Chapter 19: The Art of Keeping a Man in Line

Gu Sai finally managed to calm his legs down and could sit back to rest, but he still had to bargain with his right hand, asking it to hold off a little longer. He was afraid that if he went to touch Chen Wang's chest now, it would get chopped into mincemeat. He needed to find the right moment.

The right hand reluctantly agreed, and Gu Sai breathed a sigh of relief as he settled down to rest.

He noticed that Lan Miaomiao beside him was curled up in her lounge chair, sneakily looking at something.

He asked, "Sister Miaomiao, what are you doing?"

Lan Miaomiao, acting like a thief in the night, looked around to make sure no one was watching them before whispering to Gu Sai, "I'm reading a novel."

With that, she raised her hand to show Gu Sai the tiny booklet she was holding: "There's no phone here, so to kill time, I bring a few novels in with me. I read them when I'm bored."

"Wow," Gu Sai said, looking at the booklet with no cover. "Sister Miaomiao, what novel are you reading?"

Lan Miaomiao stammered, "It's... just some fan fiction."

"Fanfic of what?"

"Don't ask." Lan Miaomiao's voice got really quiet, clearly not wanting to elaborate.

Gu Sai didn't push it. "Oh."

Lan Miaomiao turned her back to Gu Sai and went back to her sneaky reading. When Gu Sai handed her a blanket, he accidentally caught a glimpse of the page and was totally stunned.

What the heck did he just see?!!!

"Briar's hand slid up from under the hem of his shirt, stroking his back, sending a shiver through Vick.

Briar sneered, 'What, scared? Weren't you so full of yourself? You were so cocky when you were chopping trees, but now you can't even stand?'

Vick bit his lower lip nervously, his voice trembling, 'Don't... don't do this...'

Briar ignored him, leaning in to kiss him..."

Gu Sai quickly looked away in shock, afraid that if he read one more word, his worldview would collapse.

Sister Miaomiao's taste... is so out there! He once again felt that his own novels were way too tame.

Guan Yujia came over from another lounge area and sat down beside Chen Wang. "Brother Wang."

Chen Wang had been resting with his eyes closed, thinking about how to get back at Gu Sai. He opened his eyes and gave a cold "Mm."

Guan Yujia rested his chin on the armrest of Chen Wang's chair, with a pitiful look. "Brother Wang, once the livestream starts, are you heading up to the second floor?"

Chen Wang had also collected five silver coins, but Guan Yujia only had three and wasn't eligible for the second floor.

Chen Wang said, "What do you think?"

No duh.

Guan Yujia glanced at Gu Sai and said in a wheedling tone, "Brother Wang, if you go up, I'll have no one down here to help me. Stay and help me collect five silver coins, and we can go up together, okay?"

Chen Wang looked at him like he'd lost his mind and asked, "Do I look like an idiot to you?"

Guan Yujia's heart sank at such a cold rejection, but he didn't give up because he still had an ace up his sleeve.

He let out a pitiful sigh and said, "I'm my dad's only son. He's always hoping I'll amount to something, but I seem to come up short in everything and always let him down. Before coming to this show, I promised him I'd win, and he was so happy. He's definitely been watching the livestream every day."

Chen Wang furrowed his brow but said nothing.

He had a lot of issues with Guan Yujia, even bordering on dislike, but Guan Yujia's father had always been good to him. When he was a child, he and another child were kidnapped and thrown into a pit, and it was Guan Yujia's father who found them and called the police.

During the struggle with the kidnapper, he was stabbed in the lung, leaving him with a chronic cough.

Because of that, Chen Wang and his parents had always been grateful to the Guan family for saving their lives, and the two families had remained very close over the years.

Guan Yujia knew exactly how to exploit this, which was why he had the confidence to act entitled in front of Chen Wang. He was certain Chen Wang wouldn't reject him. Even if Chen Wang spoke harshly to him, their bond was something no one else could compete with.

With that thought, Guan Yujia glanced at Gu Sai again. Gu Sai, who had been eavesdropping, quickly looked away, pretending to read Lan Miaomiao's novel.

"Brother Wang, just help me out," Guan Yujia said, grabbing Chen Wang's arm and shaking it. "If you don't, I'll be the first to get eliminated on the show, and my dad will be heartbroken. You know his health has never fully recovered since that incident. If he has a relapse..."

"Fine, fine, fine," Chen Wang said impatiently, yanking his arm away and sitting up, holding up one finger. "I'll help you this once. Once we're on the second floor, whether you make it further is entirely up to you."

Guan Yujia was overjoyed and immediately promised, "Mhm, I know! Brother Wang, you're so good to me!"

Chen Wang shot him a look and turned to look at Gu Sai.

Gu Sai showed no reaction at all, and Chen Wang ground his teeth in annoyance. The truth was, if he didn't want to help Guan Yujia, no one could force him. Even if Guan Yujia brought up his father, or even if his dad were standing right there, Chen Wang could refuse without hesitation.

But just now, he noticed Gu Sai had been eavesdropping the whole time, occasionally stealing glances back. When their eyes met, Gu Sai would act like nothing happened and turn away.

Ha, wasn't this just pretending not to care? Inside, he was probably seething with jealousy!

So, Chen Wang decided to agree to Guan Yujia to see how Gu Sai would react. If Gu Sai stopped him from staying on the first floor using teamwork as an excuse, it would prove he was indeed jealous.

Yet, when this guy heard him agree to Guan Yujia, he didn't react at all!

Fine then. It seemed Gu Sai had actually listened to his earlier advice to be more restrained. So why didn't he take the advice to keep being a tease?

In the afternoon, before the livestream, Chen Wang said to Gu Sai, "Later, when you go up to the second floor alone, aren't you going to be scared?"

You must want me to go with you, right? Just say it, say it! If you just say it, I'll definitely go with you!

Gu Sai said, "I won't be scared. Gu Yunlang has enough silver coins too, so he'll go up with me. Plus, there's the camera crew and staff—so many people, nothing to be scared of."

Chen Wang was like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, his hackles raised. "What the—?! Gu Yunlang is going up too?!"

Gu Sai nodded. "Mm-hm, but don't worry, Teacher Chen. We're on the same team. Once I'm up there, I'll work hard on the tasks and won't ally with Gu Yunlang."

Chen Wang was speechless, the way he looked at Gu Sai growing more and more complicated. Hmph, he really was treating me like a kite, pulling me in and letting me out at his whim. With such skill in handling a husband, Gu Sai must have a master behind him!
