Chapter 50
byChapter 50
Chen Zui transferred the rent to the landlord.
The landlord replied with a message: "Did you really go into *that* line of work?"
Chen Zui closed his optical computer. A figure in his peripheral vision was heading straight for him. He instinctively sidestepped—a habit from his mercenary days. Anything coming directly at him, he'd immediately evade.
With that move, he narrowly avoided the cold glint of a knife. The blade reflected the light, momentarily blinding him.
The knife, having missed, paused for a second before slashing sideways at him again. Chen Zui swiftly and firmly seized the hand holding the knife and looked at the attacker. His face was uncovered—a face he had no memory of, wearing glasses and a suit, appearing to be in his forties, like a corporate drone drained of vitality by years at a desk.
Chen Zui had initially thought this might be someone sent by Lu Mingye, but would he send someone like *this*?
Judging by the weak resistance, the attacker had little strength. As soon as his hand was caught, he wildly swung his other hand toward Chen Zui, with no technique whatsoever.
Chen Zui grabbed him and executed a clean over-the-shoulder throw. The man crashed heavily onto the ground, losing his grip on the knife.
He was clearly just an ordinary person, not a trained fighter.
Chen Zui grew even more puzzled.
The man seemed oblivious to pain, slowly getting up and even baring his teeth as if to bite him. Chen Zui dodged and noticed the man’s eyes were completely blank. He seized the man by the throat, lifted him up, and examined him closely.
Chen Zui: "He seems to be under some kind of control?"
Ao Tian: "Could it be the Transmigration Bureau again!"
Chen Zui: "Transmigration Bureau?"
The man he was holding suddenly twitched several times. His empty eyes gradually regained focus, shifting from confusion to shock upon seeing Chen Zui. Realizing the situation, he began to panic, frantically slapping at Chen Zui’s hand and barely managing to speak: "Wh-who are you? What are you doing?"
He appeared completely unaware of what had just happened.
Ao Tian: "The Transmigration Bureau is our adversary. They’ve been causing trouble in various small worlds lately."
Chen Zui released the man, who didn’t even stay for an explanation. He turned and fled in a panic.
Ao Tian was furious. It hadn’t expected the Transmigration Bureau to have discovered this small world too. In the previous world, the Bureau had only appeared later and merely bound the original protagonist in an attempt to steer the plot back on track. But this time, they had taken control of an ordinary person to try to kill Chen Zui—their methods were growing increasingly ruthless.
It felt uneasy, especially since their mission in this world had just begun. He hadn't even slept with the target yet, and the affection meter was only at 4%.
Chen Zui: "It’s fine. We're united in purpose, and any problem can be solved. I believe you’re definitely stronger than that so-called Transmigration Bureau."
Ao Tian was comforted by these words and immediately cheered up: "Yeah! And you’re a great host too! But we need to be extra cautious from now on."
Chen Zui didn’t return to the rented apartment. Although he was no stranger to hardship, there was no need to endure it unnecessarily when conditions allowed. Instead, he checked into a hotel.
Little did he know, this decision saved him from a trap.
At that moment, the rented apartment was pitch black. Three figures were hiding in different corners, waiting all night for someone who never returned.
As dawn broke, the three exchanged glances, dark circles under their eyes, feeling as if the word "idiots" was written across their foreheads.
Just then, the team leader received a message from the boss: "Is he taken care of?"
The leader had no idea how to respond. Awkward.
He could only force himself to reply: "Sorry, he didn’t come back last night."
Lu Mingye frowned at the message. He didn’t come back all night...
"Keep waiting."
The leader breathed a sigh of relief, glad the boss didn’t say anything further.
"Understood."
Lu Mingye closed his optical computer and picked up his coffee cup. Where could he have gone all night? Just then, a delicate-looking omega walked into the café, spotted Lu Mingye, and approached.
Nodding, he said: "President Lu."
Lu Mingye smiled, pushing thoughts of Chen Zui aside: "Take a seat."
Gao Yu sat down, looking somewhat nervous and constantly glancing around: "Senior President Shen has handed the collaboration with V-God Tech to Junior President Shen. The company places great importance on this partnership. If Junior President Shen succeeds, the board will have no objections to him taking over Senior President Shen’s position."
Lu Mingye set down his coffee cup: "In that case, we must ensure he fails in this collaboration."
A sinister smile curled his lips.
Gao Yu nodded in agreement.
Lu Mingye: "As Shen Yanzhi’s right-hand man, I’ll have to trouble you with this matter."
Gao Yu looked troubled: "It's a tall order. Junior President Shen is keeping a close watch, and Senior President Shen is doing everything to pave the way for him."
Lu Mingye pushed an exquisite velvet box on the table toward Gao Yu: "I believe in your abilities. Such talent deserves appropriate rewards. Five million will be transferred to your usual account."
Gao Yu pretended to be above discussing money, politely refusing a few times before pledging his loyalty: "Don’t worry, I’ll definitely handle this for you."
Lu Mingye raised his coffee cup in a toast: "To success."
Gao Yu picked up the gift box: "Anything you undertake is bound to succeed."
As the words "Welcome again" echoed, only Lu Mingye remained by the window. He leisurely sipped his coffee, curious whether Shen Yanzhi would still be smiling if this deal fell through.
He could almost picture Shen Yanzhi’s expression of collapse, his smile widening.
Gao Yu returned to his aircraft and opened the gift box, his eyes lighting up. It was a new product from a high-end luxury brand. Lu Mingye was always generous. He took out the necklace.
"So beautiful."
A sudden, unfamiliar voice made Gao Yu jump. The necklace fell but was caught by a hand reaching from behind.
Gao Yu didn’t dare move, because that hand was also holding a knife. He could only lift his gaze to the rearview mirror, where he saw a handsome face with pitch-black eyes.
He didn’t recognize the man.
"It’d be a shame if it broke," Chen Zui said, gently placing the necklace around Gao Yu’s neck. Gao Yu’s Adam’s apple bobbed in fear, as the knife in Chen Zui’s hand repeatedly came dangerously close to his neck.
Goosebumps rose on his neck.
Once the necklace was fastened, Chen Zui looked into the rearview mirror, meeting Gao Yu’s gaze. As if oblivious to the fear in the other’s eyes, he calmly flipped the pendant right side up: "It suits you."
Gao Yu mustered his courage: "Who are you?"
Chen Zui didn’t answer the question: "My terms are simple. If you want to live, tell me what you and Lu Mingye just discussed."
The knife tip pressed against Gao Yu’s delicate skin, drawing a bead of blood. Gao Yu winced in pain, furrowing his brow, his body trembling uncontrollably.
Chen Zui: "This necklace won't look good stained with blood."
Gao Yu still wanted to struggle, but as soon as he uttered two words, the knife pressed against his neck was swiftly drawn sideways. A sharp cry of pain echoed through the aircraft.
Chen Zui: "Talk."
Gao Yu trembled again, shrinking back and not even daring to open his eyes. He spilled everything he had just discussed with Lu Mingye.
Blood stained his collar.
Gao Yu's face was deathly pale, on the verge of fainting from fear. "Th-that's all... Please, let me go."
He received no response. He didn't even notice when the knife was removed from his neck. He kept muttering, "Let me go, don't kill me," until, after about ten minutes, he couldn't take it anymore and passed out, never daring to open his eyes to see.
Lu Mingye was about to leave when someone sat down across from him.
The moment he saw who it was, Lu Mingye felt his gland ache and instinctively clenched his fist. He stared darkly at Chen Zui, who appeared completely at ease. How dare he show up so brazenly in front of him? He must really look down on him.
Chen Zui grinned. "Hey~ Cream Puff~"
Lu Mingye nearly gritted his teeth to dust. But losing his temper would mean losing, and Lu Mingye never loses. In this situation, as long as he ignored him, the other would just be making a fool of himself.
So he simply stared coldly at Chen Zui.
Chen Zui tapped his light screen and played the video of Gao Yu's confession. He watched Lu Mingye with great interest. The alpha remained composed, his expression barely changing as he watched the video almost impassively before turning his gaze to Chen Zui.
He didn't seem afraid at all.
Chen Zui: "I think this alone isn't interesting enough. How about we just bankrupt the Shen family?"
Lu Mingye's lips tightened slightly.
Chen Zui closed the video and opened a folder. "This is all the information I've gathered on the Shen Corporation. Among it, the supplier for the materials used in Shen's plastic products was changed to this company two years ago."
His slender fingers tapped on the light screen. "This company was registered just two years ago and immediately landed such a big order. The owner is a beta named Qin Xinyi. He has a beautiful omega sister, and this sister..."
He tapped again, and several photos popped up—images of a beautiful omega in intimate poses with Old Mr. Shen.
"The most important point is that these plastics are substandard Category C products, which don't meet market requirements."
Chen Zui closed the light screen and looked at Lu Mingye. "Destroy Old Mr. Shen's backing, and with your plan involving Gao Yu, ruin Shen Yanzhi's new project. Then both Shen father and son will be removed by the board."
"How about it?"
He smiled, though the warmth didn't reach his eyes.
Their gazes met silently.
Ao Tian: "Favorability 5%."
Ao Tian: "I have a feeling this favorability increase is because of this wicked idea."
Lu Mingye cursed inwardly, "Madman." The word appeared above his head, visible to Chen Zui.
"I'm not interested in whatever you're planning."
Lu Mingye said coldly, knowing he was no match for the other, and stood up to leave.
Chen Zui didn't chase after him or try to stop him. A 1% increase in favorability wasn't a complete loss.
Since he wanted to pursue excitement, he'd help him see it through to the end.
—
The news that Wolf would be returning to the stage was announced three days in advance. Chen Zui had asked the Boss to arrange it deliberately, claiming he wanted to test his appeal before deciding whether to sign a long-term contract. Of course, this was just an excuse to lure Lu Mingye.
Chen Zui had been staying in a hotel all along, and Lu Mingye had withdrawn the people stationed at his home.
He looked over the latest report on Chen Zui submitted by his subordinate.
In this world, with money, he could find out anything. When he discovered that Chen Zui was Wolf, he was slightly surprised but not overly shocked.
Recalling the man's physique and skills in the ring, and seeing the message from the club about Wolf's upcoming appearance, he let out a soft laugh.
The day before Wolf's appearance, Lu Mingye met with the club's Boss. He got straight to the point: "Ten million. I'll arrange an opponent for him."
He slid a photo of the opponent across the table.
Boss Zhao glanced at the photo, raised an eyebrow, and feigned hesitation. "This opponent... Mr. Lu, he's a fighter I have high hopes for."
"I'll invest twenty million. Plus, this match will surely fill your pockets, Boss Zhao. Your club always has new talent; I'm sure another promising fighter will come along soon."
"One more thing—as a VIP of your club, I've been rather bored lately. Nothing fresh or exciting."
Lu Mingye shook his head lightly and casually added another ten million. He had money; he didn't care how much he spent. The day he ran out of money, he'd die. At least he'd have enjoyed life while he had it.
Boss Zhao adopted a sage-like demeanor. There was no reason to turn down easy money. "We always prioritize our clients' satisfaction. Since you put it that way, Mr. Lu, I'll naturally arrange it for you."
They shook hands, smiling, in a harmonious atmosphere.
—
Chen Zui changed into his outfit in the dressing room—the same one from his last match.
However, because of the Transmigration Bureau incident, he slipped something into his boot this time.
There was a knock on the door. "You're up."
Chen Zui put on his mask and walked out. He noticed the arena was different from last time—larger, semi-submerged, and fully enclosed overhead. He'd looked into it when he first arrived; the venue was frequently modified to keep the audience engaged.
The crowd cheered enthusiastically at his appearance.
After he entered, the door automatically closed behind him.
Chen Zui glanced toward the tightly shut door on the opposite side. His opponent would emerge from there.
The iron door slowly opened.
He saw his opponent, but it wasn't the one listed in the materials.
Instead, it was a fierce-eyed tiger—a beast with an imposing presence, formidable even among tigers. It bared its teeth and stepped out with a menacing air.
The audience gasped in surprise. Clearly, no one had expected a human-versus-beast match, though it wasn't unprecedented. In fact, it was one of the venue's specialties.
Still, most hadn't anticipated that this rising star would participate in such a fight. It seemed like a death wish.
The beast's appearance excited the crowd even more. Though some were worried for Chen Zui, their voices were completely drowned out.
In the VIP room, Lu Mingye wore a faint smile.
He took a photo of the arena and sent it to Gao Yu: "He's about to die. Proceed with confidence."
