Chapter 59: Trapped in War, Part 10

In the alley, a short man peeked his head out, seemingly observing the surroundings.

"Bang—" A gunshot rang out, and the bullet grazed the man's forehead.

Instantly, his hands were drenched in sweat. The short man thought things were going south and quickly ran for it.

Footsteps echoed behind him, as if soldiers were chasing after him.

The short man darted left and right, slipperier than an eel, with a faint smile appearing at the corner of his mouth.

The soldiers chased after him, only to find themselves in a dead end.

At that moment, the short man struggled to climb over the wall, successfully escaping into another alley.

"Chase them!" The soldiers tried to retreat from the dead end but found their escape route blocked by a large truck.

Immediately after, someone threw lit firewood, torches, and old books into the dead end.

A fierce fire quickly took the lives of ten soldiers.

"So, lack of intelligence is a fatal flaw. How can you just chase after seeing someone? You should think before you act," the short man who was responsible for luring them commented nonchalantly, watching the entire process from the side.

In the ruins, a figure flashed by.

A soldier spotted it and called his teammates to investigate.

Just as they reached the corner, a large net woven from vines fell from above, set by the ambushers, trapping the ten soldiers.

Straw and firewood had been laid out in advance, along with cooking oil.

Yu Baowen flicked the lighter, and the flames instantly spread at an extremely fast speed. By the time the soldiers broke free from the net, they were already surrounded by raging flames.

"Didn't expect my talent to come in handy," Yu Baowen murmured to herself, standing at a distance watching the soldiers perish in the fire.

In another alley, a squad of soldiers was searching the area.

Suddenly, a hand shot out and yanked a soldier into a corner.

"Help!" The soldier tried to call for help from his comrades, but the next second, four daggers plunged into his abdomen.

The soldier's eyes widened, struggling desperately and trying to draw his gun. But within a few seconds, the daggers were pulled out and stabbed into his abdomen again.

The soldier died, his eyes wide open.

A girl with wavy long hair wiped her dagger and said indifferently, "Nine more to take out."

A bespectacled male student nodded, "Yeah, wait for me to snag someone."

The other three companions gave an "OK" gesture.

Ten, nine, eight... The squad kept losing soldiers. At first, they just thought their comrades had gone far away. By the time they caught on, only four remained.

    The soldiers quickly regrouped.

"The last four are tough..." the male student muttered to himself.

"Should we let another team handle the rest?" the wavy-haired girl suggested, "If we can't handle the remaining soldiers, let's leave them to others."

As soon as he finished speaking, a smoke grenade was thrown among the soldiers. White smoke billowed up, effectively obscuring their comrades' view.

The male student's eyes lit up—this was his chance! Without hesitation, he quickly dragged another soldier into the corner. Four daggers flashed out, and soon, the soldier was lifeless.

The male student kept going, dragging more soldiers into the corner.

But just as he grabbed another soldier, the deadly smoke started to clear.

    The male student was speechless.

    What a setup.

The other two soldiers, seeing their comrade captured, immediately drew their guns to intervene.

The male student did not hesitate to use the hostage as a human shield in front of his chest. But while he could shield himself from one side, the other side was exposed.

At that moment, a red dot appeared on the forehead of another soldier. In the next instant, his forehead was struck, and he was critically wounded.

    A sniper?!

The male student instinctively looked in the direction of the bullet, only to see someone lying on the roof, aiming.

"Bang—" After being hit in the forehead, the soldier's heart was also struck.

This time he collapsed, unmistakably dead.

Seeing only two enemies left, his allies emerged from hiding and charged in to assist.

In no time, the entire ten-man squad was annihilated.

The male student looked up, only to find that the sniper had already left.

On the other side, Zhong Rui and Su Han, along with their team, fought fiercely and successfully eliminated four squads. The system then announced, "The current total number of soldiers in the city is 400."

At the same time, in several corners of the city, several people let out a collective sigh of relief. Fortunately, they were not fighting alone.

After a full day of running around, they managed to whittle down the number of soldiers to just 87. Zhong Rui led his team back to the residential building to rest.

In the evening, Su Han sipped on rice porridge and pondered a question seriously, "How did the soldiers enter the city? If they all came in from one direction, wouldn't it be enough to set traps on the necessary routes?"

With some luck, they could wipe out all 600 soldiers at once.

Zhong Rui was contemplating the same issue. Hearing her, he remarked coolly, "The city has four gates: east, south, west, and north." This implied that he suspected soldiers would spawn from all four gates.

Su Han thought for a moment and suggested, "Let's scout out a gate tomorrow."

"Alright," Zhong Rui agreed, then mused, "I don't know if the overall quality of players has improved, or if the teammates matched by this server are particularly strong, but the cleanup progress is much faster than I expected."

Originally, he thought he would have to do a third of the work himself. If it had come to that, he would have tried a bit and then given up without hesitation, as no one is a savior.

But now, he felt a glimmer of victory on the horizon.

As night fell, a squad of four soldiers gathered around a fire to warm themselves. They took out mineral water and compressed biscuits from their bags and ate quietly, lost in thought.

They had been chasing a dozen survivors, only to find them fiercely determined. Seeing no way to escape, the survivors turned the tables and fought them hand-to-hand.

Caught off guard, they lost six men in an instant.

Despite killing the survivors, the remaining four were still shaken and deeply unsettled.

At that moment, a strong wind blew past, making the flames dance wildly.

Suddenly, one person covered his eyes and screamed in pain, "What the hell? This wind is burning my eyes! I can't open them!"

The others sensed it too, but it was already too late.

Eight strapping young men emerged from the tall weeds nearby, slowly walking out.

One of them chuckled, "Extra-hot chili powder! Enjoy the burn! You won't be opening those eyes for a good fifteen minutes."

Two of them lunged forward, immediately rushing to stab the soldiers in the abdomen with small knives.

A series of pained grunts echoed. Soon, silence reclaimed the area, with only the crackling sound of the fire remaining.

The next morning, after breakfast, Zhong Rui led his team to the east gate.

Upon arrival, they hid in a nearby office building.

Zhong Rui whipped out a telescope like a magician and observed the situation at the city gate.

Su Han stared at him, dumbfounded, thinking to herself, "What doesn't this guy have?"

"Want it?" Zhong Rui asked kindly, handing over the telescope.

"You keep it," Su Han said, turning her head to gaze into the distance.

After a while, the system's mechanical voice announced, "Day 12 of the game. White supply crates: 2/50."

"E44 City has 7,388 survivors left, including 346 players and 7,042 Resident NPCs. 42 soldiers remain."

"Today, 600 soldiers have entered the city. They’re armed with pistols and have full stamina at 100. Upon sight, they will unconditionally shoot and chase survivors."

Su Han’s eyes widened in surprise, "There were 87 soldiers last night, but only 42 remain this morning?"

Zhong Rui’s lips twisted into a smirk. He said with unwavering confidence, "We’ve got this."

"Mm," Su Han murmured, her eyes drifting to the window.

As soon as the system's voice finished, a swarm of soldiers appeared at the east gate.

Su Han glanced over and noticed there were exactly 150 of them. They were arranged in ten rows of fifteen, looking orderly.

In moments, the fifteen squads fanned out, searching for targets on their own.

Su Han observed the retreating squads with a poker face, thinking it would be better to act after they had dispersed. If they were too greedy and attacked all 150 at once, what if they got hit by stray bullets and died? That would be a raw deal.

Beside her, Zhong Rui looked troubled, "150 people... that's quite a lot." His tone hinted he could handle fewer.

Su Han couldn’t help but think her partner was a bit too good at this.

At that moment, a figure hiding nearby was discovered by the soldiers and started running while dodging, eventually heading straight for the office building!

Su Han slowly uttered three words, "Yu Baowen."

"Do you know her?" Zhong Rui asked.

"We've dealt with each other for a while. She's a good person," Su Han added silently in her heart, except for being a bit too capable, she has no other flaws.

"Then let's save her," Zhong Rui said indifferently.

Everyone's expressions turned serious as they quickly found places to hide.

On the other side, Yu Baowen struggled laboriously up the stairs, breathing slightly heavier.

At this moment, she was fuming. If it weren't for drinking rainwater and causing her stomach to make "gurgling" noises, she wouldn't have been discovered by the enemy soldiers!

In reality, she had a constitution that allowed her to drink well water and rainwater without any issues. In the previous game instance, she had also drunk rainwater without any problems. She had instinctively assumed that the rainwater in the game was safe to drink.

Who would have thought the game included a probability mechanic! She had been careless and fell victim to it. Now, her stomach was churning, her legs felt weak, and she lacked strength all over.

Oh well. Yu Baowen thought gloomily, once she reached the fourth floor and the soldiers caught up, she could just use a rope to escape by jumping off the building.

With so many hidden mechanics in the game, who hasn't been tricked before? Everyone has had to endure it.

Yu Baowen tried to pep herself up as she reluctantly climbed the stairs. Suddenly, she felt a scorching gaze fixed intently on her and turned around abruptly.

Su Han greeted her with a smile, "Fancy meeting you here again."

It was her. Yu Baowen unconsciously breathed a sigh of relief.

Zhong Rui listened intently to the footsteps and after a while said, "Get ready, the enemy is coming."

As soon as he finished speaking, the figures of soldiers appeared in the stairwell.

In a flash, a barrage of steel pellets rained down on the targets.

Yu Baowen was stunned but was gently pulled into a corner by Su Han.
