Chapter 107: A Glance That Lasts Ten Thousand Years
by 风寄明月Chapter 107: A Single Glance That Lasts a Thousand Years
Chu Lanting had always believed that beyond his own world, there must be other life forms in outer space.
Each type of life form would build its own unique home world.
It wasn't until he came to this world—until Pei Du took him to other planets—that he realized how limited his imagination really was.
The last planet he and Pei Du visited wasn't far from the main star, but it enjoyed spring weather year-round, and every corner of the planet was as beautiful as a dreamlike garden.
Unfortunately, they'd only been there two days when Pei Du received a message from the main star.
Their month-long vacation was cut short on day twenty-three.
On the way back to the main star, Chu Lanting sat in the passenger seat, letting the man beside him toy with his fingers.
He'd noticed Pei Du seemed to really like his hands.
Even back then, he'd loved holding his hand and occasionally pressing kisses to his palm.
Now that his memories had returned, their relationship kept getting better every day.
Pei Du no longer held back—whenever they were together, his hand would always end up in Chu Lanting's.
Another wave of tingling numbness washed over his palm.
Even though he'd been kissed countless times by now, Chu Lanting still couldn't quite handle it.
He couldn't help curling his fingers and, with a soft laugh, said, "A Du, that tickles."
Pei Du didn't answer. Instead, he gently uncurled his fingers and pressed a light kiss to each one.
Sensing something off about the man beside him, Chu Lanting tore his gaze away from the celestial bodies flashing past outside.
When he looked back, Pei Du was pressing another kiss to his wrist.
His brows were lowered, his expression devout and focused—as if he weren't kissing his hand, but some kind of faith.
He wasn't his husband—he was a devotee.
He swallowed hard.
Chu Lanting couldn't help but laugh at his own thought.
He slipped his hand out of Pei Du's grip.
Raising both hands, he cupped Pei Du's cheeks and asked with a smile, "What's wrong? Something happen?"
He'd had a feeling ever since Pei Du got that call from the military.
He was waiting for Pei Du to bring it up himself.
But Pei Du's patience was far greater than he'd expected—if he hadn't asked, the man probably would've kept it from him until the very last second.
With a silent sigh, he wiggled his fingers, easily squishing Pei Du's cheeks, making his thin lips pout slightly from the pressure.
"If I hadn't asked, you weren't gonna tell me, were you?"
Pei Du was still trying to figure out how to break the news. At his question, his eyes widened slightly. "No."
"I was planning to tell you when we got back."
The trip wasn't over yet—even though they'd been called back early, he still wanted to stretch out their vacation time.
Even if it was just the trip back.
Just as he thought.
Chu Lanting pinched his cheek gently and said softly, "We'll reach the main star in seven hours. Telling me now is no different."
His tea-brown eyes were lit up by the nebulae beyond the airship, showing a shade different from usual.
Even so, the look in those eyes never changed.
Still gentle and kind, still tough and strong.
Pressing his lips together, Pei Du told him about the sudden Zerg invasion.
This was normally classified military intel, kept under wraps to avoid causing public panic.
But Chu Lanting was different—he was his partner, the one he'd walk through life with.
"How sud—...den."
Chu Lanting's eyes flew wide, and when something suddenly hit him, the look in them shifted.
He'd been living so smoothly in this world that he'd almost forgotten he'd transmigrated into a book.
Even though he hadn't read much of the original story—only two short pages—those two pages had still revealed how the main couple first met.
The book opened with the male lead having already regained his memories and brought the cannon fodder who'd been taking care of him on Planet 207 back to the main star.
Then the scene shifted: shortly after returning to the main star, the male lead went off to battle again.
During that battle against the Zerg, the male lead happened to save the love interest. As a doctor, the love interest repeatedly ignored orders to run onto the battlefield and save wounded soldiers.
Through their repeated encounters, feelings grew between them on the battlefield.
In a later fierce battle, the love interest took a fatal blow meant for the male lead.
The second page described the male lead visiting the love interest in the hospital, just as he woke up—the moment their eyes met, spanning a thousand years.
The male lead in the book was Pei Du, and the cannon fodder brought back to the main star was, of course, himself.
Chu Lanting never imagined that despite trying his best to steer away from the book's plot, he still couldn't dodge the original storyline.
Something seemed to stick in his throat. His eyelashes fluttered, and when he caught the confusion in Pei Du's eyes as he looked at him, he quickly turned his head away to stare out the window.
"What's wrong? You feeling okay?"
With the Zerg suddenly invading, Pei Du, being a Major General, naturally had to lead the troops into battle.
Besides, he'd been the one fighting the Zerg all these years—knowing their weaknesses, he couldn't afford not to go.
But rules were one thing—what he felt in his heart was another.
The moment the call from headquarters came in, he didn't pick up right away like he used to. His first thought was to grab his beloved and run.
He didn't want to leave him—he wanted to stay wherever he was, forever.
Seeing the complicated look on Chu Lanting's face,
Pei Du rubbed the soft pad of his palm and asked quietly.
Chu Lanting shook his head. "I'm fine."
He was just feeling a little down.
It wasn't that he didn't trust what he and Pei Du had.
It was that he was afraid of the plot from the original story.
What if there was no escaping it?
Was this really how it was going to end for him and Pei Du?
Was the warmth he'd fought so hard to keep really going to be handed to someone else, just because the book said so?
It wasn't just his throat—his whole heart felt stuffed with cotton, aching with a dull, suffocating pressure.
His slender back trembled. Chu Lanting bit his knuckles to keep from sobbing out loud.
He knew he shouldn't be like this. Pei Du was too sharp—he'd definitely notice something was off.
But he couldn't help it.
Before he knew it, his vision blurred with tears. He didn't dare blink, afraid they'd spill over.
That would make it even harder to explain.
The control room wasn't big, but Chu Lanting had a small frame.
The moment he turned away, Pei Du couldn't see his face anymore.
So when he saw the slight tremor in the man's shoulders, Pei Du's heart clenched too.
He stood, bent over, and scooped the man into his arms.
Settling back into the driver's seat, Pei Du gently wiped the tears from his face with his sleeve.
"Why are you crying? The battlefield is dangerous, sure, but I can protect myself."
"With you here, I wouldn't bear to let myself get hurt."
