Chapter 72: How Could You Betray the Secondary Consort?

The raging fire illuminated the entire night sky, rousing nearly everyone in the village. Villagers rushed with buckets of water to douse the flames.

In the late stages of his pregnancy, Wei San's alertness had waned. The day's events, particularly the appearance of Wei Jiu and An San, had left him deeply troubled, causing him to sleep much later than usual. Consequently, he slept more profoundly that night. By the time the thick smoke awakened him, the fire had already spread from the woodshed to the main house.

He immediately rose and dashed towards the door, only to find it barred from the outside with a wooden beam. The windows were similarly blocked.

With no other option, he began to batter the door, but it was too sturdy to break open quickly. Perhaps the impact of hitting the door disturbed the fetus, as a sharp pain pierced his abdomen.

Was this to be his end?

As the fire intensified and the thick smoke brought tears to his eyes, his strength gradually failed him. A wave of inexplicable panic surged through Wei San.

His child hadn't even had the chance to be born and see the world, and he hadn't had the opportunity to return and beg forgiveness from his master. How could he die such a humiliating death here?

Fortunately, there is always a way out. He heard shouts from outside—someone had discovered his house was on fire.

He struggled to his feet, cradling his belly protectively with both hands, and continued to ram the door with his shoulder, gritting his teeth.

Wei San's desperate efforts finally caught the villagers' attention. Second Master Liu shouted, "Qiu Niang! Qiu Niang is still inside!"

    "Quick, quick! Save her first!"

Wei Zheng hadn't even reached the village when he saw the towering flames from afar. A knot of dread tightened in his chest, sensing something terrible had happened. His pace quickened instinctively, and he arrived just as Second Master Liu was shouting for help.

The village chief ordered his men to break down the courtyard gate. Fortunately, the gate wasn't very sturdy, and two strong young men forced it open with a single shove.

Wei Zheng quietly blended into the crowd and followed the leading young men inside.

The house was almost entirely engulfed in flames, thick, choking smoke filling the air and obscuring any view of the interior.

The fire was too intense; rushing in recklessly might not only fail to save anyone but also cost them their own lives. The young men hesitated, unsure what to do, but Wei Zheng charged forward without a moment's thought.

    "Hey! Wait!"

The young men tried to stop him from acting rashly, but how could a group of farmers with no martial arts skills hold him back? In the blink of an eye, Wei Zheng was already at the door.

Just then, a heavy thud struck the door—it was Wei San, still trapped and desperately ramming the door.

The fire had spread too quickly, his strength was nearly exhausted, and the smoke left him dizzy and disoriented. Wei San knew that waiting helplessly would mean certain death. With no other options, he dragged over a chair and lifted it to smash the door.

One strike, then two, then three—the door remained unmoved. Gritting his teeth, Wei San raised the chair again, but just as he was about to strike, he heard the sound of the wooden beam being removed from outside.

Someone had come to rescue him.

As the door was pushed open from the outside, a surge of brilliant hope ignited in his eyes. But when he saw who his rescuer was, the joy of escaping death instantly transformed into terror.

    "Mas… Master?"

    Why was he here?

Wei San froze on the spot.

Wei Zheng was wearing Wei Liu's face—the mask he had deliberately chosen. If Qiu Niang was indeed Wei San, then upon seeing this face, he would inevitably react.

Wei Zheng admitted he was taking a gamble, but fortunately, it paid off.

The firelight clearly illuminated the shock and fear in Wei San’s eyes. A wave of dread washed over Wei Zheng, especially when Wei San called him "Master." The fear of nearly losing him forever made Wei Zheng’s hands tremble uncontrollably.

Without another word, he yanked Wei San into a crushing embrace.

In the face of life and death, the anger and resentment caused by Wei San’s betrayal seemed trivial. He pulled Wei San tightly against him, but the latter shrank back, as if afraid of being discovered. This only ignited Wei Zheng’s fury. He growled in frustration, "Wei San! How dare you! How dare you run away even while carrying my child! Just wait until I punish you when we return!"

    His master knew everything…

Wei San stiffened, no longer daring to struggle, allowing Wei Zheng to sweep him up into his arms.

"Qiu Niang, is Qiu Niang alright?"

As soon as the two emerged from the courtyard, Second Master Liu and the village chief rushed over. Seeing that Wei San was unharmed, they breathed a sigh of relief.

The elderly neighbor kindly suggested, "Quick, bring Qiu Niang to my house to rest. She’s inhaled so much smoke—who knows if it’s harmed her or the baby."

At her words, Wei Zheng instinctively glanced down and saw Wei San, silently clutching his clothes, pale-faced and covered in a fine layer of cold sweat on his forehead.

Wei Zheng asked anxiously, "Where does it hurt?"

Wei San bit his lower lip, unwilling to speak. This only made Wei Zheng more frantic, but he couldn’t bring himself to vent his anger. Instead, he bottled up his frustration, growing increasingly worried. It was the elderly woman who voiced the concern, "Could it be that the baby’s been disturbed? We need to find a doctor quickly. If she miscarries, it’ll be a disaster."

Only then did Wei Zheng snap out of his daze. Looking at the fragile assassin, who seemed as if he might break at the slightest touch, his brow furrowed in pain, he immediately cast caution to the wind. Holding Wei San tightly, he used his *qinggong* and raced back to the prince's manor at the fastest speed he had ever mustered.

The elderly woman stared, dumbfounded, at the two figures suddenly flying away. Trembling, she pointed at their retreating forms and exclaimed, "That person… that person flew away with Qiu Niang!"

Wei Zheng rushed into the manor in a frenzy, carrying someone in his arms. The hidden guards and assassins in the manor were all startled. When they saw the six-months-pregnant person in his arms, their jaws dropped in shock.

When had their master gotten someone pregnant right under their noses?

What about Wei San? What would happen to Wei San? Had he fallen out of favor? Should they continue searching for him or not?

The assassins and hidden guards were filled with speculation, uncertain of what their master intended.

It was already late at night, and Imperial Physician Liu was still sound asleep when he heard a loud bang—his door had been violently kicked open.

The elderly physician was nearly scared to death.

"What’s going on? It’s the middle of the night—can’t you let an old man sleep?"

Grumbling, he got up and saw the culprit who had kicked the door storm in. Without a word, the man hauled him out of bed and shoved him aside, carefully laying the person in his arms on the bed. Only then did he turn and command, "Heal him!"

Imperial Physician Liu glanced at him, then turned to look at the pregnant person occupying his bed. Pointing accusingly, at a loss for words, he finally managed, "Your Highness, how could you cheat on the Secondary Consort behind her back?"

It hadn’t been long since the wedding, and now he was bringing another person back to the manor—this was truly unacceptable!

Wei Zheng, filled with worry and anxiety: "…………"
