Chapter 38 Six Years Left
byChapter 38 Six Years Left
In the twentieth year of the Republic of China, it was not a peaceful era.
Sheng Xiyang woke up in the morning and heard the news broadcast from next door. The news mentioned something about the Commander-in-Chief's telegram... something about the Henan Army, Northwest Army, Guangdong Army, and the New Guangxi clique...
At the moment he heard these somewhat familiar names, Sheng Xiyang suddenly realized that for many years to come, the entire country would be in turmoil.
For a moment, Sheng Xiyang sat on the bed, dazed.
The twentieth year of the Republic of China... the twentieth year.
It was now May.
In four months, the northeast would be invaded.
Similarly, in six years, Nanjing would fall.
This seemed to be the first time since coming through time that Sheng Xiyang had thought about these issues.
For so many days, he always felt as if he were living in a dream. Even if he knew it wasn't a dream, he at least felt like he was living in a warm illusion constructed by Sheng Ai.
He had no idea how chaotic the outside world truly was.
The war that ended last year displaced countless civilians and left many places in ruins... Sheng Xiyang didn't even dare to think about it.
Someone knocked on the door; it was Xiaoxiu, speaking softly, "Young Master, are you awake? Eldest Young Master asked me to call you. It's time for school."
Sheng Xiyang came back to his senses and responded to Xiaoxiu.
He got up, washed up, and put on a white shirt and a plaid tie in front of the full-length mirror, gazing at himself with some confusion.
Six years, only six years left. Was his life limited to just six years? Or was there any way to make a difference before the end? At the very least, he couldn't spend these six years in a daze, like a real young master.
Sheng Xiyang didn't know what to do.
He went downstairs and saw Father, Mother, and Sheng Ai having breakfast.
Father was reading the newspaper, occasionally shaking his head, seemingly disagreeing with what was written.
Sheng Xiyang sat down beside Sheng Ai.
Soon, his plate was filled with special Nanjing breakfast dishes.
Sheng Ai had set aside a portion for Sheng Xiyang, "Eat. After you finish, go to school."
As he was about to leave, Sheng Xiyang paused and asked, "You... you're going to work?"
Beside them, Father said unhappily, "What 'you,' can't you call him 'brother' anymore?"
Sheng Xiyang hadn't spoken yet.
Sheng Ai reached out and gently ruffled Sheng Xiyang's hair, saying to Father with some exasperation, "Which news story upset you again? He usually calls me 'brother.'" He then turned to Sheng Xiyang, "I have to go. There's work at the trading company. The driver will take you to school later."
Sheng Xiyang could only nod.
Watching Sheng Ai's departing figure, Sheng Xiyang felt melancholic.
After suddenly realizing the state of war in this era, Sheng Xiyang began to worry about when the war might reach him, or when... Sheng Ai might leave and never return.
Thinking this way, Sheng Xiyang felt an intense pain in his heart.
There were two classes today, and Sheng Xiyang stayed at school for lunch.
When he had nothing to do, he leaned against the corridor beside the artificial hill, watching students chatting in small groups, wondering where they would be when the situation became chaotic in a few years or even a few months.
Suddenly, someone put their hand on Sheng Xiyang's shoulder, "I've been looking for you everywhere. Turns out you're here."
Sheng Xiyang looked up and saw Cao Jing.
After a few seconds of eye contact, Sheng Xiyang suddenly asked Cao Jing, "What do you think if I join the army?"
