Chapter 39 Malevolent Spirit of the Snow Mountain 09

    January 19th

I received a call from the police and rushed over, the scene was a bit more gruesome than I had imagined.

The group of ten died in various ways. Two couples died in the cable car, naked, frozen to death by the attacking blizzard.

Two girls died in the restroom, with bulging eyes and their tongues bitten off as if they had seen something extremely horrifying. Two men were found dead, head down in four meters of snow, with branches clutched in their hands.

The man who said the snow mountain was haunted died the most horribly, his limbs were cut off and stuffed inside a snowman.

As for Shusheng... he was in a tent, which was slashed open, creating a large hole. There were footprints outside the tent, starting not far from the tent and then disappearing. Shusheng was taking photos before he died.

The police showed me the developed photos. All the photos Shusheng took of me were ruined, either overexposed or blurred, not a single one was clear.

    January 25th

I'm sorry, Nanfeng, I've been at the police station these days. I became a suspect, but fortunately, I was released without charge, as there was no evidence.

Before leaving, I requested to see the photos again. Shusheng must have tried to take many photos before his death, hoping to capture that terrifying person.

Initially, the police disagreed, but due to the widespread publicity of the case and the eerie photos appearing online, they knew hiding them was futile and hoped I could find some clue by taking them home.

I took the negatives home. At night, sitting alone in the cabin, guess what I saw.

Nanfeng, though I don't want to admit it, I was powerless to find in the photos your shadow, a white figure, your face, even as a mere apparition, I recognized it.

Nanfeng, did you do this? Why would you do such a thing?

    ……

    January 26th

These days, forgive me for not writing to you. I cannot accept this reality. If you are blaming me, for what I did back then, I apologize. Come and take me away.

But so many innocent people. Nanfeng, please stop this.

What do I need to do for you to forgive me?

    ……

    January 27th

Did you see the poems I wrote for you? Those are your favorite poems... would you stop if you saw them?

If the person you hate is me. Please, take me away.

    Please, take me away.

    Please, take me away...

    ……

    ……

The diary stops here. Pei Yi frowned, looking at the time; it was already midnight, everyone else had gone to sleep. He sighed. This diary essentially revealed the current backdrop of their story.

He'll share what he saw tomorrow. Closing the diary, he placed it on the table and went to bed.

Just as I was dozing off, the sound of banging erupted from outside the door.

This time, almost reflexively, everyone woke up simultaneously.

Pei Yi got out of bed, followed by Chen Mo, and people from the neighboring room also emerged, all silent, waiting for the noise outside to resume.

"Open the door. It's me, Pei Yi! Open up! I was trapped in the cable car and just got back. The person inside is a ghost. Don't believe him!

"Open the door!" The person outside was knocking violently.

At the mention of a ghost, everyone except for Pei Yi's group visibly paled, instinctively stepping back.

Zhou You, with a trembling voice, said, "Brother Pei! Are you human or ghost?"

Pei Yi chuckled lightly, "What do you think? He returns from the snowstorm at 2 A.M. Would you dare to open the door? If I were a ghost, could you have slept peacefully for another two hours? The one outside is not human."

The entity outside insisted, "Don't be deceived by him, how could someone escape so quickly? He's the ghost, I am real."

Pei Yi coldly asked, "Nanfeng, is that you? Do you still remember Junhuai?" As soon as Pei Yi asked this, the noise outside fell into complete silence.

Pei Yi wanted to ask if Junhuai was killed by you, but instead, he asked, "What will make you stop?"

Asking such a question was quite risky, as angering the evil spirit could hasten their demise.

Besides Pei Yi's question, no other sound filled the room. This was their first time engaging in dialogue with It, and everyone dared not even breathe.

Just when everyone thought It had left, the door began to shake violently, struck by a formidable force. The power was so great that it seemed to make the entire house tremble.

And the eerie voice had completely transformed, as if coming from the throat, piercingly sharp,

    "Open the door!"

    "Open the door!!"

    "Open the door!!!"

The force was too strong, accompanied by a bizarre cry. Pei Yi made a snap decision, shouting:

"Zhou You, let's move the table together. Uncle Feng, Chen Mo, move the cabinet to the window."

They quickly moved the wooden table to the door, blocking it, and shifted the cabinet as well. Little B and Aunt Wu, terrified by this supernatural strength, clung to each other.

This reaction was almost instantaneous, and at the same moment, the force charged towards the window.

Then, Little B said, "Brother Pei, there are windows in the room too!"

Pei Yi said, "To the room, move the bed! Uncle Feng and Chen Mo, to the next room, fast!"

They rushed to the room, Zhou You struggling to lift. Pei Yi, deeming him too slow, picked up the bed single-handedly and pressed it against the window.

Then he went to assist Chen Mo and the others in the next room.

Its speed was also incredibly fast, circling the cabin at a rate more than ten times faster than a normal person. By the time Pei Yi arrived, the window was already being furiously battered, a crack having been forcefully made.

    "Bang, bang, bang."

    "Bang, bang, bang!"

Once the bed was in place, blocking the front, the banging finally ceased.

After everything was done, the men were drenched in sweat; had they been any slower, the force outside would have burst in and torn them apart. Yet, there was clearly no one outside.

Pei Yi took a moment to rest, then stood up, "For now, we should be safe, but I expect it will return tomorrow night."

    "What do we do then?"

"I don't know what to do," Pei Yi shrugged, "We'll figure it out tomorrow. For now, let's get some sleep," he said sternly, without any hint of nonchalance.

With Pei Yi there, everyone felt somewhat reassured. Since all the beds were used to block the windows, leaving only one, they gave it to the women to sleep in. Pei Yi and the others made do with chairs in the hall for the night.

When daylight broke and the snow melted, everyone breathed a sigh of relief at the sight of the sun.

Breakfast was passed in silence, no one mentioned the events of the night before, and everyone was in a poor state, except for Pei Yi, who still looked unaffected. He went outside with Zhou You to move the table away from the door, even stepped out for a smoke, then turned back inside.

Seeing everyone looking worried, he joked, "Don't panic. We still have..." he counted, "four days."

Zhou You sighed, "That's not right. Brother Pei, it's three days. On the seventh day, the ghost comes to claim lives. We don't stand a chance."

This statement made the atmosphere even more oppressive. They could no longer distinguish between game and reality. If it were a game, they felt it might be better to die sooner. But facing inhuman terror before death was something they didn't want.

Pei Yi said, "...", intending to comfort everyone, but Zhou You's remark had dampened the mood again.

"Nonsense, three days is enough. Maybe we can break the mystery today."

Uncle Feng asked, "Young Pei, did you find anything in the diary yesterday?"

Pei Yi replied, "I was about to mention that. We discovered the writings are poems, left by Jun Huai for Nan Feng. I think they are love poems; they were a couple. Jun Huai is a woman, and Nan Feng is a man. Jun Huai was the owner of this cabin."

Zhou You remarked, "No wonder, the cabin’s decor is so fresh and natural. Jun Huai must have been quite attractive."

Pei Yi glanced at him, "Looks are secondary. It's their story that matters. Nan Feng died in an accident, leaving Jun Huai heartbroken. I suspect there's more to this, or Nan Feng's spirit wouldn’t linger. They used to visit the snowy mountain often, and Jun Huai even worked here.

"But after Nan Feng's death, strange occurrences started happening frequently on the mountain, similar to what we've experienced these past few days. The resort was abandoned, and Jun Huai stayed here alone."

"Alone?" Xiao B suddenly asked. "She must be very brave."

Pei Yi said, "It’s not that she was brave, but Nan Feng's spirit spared her. The strange events never happened to her. Initially, Jun Huai didn't believe in the haunting of the snowy mountain. Until one day, a group of photography enthusiasts arrived, including a boy named Shu Sheng. Two days later, when they were about to leave the mountain, all of the enthusiasts were found dead in bizarre circumstances. Initially, the police suspected Jun Huai, but there was no evidence. After returning, Jun Huai realized the mountain was indeed haunted, and the ghost was very likely Nan Feng."

Xiao B asked, "Why would Nan Feng do that?"

Pei Yi shook his head, "The diary ends there. I guess there must have been some unresolved grievances." Aren't ghosts in movies always portrayed with unresolved issues and grudges?

Xiao B suggested, "I have an idea, not sure if it's feasible. Can't we just find Nan Feng's remains and give them a proper burial to avoid further trouble?"

Zhou You asked, "Is there any basis for that?"

Xiao B replied, "That's how it's usually done in ghost movies."

Pei Yi nodded, "Whether it's true or not, it's worth considering as a strategy. Let's hear other ideas too."

Zhou You said, "Brother Pei, I have a thought. Since the cable car has been causing issues, and you said it operates automatically, why don't we shut down the main switch and cut the cable?"

Xiao B quickly objected, "No, that's too drastic! What if it angers the malevolent spirit?"

Zhou You argued, "I think it'll be fine. Remember how I stopped the ghost's numbers? Nothing bad happened. I believe as long as we don't break the rules on the wooden plaque, we'll be safe, right, Brother Pei?"

Pei Yi pondered, "Both of you make sense. Since we've already angered It, let's go all out."

Doctor Feng added, "Then my wife and I will search the cabin thoroughly again, looking for any hidden passages or anything else."

Pei Yi responded, "Okay." He then turned to Chen Mo, "And you?"

Chen Mo appeared distracted, and after being called twice by Pei Yi, he snapped back to reality, "Ah! I need to go to the cemetery again. Brother Pei, that man must be buried there!"
