Chapter 204

"Nian Nian?"
Cheng Jing noticed the anomaly and asked urgently, "What's wrong?"
Electronic static buzzed intermittently as Jiang Nian stared intently at the unusual phenomenon ahead. Using his superpower’s sensory abilities, he quickly analyzed the cause:
"The fog isn’t an illusion—it’s a superpower that blocks energy… capable of causing magnetic interference. Our drones must have crashed because of this."
Superpowers can cancel each other out. No matter how strong you are, running into your counter leaves you powerless.
This time, even the support-type ‘deadweight’ trait was useless.
Yang Kai gazed ahead and muttered to himself,
"A high-level psychic’s illusion, combined with a blocking superpower that disrupts electronics and cuts off external communication. Even if we snap out of the illusion, we’re still stuck in this fog."
"Surrounded by tens of thousands of zombies—one scratch and you’re done for. Forget regular folks—even superpowered guys wouldn’t make it out…"
This place was a real deathtrap! At least before their team arrived, it had been. Otherwise, someone would’ve found it by now.
Their powers couldn’t cut through the fog, yet the fog continued advancing toward them.
Fortunately, among the troops led by Chu Yi was a wind-type superpowered individual like Li Liang, keeping the fog from swallowing them.
From above, one could see a boundary line formed where the fog clashed with Jiang Nian’s superpower, splitting Guan Shan Prison in half.
On one side was the blue-white glow of Purification Superpower, while the other was shrouded in thick, almost viscous fog. Zombie shadows flickered in the haze, yet not a sound leaked out.
*Bang—*
*Bang—*
After seeking approval from Cheng Jing and Chu Yi, Jian Cheng took two blind potshots into the fog.
The bullets vanished into the mist—no sound of impact, no ricochet. Yet the next moment, a hail of bullets came flying back without a sound.
Lu Ningzhou and Zhao Lei combined their superpowers to throw up a barrier, blocking the attack while confirming that the fog could block sound.
Chu Yi turned to Little Ji.
"Little Ji, is your superpower effective against this fog?"
Tang Ji shook his head.
"No. My power needs to latch onto the controller to block them. Without a clear target, it’d just backfire on us instead."
"Fine. Then we’ll have to buy time till the controller shows up."
Chu Yi’s face darkened. After a moment of thought, he asked Cheng Jing,
"Wanna blast the place and smoke ’em out?"
*A pause.*
Cheng Jing gave a slow nod.
"Worth a shot. As long as it only blocks superpowers and not bullets, things will be much easier..."
'Whoosh—'
Just then, the gunfire ceased, but two razor-sharp whooshes followed.
Moments later, a hook-and-chain shot out from the dense fog ahead, followed by a five-meter-long steel-plate cleaver.
The iron hook gleamed coldly, while the butcher's knife, stained with blood, glinted menacingly under the scorching sun as it swept toward them.
If they'd been surrounded by the fog, a large number of them would have been cut in half.
Indeed, the traps here were layered, as if pre-programmed.
'Clang—'
Zhao Lei manipulated his superpower to erect an iron wall for defense while warping and anchoring it into the ground to prevent retrieval.
Tang Yi and several other superpowered troops with enhanced physique activated their abilities, their bodies swelling as they grabbed chains thick as a baby's arm and heaved with all their strength.
'Bang—'
The chain snapped under the immense force. One end Zhao Lei stomped on to prevent it from lashing at teammates, while the other was swiftly retracted into the fog.
Soon after, the fog attempted to advance again but failed. The ensuing illusion was promptly shattered by Jiang Nian, and another round of bullets was fired, all of which were blocked...
After two repetitions, the surroundings temporarily quieted down, seemingly at a tense standoff.
Only then did Cheng Jing say to Chu Yi:
"It seems they've played all their cards. It's our turn now. Whether it's a person or the Zombie King behind this fog, it's time to reveal itself."
Thanks to their thorough preparation, formidable strength, and the team's high vigilance without reckless actions, they had survived. Another team might have been wiped out just by those 'poor survivors' they saw upon entering.
"Alright."
Chu Yi nodded and turned to order the troops to counterattack with heavy weapons.
The fog might muffle sound, but that didn't mean the explosions weren't hitting their mark. If it were truly invincible, it would have already overwhelmed them.
Earlier, Jian Cheng had only tested with gunfire—light probing fire that barely made a dent. Now, with rocket launchers and mortars taking turns, though the sounds vanished into the fog, dismembered zombie limbs and energy cores kept flying out from the explosions.
The scene looked perversely gratifying, but everyone knew that had they not been alert earlier, their guns and superpowers would have been aimed at their own teammates.
"..."
Nearly half an hour later, the fog dissipated amid the blast smoke and debris, exposing a battlefield littered with corpses. The few remaining zombies, hauling their mangled forms, stepped over the fragments of their kind and charged in another mindless rush.
Strangely, not a single Superpower Zombie had appeared yet.
Behind the zombie horde, a row of gunmen in camouflage uniforms, holding guns, could faintly be seen.
