    Chapter 25 I Don’t Want to Know!

    Saturday — rainy.

Fu Huan had an appointment with the psychologist for 9 a.m. All three got up early, and even Guan Yu, still asleep, didn’t notice an extra child in their dorm room. Gu Shiying and Fu Huan tacitly avoided the topic, and since Guo Guo didn’t speak, they came and left quietly.

On the way, they found a breakfast shop and made sure Guo Guo ate his fill. A child who doesn’t fuss, throw tantrums, or pick at his food is easy to care for—he’ll eat whatever he’s given.

As they were leaving, it suddenly started raining. There was only one umbrella in the car. Gu Shiying carried Guo Guo while Fu Huan held the umbrella, tilting it toward Gu Shiying and the child. The drizzle dampened Fu Huan’s left shoulder, but he didn’t mind at all.

Back in the car, Gu Shiying sat in the back seat holding Guo Guo, checking if the child had gotten wet. If Guo Guo got sick, he’d feel terribly guilty.

After a while, he suddenly asked Fu Huan, “By the way, did you bring Guo Guo’s medical record?”

Fu Huan replied, “Yes, I did.”

    Gu Shiying immediately felt relieved.

But then he felt something was off. Their conversation just now sounded a bit like an old married couple. Didn’t they seem like a husband and wife taking their child to the hospital?

Damn it, stop overthinking. Don’t add drama to your and Fu Huan’s lives.

The psychologist Fu Huan had booked was at a private clinic, but it wasn’t the small practice Gu Shiying had imagined. Instead, it occupied an entire floor in a high-rise building in downtown Beijing, where land is worth its weight in gold.

Gu Shiying felt a bit nervous and shared his thoughts with Fu Huan: “I thought it would be a doctor from a public hospital.”

While private hospitals are more favored abroad, in China, private clinics are often seen as expensive and less skilled than public hospitals.

Fu Huan explained, “Dr. Jiang used to work at a public hospital before opening his own private practice.”

Gu Shiying said, “If he could strike out on his own, he must be pretty impressive.”

Fu Huan replied, “You’ll understand once you meet him.”

The receptionist looked at them and then at Fu Huan: “Fu…”

Fu Huan, standing behind Gu Shiying, shook his head slightly, and the nurse changed her question: “Do you have an appointment?”

    Fu Huan said, “Yes.”

The nurse smiled. “Please follow me.”

After confirming their appointment, she led them directly—without any waiting—to a warm and spacious room. On the desk was a nameplate for Dr. Jiang, along with some simple yet stylish decorations.

As soon as they sat down, someone brought in tea and snacks. The atmosphere felt like basking in sunlight, and even Guo Guo seemed more relaxed.

Gu Shiying didn’t touch the refreshments, but Fu Huan casually picked up the black coffee that had been served and took a sip.

Shortly after, a man around thirty years old wearing glasses walked in. He had a neat appearance, dressed in a black shirt and black trousers, clean and tidy. He was also quite tall, almost as tall as Fu Huan.

Dr. Jiang walked up to Fu Huan and said, “You’re here?”

“Yes.” Fu Huan stood beside him, and Gu Shiying noticed that Fu Huan was slightly taller.

Dr. Jiang had a friendly smile. Though tall, he didn’t come across as intimidating.

He smiled and asked Gu Shiying, “What’s your name, young fellow?”

Gu Shiying replied, “Hello, Dr. Jiang. I’m Gu Shiying, and this is Guo Guo.”

“Nice to meet you. Fu Huan told me about Guo Guo.” As he spoke, Dr. Jiang crouched down in front of Guo Guo and magically produced a toy. “Guo Guo, here’s a little gift for you.”

Dr. Jiang interacted with Guo Guo, effectively conducting a preliminary diagnosis to assess his responsiveness, awareness of the outside world, and whether he truly had autism.

Guo Guo did respond, giving Dr. Jiang positive feedback. However, he occasionally glanced back at Gu Shiying and Fu Huan, instinctively showing his dependence on them.

Dr. Jiang added, “He responds to the outside world. He can receive treatment here for a while. However, since you’re not his parents, it’s best if his guardians come along next time.”

Gu Shiying explained, “Only his grandmother is left in his family, and she injured her leg and can’t walk. She should be able to come next time.”

Dr. Jiang nodded. “I think his acceptance of the outside world is fairly good. You can try taking him out more to interact with children his age. His condition is trauma resulting from stress. Intervening with more social and family activities to dilute those memories shouldn’t be a problem. I’m confident he can return to the level of a normal child.”

His words were like a reassurance pill for Gu Shiying. “That’s great.”

Dr. Jiang then turned to Fu Huan. “Today was just a preliminary contact and diagnosis. I’ll draft a treatment plan based on his condition.”

Gu Shiying could understand—after all, they weren’t Guo Guo’s guardians, and a guardian’s presence was necessary. But this was enough for now.

    The initial diagnosis was complete.

Just as Gu Shiying thought they were about to leave, Dr. Jiang called out to Fu Huan.

“Fu Huan, wait. I’d like to talk to you for a moment.”

Gu Shiying looked at Fu Huan. “Then Guo Guo and I will wait for you outside.”

Dr. Jiang arranged for someone to take Gu Shiying and Guo Guo to the lounge to wait.

Gu Shiying wasn’t sure what Dr. Jiang and Fu Huan would discuss, but he felt their relationship might not be as simple as it seemed. They appeared quite familiar with each other. The fact that Guo Guo could receive free treatment probably meant they knew each other already, right?

Gu Shiying couldn’t figure out their relationship, so he took Guo Guo to the restroom before returning to the lounge.

The layout of the lounge was relaxing, with a play area for children. Guo Guo took a liking to the building blocks, so Gu Shiying placed him in the block area to play. Meanwhile, Gu Shiying picked up his phone to look up information about autism to learn more about the condition. He’d only read halfway when he heard arguing outside. The voices grew louder, becoming disruptive.

Unsure when Fu Huan would return and with the lounge door left open, Gu Shiying decided to close it to block out the noise and prevent Guo Guo from getting startled.

As he reached the door, he saw a middle-aged woman with disheveled hair slap a nurse’s shoulder.

    Smack!

“I’ve spent so much money here! Why hasn’t my son shown any improvement?”

    “So-called famous doctors—they’re all frauds!”

    “Refund my money!”

“Tell your Dr. Jiang to come out and see me! My son cut his wrist again today and is hospitalized. He wasn’t this bad before coming here. How did he get worse after psychological counseling here? This place is a scam. Everyone, listen up! This Dr. Jiang is a quack. He only makes people worse. He has no medical ethics and charges exorbitant fees. If you’ve just arrived, run while you can!”

The middle-aged woman continued shouting as she headed toward Dr. Jiang’s consultation room, where Fu Huan was still inside.

Gu Shiying glanced at Guo Guo, who was absorbed in stacking blocks, and quickly closed the door.

The nurse who was slapped had eyes welling up with tears, but sticking to her professional duty, she stepped forward to stop the woman.

"Ms. Tang, Dr. Jiang is currently seeing a patient. Could you please calm down first? He will be out shortly."

"I don’t care if he’s seeing a patient! I want an explanation now! My son is still in the hospital fighting for his life. Pay me compensation!"

Gu Shiying noticed she kept emphasizing compensation rather than her son’s life, indicating her strong agenda. However, taking her anger out on others was wrong—the nurse had been slapped for no reason.

The middle-aged woman knew exactly where Dr. Jiang’s office was and made a beeline for it.

The doctors and nurses in the clinic were all busy with their own tasks, and no one reacted fast enough to stop her.

Gu Shiying said to the nurse, "Call security!"

The nurse, with tears in her eyes, replied, "They just went downstairs to help move something and haven’t come back up yet."

Seeing that Ms. Tang was about to storm into the office and raise her hand to slap the nurse again, Gu Shiying reached out to block her, grabbing her wrist.

"Lady, my friend is inside. Please don’t disturb them."

"This is none of your business! Get out of my way if you know what’s good for you!"

"Let go, or I’ll sue you for sexual harassment!"

Gu Shiying had never encountered someone so unreasonable and eventually released her hand. The nurse also moved out of harm's way.

Although he let go of the aggressive Ms. Tang, Gu Shiying could hear her inner thoughts:

"I know exactly what my son is like—there’s no curing him. Every psychologist who treats him becomes our family’s cash cow. I’ll get whatever money I can from each one."

Just as Ms. Tang was about to push forward again, the young man she threatened did not step aside as she expected.

Gu Shiying still blocked her path: "You’re here to extort money, aren’t you? Your son can't be helped, and you know exactly why."

He could only hear the strongest desires in her mind; the details of how Ms. Tang manipulated her son’s condition were not revealed.

Ms. Tang was shocked that he'd figured out her game: "What nonsense are you spouting? Are you implying I’m not taking my son’s illness seriously?"

Gu Shiying backed away: "I’m not sure, but your behavior seems like an attempt to extort Dr. Jiang."

Caught off guard, Ms. Tang forced a cold laugh: "Ha! He charged me sky-high fees for consultations and registrations, yet my son’s condition has only worsened. Extort him? Young man, if you don’t understand, get lost!"

She waved her hand at Gu Shiying, seemingly enraged again, and he almost got scratched by her nails.

    It was pretty scary.

At that moment, the door behind him suddenly opened, and two tall men stood on either side of the doorway.

One was Dr. Jiang, and the other was a calm-looking young man who radiated intensity.

Ms. Tang, nearly 1.7 meters tall, seemed to deflate in their presence and took a step back in fear.

Dr. Jiang, though usually gentle, now spoke sternly: "Ms. Tang, let’s sit down and talk."

Ms. Tang’s arrogant and rude demeanor faded, and she tripped over her words.

"D-Dr. Jiang, my son cut his wrists again. Your treatment didn’t work—you have to compensate me!"

Dr. Jiang normally wouldn’t discuss a patient’s condition in public, but he had heard Gu Shiying’s rebuttal. Without Gu Shiying’s words, he might have believed Ms. Tang and fallen for her scam. As someone running his own private clinic, Dr. Jiang was not someone to be bullied easily.

"Did you give your son his medication on time? I recall Nurse Wu mentioned last week that your son’s medication ran out, and you didn’t come to pick up this week’s prescription. He’s been off his meds for a week. His condition was already severe, and your lack of cooperation makes our job harder."

At this point, Fu Huan moved from behind Dr. Jiang to Gu Shiying’s side and said under his breath, "Let’s go."

The clinic's problem was for Dr. Jiang to handle; they didn’t need to get further involved.

Gu Shiying: "Okay. Guo Guo is still in the lounge."

Fu Huan frowned, displeased: "Did you almost get scratched just now? Don’t be so involved next time."

Gu Shiying retorted: "I wasn’t being involved! That nurse was slapped so hard she cried—how could I not help? Besides, Guo Guo is receiving free treatment. It’s fine."

Fu Huan sighed lightly and gave him a thumbs-up: "Next time, don’t jump in when I’m not around. You never know what kind of person you might meet—think about the danger."

Gu Shiying: "Since when were you lecturing me?"

"Don’t you need lecturing? Wherever there’s trouble, there you are, Captain Hero." Fu Huan wasn’t trying to yell at him, but he often saw Gu Shiying putting himself in dangerous situations while doing good deeds, so his tone grew more serious.

Gu Shiying felt like he always ran across such negative people, but there was nothing he could do.

    "It just happened this time."

"Next time, remember to call me. At least I’m better in a fight—less risk of you getting hurt."

    "Maybe."

Gu Shiying wasn't about to promise. What were Fu Huan’s intentions? If he helped too often, would he someday be forced to offer himself in return? No way!

He still owed three meals, so he might as well take care of one now.

Gu Shiying: "Let me treat you to lunch."

Fu Huan hesitated for a moment: "I’ll take you and Guo Guo back later. I have something to do at noon—can’t eat with you."

Gu Shiying blurted out: "What is it?" He immediately regretted his big mouth.

Fu Huan: "My mom asked me to go home for lunch."

"Your family is local?" Gu Shiying only then realized Fu Huan was a Beijing local. Fu Huan was so low-key—he had always assumed he was from out of town.

"Yeah." Fu Huan didn’t say more about his family.

Fu Huan took Guo Guo back to Grandma Lin’s house. They explained Dr. Jiang’s requirement for a parent to accompany him during treatment. Afterwards, Gu Shiying asked Grandma Lin how much chili sauce she could produce in a week, mentioning that he and his classmates could help promote it. Grandma Lin agreed and even offered to give them a cut.

On the way back, Gu Shiying started drafting a WeChat moment to promote Grandma Lin’s chili sauce.

Just as he wrote "leaves your mouth watering," Fu Huan suddenly called him: "Gu Shiying."

    Gu Shiying: "What?"

Fu Huan pulled out a blue-patterned box from somewhere and handed it to him: "For you."

Gu Shiying was taken aback and refused: "No merit, no reward. Why are you giving me a gift?"

Fu Huan’s expression cooled. He grabbed Gu Shiying’s hand and pressed the gift into his palm: "It's part of your training—you have to accept it."

What a high-sounding reason—if only Gu Shiying hadn’t heard the thought conveyed through his scorching-hot wrist.

"Gu Shiying, I want to ask you out, you know?"

Fu Huan quickly released Gu Shiying’s hand, but Gu Shiying stayed in his gift-holding pose.

He glanced at the gift again and again: "..."

He thought to himself: "Damn it, Fu Huan, I don’t want to know!"
