Chapter 2: The Master Chooses Me, I’m Extraordinary
byChapter 2: The Master Chooses Me, I'm Extraordinary
Jiang Yunxin took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. "My Lord, I have absolute confidence in my skills. If you were to pose a problem on the spot and inspect my work immediately, my abilities would be evident. Autopsies are a matter of practical skill, not mere debate. As for being new, everyone starts as a novice. Some novices possess exceptional talent and innate genius."
Her words surprised the crowd.
Jiang Yunxin felt a bit nervous, but she wasn't trying to boast. At this moment, bravado displayed her confidence. If she didn't believe in herself, how could others?
She continued, "If I fail to identify the cause, I am willing to accept punishment and bear the same guilt as the perpetrator. I leave myself at your discretion, My Lord."
Jiang Yunxin looked resolutely at Fang Mingyan.
Give me a chance, and I'll give you an experienced forensic expert. You won't regret it.
In the end, Fang Mingyan nodded. "Take Jiang Yunxin to the morgue. I'll personally witness your reexamination. If you truly possess the skills, I will trust you."
The Criminal Bureau always needed coroners. If Jiang Yunxin's claims were true, then Lian Tianlu's issue wasn't merely about incompetence or carelessness. Such a person could no longer be tolerated.
Lian Tianlu's expression changed abruptly. Jiang Yunxin let out a long sigh of relief.
Autopsies didn't scare her; it was the lack of opportunity that did.
In the bright morgue, Mu Ziqi's body had lain for two days. Fortunately, it was late autumn with cool weather, so the corpse hadn't yet begun to decompose.
Jiang Yunxin lifted the white sheet covering the body, holding a sharp autopsy knife in one hand and pressing on the deceased's abdomen with the other. With a practiced flick of her wrist, the knife spun before following the muscle's contours to slice open the flesh.
Lian Tianlu's previous work had been shoddy. The incisions for resewing were misaligned, and the cuts were neither deep nor wide enough. It seemed he might have just gone through the motions without genuinely examining the organs.
With a soft puff, the skin parted.
Fang Mingyan's gaze shifted from the wounds on the corpse to Jiang Yunxin's face.
Truly, her heart was as still as a tranquil pool, immovable as a mountain.
At this moment, if Jiang Yunxin claimed to be a thirty-year veteran forensic examiner, no one would doubt her authenticity.
As the incision was made, revealing the red, gory organs inside, a pungent smell of blood assaulted their nostrils.
And it wasn't just the ordinary scent of blood.
Upon death, the blood ceases to flow. The remaining blood in the organs cannot be expelled, causing it to coagulate.
Some bacteria that parasitize within the human body also multiply rapidly. Feeding on proteins and other nutrients within the body, the coagulated blood becomes their sustenance. As these bacteria proliferate, the corpse begins to decompose.
Although Mu Ziqi's body appeared unchanged on the surface, internal transformations had already started the moment she died.
Even Fang Mingyan's closest aide couldn't help feeling nauseous. Yet, Jiang Yunxin merely frowned slightly, inwardly grumbling, Why can't they give me a mask? Sigh...
In my twenty years as a forensic pathologist, I've rarely encountered such terrible working conditions.
But now wasn't the time for complaints. After a brief inspection, Jiang Yunxin turned and said, "Your Excellency, could you kindly fetch a large tray for me?"
I can't just leave organs scattered about; I don't mind, but I doubt you all would endure it.
Fang Mingyan nodded, and an attendant hurried off to retrieve the requested item.
Jiang Yunxin continued, "From my examination of the wound on the deceased's skin, it's narrow with identical upper and lower openings. This indicates that the weapon was almost parallel when it pierced the victim's abdomen. Considering the position of the weapon, I speculate that the liver was most likely the target."
She gestured, indicating the location of the liver within the body. Despite the invisible blade still hanging above her head, standing on her familiar autopsy table, she remained calm at this moment.
Just be mindful not to use too many terms that Fang Mingyan won't understand.
Fang Mingyan nodded. "Continue."
Though he wasn't an undertaker, he found Jiang Yunxin's words calm and fluent, entirely distinct from the stammering and fumbling of a novice.
Jiang Yunxin explained, "The abdomen houses the intestines, unlike the chest with its vital organs. It's rare for a single stab to be fatal there. Usually, death results from excessive blood loss, which takes time."
Without even looking at Fang Mingyan, Jiang Yunxin knew she was correct. The victim, Mu Ziqi, couldn't have died instantly; there must have been a struggle.
At this moment, Long Qiao, one of Fang Mingyan's subordinates, brought over a large tray.
With the abdominal cavity open, Jiang Yunxin said, "Although the blood has coagulated, it's evident that there was a significant accumulation inside."
A large amount of blood in the abdominal cavity, usually indicated damage to the liver or spleen.
Jiang Yunxin regretted the lack of gloves but steeled herself to reach in, eventually retrieving an object after a while.
Fang Mingyan's men were stunned.
Though they had encountered forensic examiners before, they had never met a female one. They could never have imagined that Jiang Yunxin's expression as she held up an organ from the corpse's abdomen would be so calm and composed.
It was similar to how she held her bowl while eating with them.
"This is the deceased's liver," Jiang Yunxin said. "Your Excellency, look, there's a clear wound on it... Could you please ask for some clean water?"
In no time, Long Qiao fetched more water.
Then, like washing clothes, Jiang Yunxin meticulously cleaned the bloody, sticky liver.
The wound became clearly visible.
"Your Excellency, the wound is here," Jiang Yunxin said. "By comparing the shape of the wound with that of the weapon, we can determine if they match."
Fang Mingyan nodded.
He wasn't someone who nitpicked, nor would he criticize Jiang Yunxin just because she was new. If something was good, it was good; if not, then it was bad. Her seamless performance during the autopsy—her actions flowing like a gentle stream—was deserving of the term "prodigious talent," even if she were just a beginner student.
For safety, or perhaps to showcase her skills, Jiang Yunxin removed other vital organs like the spleen and kidneys from the corpse's abdomen to examine them, and found no signs of injury on any.
Jiang Yunxin washed her hands and then examined the wound on the victim's neck.
The cut was ruthless.
"The trachea was severed," Jiang Yunxin said. "Lord, in reality, simply cutting the trachea is not immediately fatal, as air can still pass through the severed ends, allowing the person to breathe. What's lethal is that blood can enter the lungs through the sliced airway, obstructing respiration, eventually leading to suffocation."
Fang Mingyan pondered. "So you're suggesting that the throat slash might not have been the direct cause of death, but rather the wound in the abdomen."
"Not exactly," Jiang Yunxin contemplated. "If we were to compare which injury would kill faster, it would depend on the immediate first aid administered to the victim. However, both injuries are fatal. Based on my experience, stabbing someone in the abdomen during a fight often occurs in a fit of rage, without necessarily intending to take a life. But slashing the throat is a blatant attempt at murder."
The intent behind the act could significantly influence the legal consequences.
One was a killing committed in the heat of a mutual combat, while the other was premeditated murder.
