Chapter 20 Death Race 06
byChapter 20 Death Race 06
Brother Guang turned to Pei Yi, unable to resist saying, "Pei Yi, you now have 18 points. That's enough for four dungeons. Just by participating and getting eliminated, you can still earn two points. Don't leave with nothing, it would be a loss."
"And miss out on S1?" Pei Yi raised his brows, implying that since he joined, he intended to rank.
"S1 isn't for newcomers like you," Brother Guang said. "Seeing you're all beginners, I advise you to grab points when you can in the upcoming races, which will only get more brutal. Chen Mo, your best strategy is to seize points early on but pull back if you can't push through. Hit the brakes and crash into the protective wall on purpose, pretending to withdraw."
Chen Mo acknowledged he understood. However, once he was on the track, he surprised them both with his steady style.
It turned out he had held back too. Pei Yi felt like he was the only fool, speeding crazily in the first lap... Maybe breaking the HL record was just luck?
It seems in JC, there's no room for error. But how to avoid mistakes is a tough question. He knew nothing about JC.
Chen Mo ended up with 2 points. After accelerating and gaining 7 points, he couldn't hold on and lost 5 points but continued to accelerate; however, he didn't beat his previous score and wasn't penalized further.
His score was quite impressive already. Others were either penalized or directly eliminated.
Chen Mo ran over happily.
Su Guang praised, "Wow, not bad, 2 points!"
Pei Yi had no smile. How could he surpass his current best? He would only lose points until being directly eliminated.
The best approach would be to give up on scoring in the first lap, lowering his time and losing 5 points. Even if he couldn't recover, it wouldn't matter. But that would mean forfeiting, definitely not participating in the race the next day, let alone qualifying for S1.
Thinking this through, Pei Yi realized the cruelty of JC. He had earned his HL points too easily, not understanding the significant impact of even a single point.
When it was Pei Yi's turn, somehow, many people had gathered around the track.
People from other groups came to watch Pei Yi race. As far as anyone knew, his single-lap time was the fastest in Area A among nearly a thousand participants. If the system ranked by speed, his could be deemed legendary, unmatched by anyone.
Everyone was eager to see how Pei Yi would surpass himself or whether he'd quit the race in defeat.
"3 minutes 15 seconds, just a bit faster and he might break into under 2 minutes. But that seems unlikely."
"The overall scores in their group aren't high. If Pei Yi finishes in the top two, he might have a chance to qualify for the main race. But who knows how the system will ultimately rank the results and decide on qualifications."
Seated in the race car and helmet on, Pei Yi already had a strategy in mind. Glancing around, he noticed Lu Zai Chuan watching his race. He refocused his gaze forward.
An official raised a black and white flag, the signal light flashed, and the flag waved. Pei Yi's car shot out, accelerating faster than before, reaching over 8,000 RPM, nearing the level of professional race cars.
"My God. He's really trying to outdo himself. What if he goes too hard? No one will be able to catch up then."
"The dashboard has a timer, it's controllable."
"But that's too hard. How to control? Although dying in the scenario doesn't count, severe injuries can affect the brain. Is this guy really throwing caution to the wind?"
"He's a newbie, doesn't know much, understandable."
The sound of the racing car speeding on the track was exhilarating. Watching Pei Yi drive was a pleasure for everyone, turning speed into an art form, almost making them forget this wasn't a real car race but a JC competition.
As Pei Yi crossed the finish line, Lu ZaiChuan and teammate Tong Hu, the blonde from yesterday's video call with Lu, were watching closely.
Timing officials recorded the data. Tong Hu remarked, "I was skeptical before. Now, I see this guy has talent. JC and racing are essentially about bravery. If he's good at racing, he'll handle other scenarios with no problem. Shame he's too arrogant, where does his confidence come from?"
Lu ZaiChuan said, "He has the right to be confident."
"Why?"
"He surpassed himself in the first lap."
Tonghu couldn't believe it, thinking, "Is Pei Yi really disregarding his life? With such speed, a crash could be fatal, deducting points and possibly affecting intelligence after leaving the dungeon?"
During their talk, Pei Yi completed another lap, the sound of his engine growing from a distance. The man in the black helmet revealed only a pair of handsome, deep eyes. His car shot out like a machine gun, continuously accelerating, with the time shrinking.
Theoretically, he was pushing his limits, approaching the extreme speed of 250KM/h, stirring up excitement among the spectators.
"He's really risking it all, driving like that!"
"By the fifth lap, it feels even faster!!"
"At this speed, even the car can't handle it. We probably won't get the best cars until the main race."
The crowd buzzed with comments, watching Pei Yi closely as he seemed to race against time, pushing to his bottom line.
Yet, he fell just short.
Pei Yi won the youth championship four or five years ago. Racing demands excellent physical condition, and while his was fine, his sensitivity to the car had significantly diminished. The system only gave him one night to adapt, which wasn't enough.
The condition of the vehicle, the state of the track, the performance of the tires, etc., all affect the outcome. But now, Pei Yi could only rely on his driving skills, constantly pushing for speed, but there's always a limit.
During the eighth lap, his car suddenly lost balance. Pei Yi quickly steered in the opposite direction, but with an unstable center of gravity, the car spun 180 degrees and crashed into the barrier.
The system alerted, "[Player Pei Yi. Lap 8 score: 0, penalty: 5 points deducted, current points: 2]"
Pei Yi knew it was over. With this score, he definitely wouldn't make the main race or qualify for S1. He took off his helmet, exited the car, and decided not to run the last two laps; there was no point.
Seeing many people standing there, whispering and laughing, Pei Yi ignored them and walked past Lu ZaiChuan.
Lu ZaiChuan said, "If you don't complete the remaining laps, you'll continue to lose points. Then you can forget about making it to the main race."
Pei Yi turned back, aware of many eyes on them, "I know, but I don't want to run anymore. Thanks for the heads up."
"Losing is just that, losing. It's better to admit it openly."
"When did I lose? Has the system announced the final scores yet?"
"It's as good as announced. If you don't finish, your total points remain unchanged at 2, plus the 2 points from the first race, making 4 in total. That score definitely won't qualify for the main race. I doubt you even qualify for S1." This warm-up race will eliminate at least 50% of players.
Tonghu added, "There's also a revival race, but that too requires points."
Irritated by their back-and-forth, Pei Yi's face turned green with frustration. He had thought racing was his forte, an easy win, but entering the competition led to continuous mistakes.
He turned and walked away, ignoring them.
A voice from behind commented.
"Lu God, why bother with such a nobody? Newcomers all think they're the bee's knees, only to end up miserably dead, becoming an NPC."
"Exactly. He thinks just because he won a championship once, he's a god. He's nothing but a street rat."
Lu ZaiChuan chuckled and shook his head, "Really can't withstand provocation."
Hearing this, Pei Yi turned and knocked down the one who called him a street rat. This action prompted others around to rush towards Pei Yi, looking to start a fight.
But they didn't realize how formidable Pei Yi was; a punch from him seemed to split faces.
As they pushed and shoved, they all became too intimidated to approach, and Pei Yi warned, "Watch your mouth."
Around twenty people were against him alone. Pei Yi only had two or three friends here, like Chen Mo, who were too timid to step forward.
Tonghu: "Pei Yi, for assaulting another player, we can file a complaint with the system, and you'll lose points."
"Go ahead."
"You've already lost, get out of S1! Go back to the dungeons, JC doesn't welcome you."
Pei Yi sneered, "Don't worry, I won't be going anywhere. I'll make it into S1, just you wait and see." He knew they were all in cahoots, at least all believers in Lu God. With that, he turned and left.
After he left, someone nearby said, "Lu God, should we get someone to deal with this kid?"
"Exactly, we must report this assault to the system, let them deduct two or three points from him. This newcomer is too rash, doesn't understand any rules."
Lu ZaiChuan, watching Pei Yi's retreating figure, turned to those berating Pei Yi, "We're all players here, try to speak with some decency."
Then to his teammate Tonghu, "You should go back too."
Tonghu said, "This guy seems to have a bad temper, maybe you should consider someone else." His attitude was hesitant, one moment believing Pei Yi had talent, the next thinking him too impulsive.
"We'll see," said Lu ZaiChuan indifferently before heading back to the hotel.
Those left behind looked at each other, confused. Lu God had never cared about what they said before. Today, he spoke up for this newcomer.
This made them both envious and jealous, hoping Pei Yi would lose and exit S1 for good.
