang Ran could feel the Sentinel's muscles contract, and in that instant, the Sentinel's presence intensified sharply.
Fang Ran's heart began to pound rapidly, a sense of danger suddenly washing over him, his entire heart tightening.
What's going on?
He turned his head and saw Fu Zhangzhou and Lu Wenchuan suddenly raise their arms.
The next moment.
Two Psychic Shields unfolded simultaneously, one on the left and one on the right, tightly protecting the group.
"Boom!"
A terrifyingly loud impact sound rang out across the square.
Before Fang Ran could even process what had happened outside, he felt a shockwave of energy surge toward them.
"Crash!"
The glass window in front of them shattered entirely, shards of glass scattering in all directions, bouncing off the Sentinels' Psychic Shields and ricocheting away.
"Ah!"
"Run!"
The other customers and waitstaff in the café panicked, scrambling to flee. Fortunately, the Sentinels' Psychic Shields had blocked most of the impact in time. The café was left with shattered glass and a mess, but no one was injured.
Lu Tang stood up at this point and shouted loudly:
"Everyone, stay calm! Huddle in a corner to take cover, and try not to leave the café."
"What's going on?" Zhong Wan beside her exclaimed, his eyes wide with fear, lips pale, tightly gripping Lu Wenchuan's arm.
Fang Ran slowly recovered from his shock. The impact had jolted his entire body, and a buzzing in his ears reverberated in his mind.
However, since the impact didn't continue, he guessed that the attack likely wasn't targeting them. His tightly wound nerves relaxed slightly.
"Fang Ran, are you okay?" Fu Zhangzhou lowered his head, placing a hand on his shoulder, his eyes filled with concern.
"I'm fine." Fang Ran shook his head and glanced outside again, instantly furrowing his brows. "Fu Zhangzhou, should you go out and help..."
Outside was complete chaos. The once joyous square had transformed entirely.
A large crater had been blasted into the ground, and the hovercar the Guardians had parked in the square had been blown into several pieces, now lying in the crater and engulfed in fierce flames. The crowd in the square scattered in all directions amid the flames and black smoke, the scene utterly chaotic.
The Sentinels of the Guardians were all on high alert, raising Psychic Shields to block the front while scanning their surroundings.
An alarm sounded from the nearby Sentinel and Guide Center, indicating that help would likely arrive soon.
Strange.
Fang Ran glanced around the square but couldn't see any sign of the attacker anywhere.
Then where did that energy just come from?
Could the attacker be hiding among the crowd?
Lu Tang took a small half-step closer to the window, her expression grave. "This is so eerie... I can't see anyone. What exactly is it?"
She suddenly froze, as if sensing something, and turned to look at Fu Zhangzhou.
"Sentinel Fu, don't you think... this feels like an attack from a Fire Sentinel?"
"Hmm." Fu Zhangzhou was also staring at the crater blasted into the square.
Black smoke continued to rise from it, faintly mingled with flames, and a strong acrid scent of burning gradually spread across the square.
This was indeed the typical attack style of a Fire Sentinel.
"What should we do now?" Zhong Wan had calmed down a bit. Lu Wenchuan had held him close for a while to comfort him, and his face was no longer as pale.
He looked at the Sentinel beside him and asked, "A Chuan, are you going down to help?"
Lu Wenchuan frowned at this, glancing at Fu Zhangzhou as if waiting for his decision.
Fu Zhangzhou, however, remained silent. He was still staring intently at the crater, seemingly deep in thought.
"If you're going to help, I can stay here and watch over Fang Ran and Zhong Wan," Lu Tang sighed. "I won't get involved. I'm too old to play the hero."
"Wait." Fu Zhangzhou's gaze suddenly flickered, as if he had noticed something off. His eyes shifted from the crater to the statue at the center of the square.
The base of the statue had, at some point, developed several cracks.
"Crack."
A faint sound of metal breaking reached his ears.
He glanced at Fang Ran, then turned to Lu Tang. "Keep an eye on him for me."
With that, the Sentinel leaped into the air, swiftly flying toward the ten-meter-tall statue.
"Fu Zhangzhou!" Fang Ran instinctively called out to him but was pulled back by Lu Tang.
"It's fine, Fang Ran," Lu Tang said, pulling him back to sit at the round table. "Fu Zhangzhou is more than capable of handling this. That fire-type energy just now was powerful, but it's nothing compared to him."
No sooner had her words fallen than a strange sound of metal twisting came from outside.
"Creak, creak, creak~"
It sounded like a monster gnawing on steel beams, or the muffled crunch of animal bones being twisted.
Fang Ran felt a chill run down his spine and quickly craned his neck to see.
The statue at the center of the square was slowly tilting, threatening to collapse in the direction of the Guardians.
Fu Changzhou accelerated at that moment, swooping toward the statue like a black hawk in a storm.
"Thud!"
He braced the statue with both hands, and the point of impact dented inward dramatically, but it just managed to halt the statue's impending fall.
The statue, over ten meters tall and made entirely of metal, was estimated to weigh tens of tons. Even as a top-tier Sentinel with extraordinary strength and stamina, Fu Changzhou couldn’t support it indefinitely.
"Lu Tang, keep an eye on them."
Lu Wenchuan could no longer stay put. He threw out the words and rushed over.
The S-Class Ice Sentinel swooped down to the base of the statue, his hands glowing with white light. A wave of frost erupted from his palms, quickly forming a wall of frost between the statue and the ground.
With the two Sentinels working from above and below, the statue was finally stabilized.
Fang Ran watched, his heart pounding so hard he almost stopped breathing. His left hand subconsciously gripped something and kept tightening.
"Ah!" Lu Tang suddenly exclaimed.
Fang Ran quickly turned and realized he and Zhong Wan had each gripped one of Lu Tang’s arms from either side. He immediately pulled his hand back.
"Sorry, Sister Lu Tang."
Lu Tang shook her head with a hint of exasperation. "Why so nervous? I told you they could handle it."
"You’re traveling with the strongest Sentinels in the world."
