Chapter 69 Time for the Audition
byChapter 69: Off to the Audition!
Zheng Zheng had already experienced the joy of grocery shopping.
This time, as soon as they entered the supermarket, his little legs zipped on the scooter straight toward the snack aisle.
Wen Yuchen followed behind Zheng Zheng, telling Lu Chenghe to grab a shopping cart.
The snacks on the shelves made Zheng Zheng's eyes go wide—jelly, potato chips, chocolate biscuits...
Zheng Zheng could see but not reach them, and even if he did, Wen Yuchen wouldn’t let him eat them.
He stared at the snacks, and seeing that Wen Yuchen had no intention of buying any for him, his little figure seemed to sag with disappointment.
Zheng Zheng crouched down, snagged a box of candy from the bottom two shelves, and put it in the shopping cart.
The candy box looked colorful—it was mint candy, not suitable for Zheng Zheng.
Wen Yuchen took it out, but Zheng Zheng grabbed his hand.
Zheng Zheng pointed at the candy: "Wanna eat."
Wen Yuchen shook his head and refused: "Zheng Zheng's still too young, can't have it."
Zheng Zheng sighed: "Okay then."
Wen Yuchen walked ahead, planning to buy some other things.
Behind him, Zheng Zheng looked up and shared a glance with Lu Chenghe.
Lu Chenghe patted the shopping cart and asked: "Wanna ride?"
Zheng Zheng shook his head, pointing at the shelves: "Wanna eat."
Lu Chenghe shook his head: "You're still too young, can't have it."
Zheng Zheng insisted: "Wanna eat. Uncle Fu Fu, buy."
Aww, the child was even whining.
Lu Chenghe’s ears automatically filtered out the "Fu Fu" part, taking it as Zheng Zheng calling him "daddy."
As for potato chips and jelly, Lu Chenghe wouldn't dare buy them for him.
Under Zheng Zheng’s expectant gaze, Lu Chenghe hesitated in front of the shelf for a while and finally chose some teething biscuits.
Over in the baby aisle, Wen Yuchen had already picked out Zheng Zheng’s usual snacks like fruit puree and rice crackers.
Turning around, he noticed the two hadn’t caught up yet and went back to find them.
Then he saw Lu Chenghe holding Zheng Zheng up, picking and choosing from the shelves.
Wen Yuchen: ...
He walked over, put the selected snacks into the shopping cart, and said: "Finished picking?"
Lu Chenghe, who was helping Zheng Zheng pick out fries, was caught in the act. He smiled awkwardly: "Almost done."
Wen Yuchen just waited for them to finish.
Zheng Zheng was thoughtful, holding three packs of fries: "Zheng Zheng eat, Daddy eat, Uncle Fu Fu too."
Dinner was cooked by Wen Yuchen—regular home cooking.
After the meal, Lu Chenghe casually asked Wen Yuchen about his plans for the next day.
Wen Yuchen put down his chopsticks: "I landed a gig; I'm going for an audition tomorrow afternoon."
Lu Chenghe asked: "What about Zheng Zheng? What'll you do with him? Is it convenient?"
Wen Yuchen looked at him and said: "Going to my parents’ place in the morning; they’ll watch him."
"Oh." Lu Chenghe’s voice fell.
Wen Yuchen shot him a side glance and said: "If you want to see Zheng Zheng, just go to my parents’ place."
Hearing this, Lu Chenghe perked up and then pressed further: "Then, when you start filming, can I visit the set?"
Wen Yuchen paused: "Better not."
"Why?"
"What identity would you use to visit me?" Wen Yuchen countered.
Lu Chenghe seemed dejected: "As a friend, of course. Though it could be more than that, if you don’t object."
Wen Yuchen stood up and nodded: "Okay, then wait until our relationship progresses further, and you can find an opportunity to visit the set.
Alright, it’s getting late. You have work tomorrow, so head home and rest."
After cleaning up the dining area and kitchen, Lu Chenghe said his goodbyes to the father and son and left.
Zheng Zheng was sitting on the sofa watching TV. Hearing this, he stood up and said to Lu Chenghe: "Uncle Fu Fu, goodbye. Later, get more fries."
Lu Chenghe waved with a smile and asked Wen Yuchen: "What did Zheng Zheng mean?"
"Saying bye to you, and that he wants to get more fries with you later."
"Ah, got it. Goodnight, Chenchen."
"Mm, goodnight."
Early the next morning, after breakfast, Wen Yuchen brought Zheng Zheng over to his parents’ house.
Wen Yuchen carried Zheng Zheng, who used his chubby little hands to knock on the door.
Wen Guosheng walked to the door with his hands behind his back and looked through the peephole to see a plump, rosy little face.
He opened the door with a smile, taking Zheng Zheng from Wen Yuchen: "Grandpa’s little sweetheart, missed you tons."
Wen Guosheng affectionately held little Zheng Zheng and didn’t forget to invite his son in: "Chen, come on in."
After saying that, he carried Zheng Zheng away: "Honey, see who’s here."
Left sitting on the sofa, Wen Yuchen picked up a washed peach and bit into it.
Soon, Jiang Yun came out of the bedroom carrying the little chubby buddy, followed by a pouting Wen Guosheng.
Wen Yuchen explained why they'd come to Jiang Yun and Wen Guosheng.
Jiang Yun sat beside him, gently patting his hand and said, "It's a good opportunity. Give it a try. If you don’t like it, you can always go back to your old job. Zheng Zheng will be fine with your dad and me watching him, so don’t worry."
Wen Guosheng chimed in, "It’s a sure thing you’ll get the part. My son takes after me—got the looks."
In the afternoon, when Wen Yuchen drove away, Zheng Zheng was still taking his nap.
Wen Yuchen was a little worried, afraid Zheng Zheng would cry if he woke up and didn’t see him.
Even though he’d told Zheng Zheng over and over since yesterday.
At the audition site, aside from Wen Yuchen, a bunch of other people had come to audition for the role of Qing He.
Actually, the role of Qing He was initially played by a handsome alpha actor.
Last year, he blew up a bit through Zhang Chunhui's film, and this year, Zhang Chunhui was quite satisfied with him for the role of Qing He.
But he couldn’t keep it together—once he became famous, he got carried away.
Halfway through filming the series, he got caught for tax evasion and soliciting.
He’s locked up now.
You see people mess up, but never this bad.
The audition had already begun. The other actors were cramming the script, making every second count, worried they’d mess up later.
Only Wen Yuchen found a spot to sit, holding his phone and tapping his leg without thinking.
After noticing he was tapping his leg, he even gave his leg a slap.
Soon, Wen Yuchen was up next.
This role was personally selected by Zhang Chunhui.
As soon as he saw Wen Yuchen, he liked what he saw. Never mind the face—his build and height alone were totally Zhang Chunhui’s type.
In the original work, Qing He is good-looking, highly skilled in combat, but a bit of a stone-faced, single-minded type.
Wen Yuchen was a little nervous during his self-introduction.
Zhang Chunhui didn’t ask him to perform a scene—after all, any actor can do stone-faced.
What he valued most was movement skills. After all, Qing He’s character is defined by his high combat ability.
The show’s packed with fight scenes.
Rather than choosing someone who needs a double for fight scenes, it’s better to pick someone with a solid foundation.
Zhang Chunhui directly asked Wen Yuchen to show him something—boxing, whatever worked.
When Wen Yuchen first started, his heart was pounding.
But by the time his fists swung with a whoosh, he was totally in the zone.
Zhang Chunhui had seen videos of Wen Yuchen from his son, but watching through a screen had nothing on seeing it live.
Great build, powerful punches.
After Wen Yuchen finished,
Zhang Chunhui clapped and laughed, "Excellent! Smooth moves, great rhythm. How old are you, and how long have you been practicing martial arts?"
Wen Yuchen wasn’t sure why he was asking but replied, "Twenty-three. I started when I was five."
Zhang Chunhui smiled and patted his shoulder, "A real up-and-comer!"
Then, he said to the others, "Any objections? If not, Qing He’s role goes to him."
Everyone shook their heads, all agreeing with Zhang Chunhui.
After all, they’d had it with doubles and fight coordinators for other parts.
Thus, Wen Yuchen was confirmed to play Qing He.
He could start on set tomorrow.
