Chapter 3: Tower of Terror 03
byChapter 3: Tower of Terror 03
Without thinking, Pei Yi ran forward, but soon felt someone leaping towards him from behind. The forceful rhythm and great strength, covering at least three meters in a single leap, what kind of monster was this?
Neither left nor right options were viable, nor did he want to randomly enter a room in case he couldn't escape. Conveniently, there was a pole outside, which he grabbed and climbed.
As the creature approached, Pei Yi caught a glimpse of its green face, terrifying fangs between its teeth, its body covered in white fur, with black, sharp nails, and pallid, stiff skin—a male zombie.
The male zombie charged towards Pei Yi's direction.
Climbing the pole, Pei Yi avoided the zombie below stabbing with its sharp nails, but upon reaching the third floor, he encountered another pair of zombies, forcing him to climb down again.
Caught between going up or down, he was trapped in the middle. Luckily, his strength allowed him to hang on the protruding part of the outer wall.
With nothing else to do, he turned on a live stream to watch.
The comments started coming in.
"My God, zombies are so scary, why are there Chinese zombies?"
Pei Yi responded, "This is a seventies tube building, foreign films hadn't been introduced here yet."
"I see, Pei Yi, aren't you tired holding on like that?"
"It's okay, I'll just hang in there to pass. Do you know if converting points to money is real?"
"Of course, it's real, Pei Yi, you've already earned ten thousand."
Pei Yi: "That could work."
Perhaps due to his calm demeanor, the number of viewers on his live stream jumped from the original two to over thirty.
With more viewers, the conversation still revolved around the same two or three people, so Pei Yi casually picked topics to engage with.
Unsure how long he had held on, but when the lights came on, Pei Yi returned to the corridor to find the zombies gone.
Pei Yi checked the time: 10:30, half an hour had passed. The lights had turned on at 9:30 and off at 10, with the lights going out every half hour. The half-hour with the lights on was safe; he had roughly figured out the rules.
Looking ahead, he saw a curving trail of blood leading out of a room. It was from the guy who had said there was no signal, his death was gruesome, not worth mentioning, his neck punctured by the zombie's nails, a bloody mess.
Further on was Chen Mo and the woman's room. Pei Yi wanted to check if they were still alive. Approaching, he saw a body lying inside, with Chen Mo kneeling beside it, head down.
Pei Yi said, "Condolences."
Chen Mo looked up, "You're alright?"
Pei Yi responded, "Lucky. I've seen your friend; he's dead too."
It seemed the death rate was indeed fifty percent, with deaths occurring in pairs.
Chen Mo, no longer looking, stood up and said, "We were all university students out for fun, and now I'm the only one left."
"How did you escape just now?"
Chen Mo replied, "I don't know. After we checked a room and came out, we encountered the zombies. One charged at Xiao Hui immediately, and I couldn't save her in time. I had no choice but to run into a room and hide in a cabinet, and the zombie didn't follow me inside."
"A cabinet?" Pei Yi looked around and indeed saw a cabinet. So for these zombies, the room is off-limits, or is it the cabinet? Either way, he'd have to try it next time.
Chen Mo nodded.
Pei Yi thoughtfully said, "Now that there are fewer of us, let's stick together. — I also found an important clue; the zombies chasing me were all male and looked the same."
"What does that imply?"
Pei Yi shrugged, "Means we don't know. There might be clues in the rooms, look for the most unique aspect of each room."
Chen Mo said, "But every room is different."
"You're right, but for this game, there's only one special point."
Starting from the second floor, with forty-eight rooms, even at a minute per room, it would take over half an hour. Pei Yi felt if the zombies were of the same caliber as before, he could keep hanging outside the corridor to evade them. Just hope the difficulty doesn't increase.
Thus, they checked each room, finishing the third floor's rooms in over twenty minutes.
Moving from the third to the fourth floor, Pei Yi saw the number "4" painted in red on the wall and instinctively squeezed his lucky dice, knowing "four" is considered an unlucky number in China.
After seeing so many ordinary residential rooms, nothing stood out as peculiar or special. Pei Yi wondered if he missed something, as it seemed impossible to check so many rooms without finding any leads.
He recalled someone mentioning the black building was modeled after a notorious building, where typically, some injustice or tragedy occurred first, followed by various supernatural events. From what Pei Yi knew, such tragedies often happened in places associated with the number four.
Since no clues were found on the second or third floors, he had a hunch that the fourth floor's rooms definitely held clues.
He shared his theory with Chen Mo, who nodded, looking nervous, and checked his watch, "Pei Yi, it's almost eleven."
Pei Yi glanced at the time, five minutes to eleven. "Okay, get ready. Are you climbing the pole with me?" Deciding not to take chances, what if staying in the rooms proved useless? That would mean death, especially with the strength of those zombies.
Chen Mo shook his head, "I'll choose the cupboard, hopefully." They were on the fourth floor; climbing poles on the second floor was one thing, but a fall from the fourth could be fatal.
Pei Yi: "Alright. Good luck." The two prepared separately.
Just past the hour, a series of clicks sounded as the lights overhead went out, plunging the black tower into darkness. It took less than a minute for a few powerful bouncing sounds to follow.
Hiding in a cupboard, Chen Mo had always trusted his intuition and luck, feeling the cupboard would be safe. Yet, he couldn't help but feel apprehensive.
He hadn't paid attention to which room he entered in his haste. He shouldn't have entered a room on the fourth floor in his panic. Despite having 5 minutes left, the lights went out after just one.
Had he and Pei Yi checked the first two, so he entered the third?
Suddenly, Chen Mo realized his mistake; he had walked forward and entered room 404! The thought of possible murders and hauntings in this room made him cover his mouth, daring not to breathe too loudly.
Being small and thin, he squeezed himself into the farthest corner of the cupboard, feeling a pile of soft clothes behind him. Touching to confirm, it seemed like a nightgown, which he picked up and held in front of him. The cupboard had a crack allowing him to see outside, though his view was limited.
Moonlight streaming through the window illuminated the cupboard. Chen Mo saw it was a red nightgown with lace details and a deep V-neck, quite sexy, belonging to a woman.
While he was observing, a rustling sound emerged, seemingly from the bed, like a couple engaged in intimate activities.
With the building supposedly empty, he knew what that meant.
Fortunately, the noise didn't last long. Soon after, Chen Mo heard a shout, peering through the cupboard's crack.
A man's voice, deep and forceful, exclaimed, "You whore! Daring to cheat on me?"
A tall man pulled up a woman, slapping her twice. Due to the dim moonlight, Chen Mo couldn't see clearly but guessed it was a husband catching his wife in the act. The wife retorted sharply, the two hurling insults at each other, one calling her a whore, and she defiantly claimed her right to sleep with whomever she wanted.
The argument escalated.
Throughout, Chen Mo never saw the woman. Perhaps due to the fierce argument, the man harshly turned her around and pushed her, coincidentally towards Chen Mo's cupboard.
Only when he saw the woman's back did Chen Mo nearly faint in fear; she was wearing the red nightgown he had just touched! He kicked the nightgown, attempting to kick it out of the cupboard.
With a creak,
Chen Mo's mind buzzed. He hadn't expected the cupboard door to make such a loud noise! Realizing he had exposed himself, the arguing couple suddenly fell silent, and the room returned to stillness.
—A deathly silence.
Chen Mo sneaked another peek outside, but the couple was gone. The room was empty, with only the moonlight shining on the bed.
Where did they go? Chen Mo checked the time; it was 11:20, with ten minutes left until the lights came back on.
The dim light from his watch illuminated the wardrobe, as he stared intently at the time, praying for it to pass quickly. Just as he was counting the minutes, he suddenly noticed something blocking his view in front of him.
The interior of the cupboard darkened significantly.
Almost reflexively, Chen Mo wanted to scream, but he was so terrified that he didn't even know how to voice his fear.
Lifting his head, he saw a pair of men's eyes glaring fiercely, staring intently through the gap into the cupboard, belonging to the husband from earlier!
