Chapter 104: Song Jiang, Don’t Sleep
by 溪河江海Chapter 104: Song Jiang, Stay Awake
Song Jiang wasn't particularly surprised. In some of the novels he'd read, there were plenty of characters who behaved just like Fan Jian.
"How do you know all this, Slacker Bro?"
Mei Moyu chimed in, "The boss had me look into all this. There are quite a few women who were victimized, and they're all willing to step forward and point the finger at him. And here's a really weird coincidence."
Song Jiang asked, "What?"
"..."
"He's broken so many laws. He's gonna do time, right?"
Mei Moyu shoved the last bite of his bun in his mouth and shook his head, disappointed. "He bolted. He took off the same day Fan Bin beat him up. It's been days, and even with a warrant out, there's been no sign of him."
That quick?
Song Jiang rubbed his chin, thinking... Well, going by the usual novel formula, Fan Jian would probably skip the country.
He'd bring this up with the boss later. Scum like that should face justice.
Once he's locked up, a few years of bread and water, a few years on the sewing machine, and he'll straighten out.
...
...
That evening, Song Jiang was back at his driver gig.
He'd mentioned to Fu Zhichen earlier that bad guys usually try to flee the country or sneak across the border.
Fu Zhichen shot back, "Steward Song, that's the cops' problem. Why are you sweating it?"
The car was stopped at a light, waiting for it to turn green. Song Jiang glanced in the rearview mirror at the guy in the back, tapping away on his phone.
He probed, "Still busy, CEO Fu?"
Fu Zhichen locked his phone. Maybe feeling a little hot, he undid the top button of his shirt with one hand.
"What's on your mind?"
Song Jiang silently cranked up the AC.
"CEO Fu, that guy I ran into at the bar—was he one of Fan Jian's guys?"
Song Jiang asked because Mei Moyu had mentioned that Fan Jian was a regular at the same bar he, Mei Moyu, and Xu Can had gone to.
It was too big a coincidence to ignore.
Fu Zhichen raised an eyebrow, a hint of curiosity in his eyes.
Song Jiang said offhandedly, "Slacker Bro said Fan Jian was a regular there, so I put two and two together."
Fu Zhichen looked a little surprised. He took a sip of water before answering, "Steward Song, you guessed right."
Song Jiang caught Fu Zhichen's eye in the rearview mirror.
"I've got no beef with Fan Jian. I really can't figure out why he'd try to hurt me like that. But CEO Fu, I really appreciate you sending someone to find me in time."
Fu Zhichen frowned a little. "You've said that enough times. I don't want to hear it again. In my book, 'thanks' doesn't mean anything."
Song Jiang didn't answer that, instead pushing with another question.
"CEO Fu, if it were someone else, would you have saved them?"
He needed to know.
Would Fu Zhichen care about anyone else like that?
Would he look out for someone else the way he looked out for him?
"Steward Song, that's a strange question."
He said that, but Fu Zhichen still gave him a detailed answer.
"Look, I'm not a savior or a philanthropist. I don't concern myself with other people. But you're by my side—you're mine. I don't want anything happening to my people."
"You get what I'm saying?"
Something in those words hit Song Jiang. His eyes crinkled into a smile, and he grinned at Fu Zhichen. "Mm, got it!"
The light turned green. Song Jiang hit the gas, unaware that danger was already closing in.
A beat-up van suddenly tore out of the cross street at full speed.
It all happened in a flash. Song Jiang only saw it out of the corner of his eye.
His mind flashed an image of the two cars colliding.
He gasped, his heart in his throat, but there was no time to swerve, no time to hit the brakes.
The next second, Song Jiang almost closed his eyes.
"CRASH—"
The road back to the villa wasn't a main street, and there were few cars at the intersection. The deafening crash tore through the air.
The car flipped over, landing on its side at the edge of the intersection.
The engine was still roaring, and white smoke curled up from under the car.
...
...
After what felt like forever, he heard a dripping sound, like water.
His finger twitched slightly. His eyelids felt like lead, and even with all his strength, he could only crack them open a sliver.
"Fu..."
As Song Jiang regained some awareness, his first thought was to save Fu Zhichen in the back seat.
The car was wrecked, and a man who could barely walk couldn't possibly crawl out on his own.
If he didn't save Fu Zhichen, he would die.
His willpower was strong, but his body was completely limp. He wanted to unbuckle his seatbelt, but his fingers couldn't muster the strength. His legs seemed pinned by something, unable to move.
When the crash happened, the immense impact hit him somewhere, his vision went black in an instant, and he blacked out.
Now it felt like all the blood in his body had rushed to his head. It took him a while to realize he was lying on his side against the car window.
The door was flush against the ground, so he couldn't open it to get out.
And aside from being able to think shallowly, he couldn't feel his body at all.
He wondered why it didn't hurt.
Could it be that Lady Luck had smiled on him and he wasn't hurt?
"Song Jiang!"
"Don't fall asleep!"
He heard a hoarse voice calling his name.
Who is it?
He forced his eyes open and looked toward the sound.
His vision was blurry, and he couldn't make out who it was. From the silhouette, the person seemed tall and very familiar.
"Song Jiang! Song Jiang!"
"Don't move!"
"Don't be afraid, stay awake!"
"I'll get you out of there!"
He wanted to answer, wanted to tell the person to save Fu Zhichen first.
"I'm fine..."
Song Jiang used every bit of strength he had, but only a faint whisper came out, so soft he couldn't even hear it himself.
In a daze, he felt a burning sensation in his nose, as if something was about to come out. Something also rose up from his mouth and throat, and he tasted something salty and metallic.
Suddenly, he felt so tired. His whole body was exhausted, and all he wanted was to sleep.
If he fell asleep, what about Fu Zhichen?
Would anyone come to save them?
Would they die here?
He still didn't know who Fu Zhichen liked.
He hadn't made it home yet.
He didn't want to die... not yet.
He couldn't die now...
Something warm and sticky was on his hand.
Song Jiang opened his palm and looked down.
Blood.
Dark red.
So much of it...
Hadn't he not been injured?
Whose blood was this?
