Chapter 47 Survival on a Deserted Island 9
by 轻云淡Chapter 47: Survival on a Deserted Island 9
Looking around, there was no sign of bread or milk. Su Han felt a bit disappointed but didn’t let it get her down. She stood up, took the deer meat, and began to roast it.
Gradually, the aroma of the meat became rich.
"Let’s eat," Su Han called out to her companion.
Zhong Rui gave her a hard-to-read look, his eyes dark. It was this person who suggested playing separately, and now it was also this person who suggested eating together. What did she even want from him?
Su Han didn’t notice. She took a hearty bite of the roasted meat, feeling extremely satisfied, and sighed, "If we hadn’t stocked up properly, going out hunting in the rain would’ve been a nightmare."
Zhong Rui casually replied, "Animals don’t come out much in the rain, so even if you hunt, it’s hard to catch enough food."
"Too much food is a problem too. Like us, we have to find ways to use up and preserve the deer meat," Su Han complained.
Zhong Rui went quiet.
Then, they looked at each other and sighed at the same time.
**
In the newly built wooden shed, Lei Ming was huddled in a corner to stay out of the rain. However, his cheeks were red, and his forehead was burning up, clearly not normal.
He was running a fever... Lei Ming was worried but kept his cool. After learning that getting wet in the rain could cause a fever, his teammates had all promised not to leave or give up on each other. No matter what happened, everyone would support each other and move forward together.
Soon, a teammate returned with a sparrow and three bird eggs, a pitiful haul.
Lei Ming took a deep breath and said calmly, "I have a fever." He thought that there was no need to hide things between teammates. Understanding each other's conditions would help them think of better strategies to face the upcoming challenges.
But—
Old Li frowned, his words tinged with an unmistakable hint of disdain, "We’re not strong enough, and a sick teammate is just dead weight."
Yet, before this, Old Li had been terrified of being left behind. He’d asked his teammates over and over whether they would abandon him if he got sick. Lei Ming had always promised they wouldn’t. But when it came down to it, he didn’t hesitate to abandon others.
Old Zhang patiently reasoned, "Food is scarce, and drinking water is limited. If we insist on loyalty, we might all die together. It’s just a game..." He wanted Lei Ming to voluntarily suggest leaving.
Lei Ming covered his face with his right hand, almost laughing to the point of tears. It’s just a game, and even so-called friends couldn’t stand by each other in tough times. What else could he expect? Screw ‘no one gets left behind’! Some people talk a good game but are utterly unreliable in critical moments!
He took a deep breath, picked up his machete, and with lightning speed, cut down the supports of the wooden shed.
The shed collapsed with a loud crash, accompanied by the startled cries of Old Zhang and Old Li.
Lei Ming smiled with satisfaction, "I built this shed alone, and I even caught a cold doing it. Since we’re going our separate ways, there’s no reason to leave the shed for you. When disaster strikes, everyone fends for themselves. Find your own way."
As soon as he finished speaking, he cut his own throat with the machete, taking himself out of the game.
"Shit, shit, shit!" Old Li cursed several times, then couldn’t help but sneeze.
Old Zhang quickly said, "Let’s go, find a place to take shelter from the rain!"
The two quickly left.
However, finding a sheltered place was difficult. They walked in the rain for a long time but still couldn’t find a place to stay. By then, both had contracted the "fever" debuff.
**
Bei Bei held a lotus leaf to shield herself from the rain, then scooped some stream water to drink and washed her face. This was a critical moment, and she needed to keep her cool and stay sharp.
On rainy days, prey was hard to catch. Some people, unable to find prey, resorted to hunting players and stealing their backpacks.
She had just witnessed someone's backpack being stolen, leaving them with nothing and collapsing on the ground. Fortunately, she was well-hidden, or she wouldn’t have escaped either!
"Ah," Bei Bei sighed softly, completely at a loss. It was only the fifth day, yet the game had already become this difficult.
She originally had two companions. But one fell ill, with no medicine to treat it, and was knocked out of the game. The other went out hunting and never returned—no one knew who took them out.
"Five more days," Bei Bei muttered, her expression blank, clueless about how to survive the coming days.
**
"Here, clean drinking water," An Rongyue said coolly, handing over two bamboo tubes.
Standing before her was a man with pointed, rat-like features. Hearing her words, his face lit up with joy, and he hesitantly handed over three fist-sized sweet potatoes. "These are from my special ability, just obtained today, absolutely fresh!"
"Hmm," An Rongyue responded nonchalantly, quickly stashing the sweet potatoes into her backpack, then brushed him off and left.
The man hurriedly extended an invitation, "A girl like you, wandering alone is so dangerous. Why not join our team? We'll definitely protect you!"
"Not interested," An Rongyue replied coldly, refusing without hesitation.
"Hey—" the man tried to say more, but An Rongyue had already walked away briskly.
Only after confirming she was out of sight did An Rongyue slow her pace, letting out a slow breath. Then, she muttered softly, "Dangerous to wander alone? It's precisely because I left the temporary team at the right moment that I've managed to survive this long! Otherwise, I'd have been done for already. Protect me? Yeah, right!"
**
Under a lush tree, a fat man and a thin man were sheltering from the rain, shooting the breeze.
The fat man initiated the conversation, "Remember that guy in the camp who took down three guys single-handedly?"
The thin man, who had been patting water droplets off his clothes, paused, "The one with the bottomless stash of fish?"
"Exactly, him!" the fat man confirmed emphatically. "I've been keeping an eye on him; since the first day of the game, he hasn't stayed in the camp."
"So what?" the thin man shrugged. "If I had that much fish, I'd be worried about being robbed too. Staying out of the camp is smart."
The fat man reminded him, "But he often comes to the camp to trade! I think he must have found another place to live, and it's not far from the camp, which is why he frequently travels between his residence and the camp. I tried following him once, but he lost me."
"A residence?" The thin man was momentarily stunned, then his eyes lit up. "How much supplies must be stored there! Enough for us to make it through the game, right?"
But reason quickly returned. He said expressionlessly, "Just the two of us? We'd be walking right into his trap! Don't forget, he has a female player companion too, both of them are fierce!"
The fat man grinned slyly, "What if we gather more people?"
"You mean..." the thin man's eyes lit up.
"Gather twenty people, and we'll take on the boss together!" the fat man declared boldly. "After defeating the boss, we'll split the loot, and all survive until the 10th day to finish the game. He can take on three, but can he take on ten? Even if he can, can his companion?"
"Sounds feasible," the thin man quickly started working out the details. But then, he pivoted, "But where is this residence?"
The fat man wasn't concerned, "With the camp as the center, we'll do a thorough search in all directions. We'll definitely find it."
As they chatted happily, a calm male voice suddenly came from above, "Leave those two alone, drop the idea."
The two men under the tree were startled and couldn't help but look up. They saw a young man casually sitting on a tree branch, looking completely at ease.
Had their plan been overheard? The fat man's expression turned sour.
The thin man, however, said, "Brother, those two are tough, you definitely can't handle them alone." He mistakenly thought the young man had marked the two as his prey and didn't want others to interfere.
A deathly silence fell.
After a long while, the young man slowly spoke, "Must you act?"
"Of course! Or we'll starve to death!" the fat man retorted confidently.
The young man let out a soft sigh and muttered under his breath, "Then I have no choice but to eliminate you first." With that, he jumped down from the tree.
"Ah—"
"Ah—"
Screams rang out.
Moments later, the tall and thin figures vanished into white light. Lin Xinghai wiped his dagger clean and walked away calmly.
Everything fell back into silence.
**
The next morning, the system's robotic voice chimed in right on schedule, "Day 6 of the game, 38 survivors remain."
The number further decreased.
But Su Han was too preoccupied to care, her mind preoccupied with, "What should we do with the venison that's about to go bad?"
An adult sika deer weighs about 150 pounds, leaving over a hundred pounds of meat after removing the offal. Despite trading, curing, and eating as much as they could, it was clear that there weren't enough hands and coarse salt.
It was raining outside, and An Rongyue was nowhere to be found, so there was no way to get help.
"We've done all we can; just toss what we can't eat," Zhong Rui sighed. "We can't risk getting sick from eating spoiled food."
Su Han understood, but her heart still ached a little, and even obtaining a bottle of milk and a piece of rye bread couldn't cheer her up.
After a long pause, she finally steeled herself and said in a detached tone, "Just throw it away!"
As Zhong Rui started to get up, Su Han stopped him. "I'll go and grab some maple sap too; I'll be quick."
The bamboo tubes were almost out of water.
Zhong Rui nodded. "Then I'll hold down the fort."
"Alright."
After agreeing, the two went their separate ways.
Once the decision was made, Su Han didn't hesitate and tossed the uneaten venison. But she chose the spot carefully, tossing it where players often passed by.
Whether players picked it up or animals ate it was no longer her problem.
Right after Su Han left, An Rongyue happened to walk by. Seeing the pile of venison on the ground, she was at a loss for words. Regular players were starving, while the top players couldn't finish their prey even if they tried, letting it go to waste—what a gap!
An Rongyue sighed repeatedly, then approached to carefully select, taking two good pieces of meat before leaving—this was the benefit of being in the same instance as a big shot, might as well take it. Taking too much would just go to waste if not eaten in a day, so it's best to take only what you can handle.
On the other side, Su Han collected maple sap, filling all the bamboo tubes in one go before returning to the cave. On her way back, she also checked the traps and took all the prey inside.
**
On the 7th day, the system's robotic voice finally changed its tune, "The clouds have dispersed, the sky is clear, and the weather is gradually becoming hot."
"It seems like a high-temperature environment, requiring a lot of clean drinking water," Zhong Rui said casually, taking a sip of maple sap.
And Su Han couldn't help but miss the large ice blocks in her Portable Storage.
Author's note: Zhong Rui: This is the person who suggested playing separately, and also the one who suggested eating together. Hmph, women.
Su Han: My heart is only for single-player games, yet you want to pull me into multiplayer romance ≧﹏≦
