Chapter 56: Face Value

Zhou Yanze made a trip to the Zhou family. Upon arriving, he heard Zhou Jun arguing with family members. Zhou Jun stood in the courtyard shouting, stunning everyone—including Zhou Yanze himself.

Zhou Jun: "A woman as wonderful as Sun Chun marrying into our family is her marrying beneath her. You should go apologize to her, beg her to be my girlfriend—you should feel honored! Do you even know what nobility is? Do you know what pride means? You bunch of philistines!"

Even their rivals would feel relieved seeing their son pull this kind of stunt.

Zhou Yanze walked in with a smile, and the Zhou family members looked even more green around the gills.

Zhou Jun: "Uncle? You're family too. Since you're here, come with us! Do you know Sun Chun? She's genuinely an amazing woman. She doesn't care that my dad is the factory director, doesn't care if I'm a technician—she doesn't even like me! She didn't look up to me because our family has money; she's all about true love! I wore her down, and she's finally starting to come around. But last time she was wronged because of our family, and I can't let her settle for me like this. Zhou Yanze deliberately said, "I've got a blind date this weekend."

Zhou Jun: "Then bring your blind date along—she's gonna be a Zhou anyway. Let's all go apologize to Sun Chun together and show our sincerity!"

Lu Yun let out an "Ah?"—"I have to go too?"

Zhou Yanze said with a sneer, "Next, his dad chased him out with a broom. Even after getting booted, he was still saying his dad should back him up and that he was going to find his grandpa."

Lu Yun: "Is his grandpa gonna go too?"

Zhou Yanze: "Maybe he will. He'd think having the old folks tag along would show Sun Chun how much he respects her."

Zhou Yanze had something else to tell Lu Yun. He said, "Some woman's been tailing Zhou Jun. He seems to know but doesn't give a damn."

Lu Yun thought of Chen Shu!

Chen Shu wasn't just tailing him at the market last time—she's still at it?

There's gotta be something going on between Chen Shu, Zhou Jun, and Sun Chun that Lu Yun doesn't know about. Lu Yun figured she wasn't the only one in the dark—Zhou Jun and Sun Chun probably were too.

Zhou Jun's got to have rocks in his head—he knew Chen Shu was following him and didn't care?

If she weren't so dead set on snapping up those stamps that'd be worth a fortune later, Chen Shu wouldn't have kept following Zhou Jun. She'd already mapped out her next move and tailed him again. Who knew she'd stumble onto the Zhou family circus—Zhou Jun actually wanted his uncle to go with him to apologize to the Sun family. Does he even know who his uncle is?!

What really got Chen Shu's attention was his uncle's blind date. In the novel, his uncle had always been single—where did a blind date come from? A man like that? Chen Shu wouldn't even dare to dream!

Maybe it was just a token blind date that went nowhere. In the novel, Zhou Jun's uncle stayed single his whole life. The Zhou family even used that as an excuse to rag on him—they're all out of their minds! Why scold him for that? He was single, not broke. If she had money, she'd stay single too. Who wants to spar with Jiang Xiangqian every damn day!

That scumbag Jiang Xiangqian thought he was being so slick. He came home less and less, always using work as his excuse. Don't think she didn't know he was pining over Lu Yun. Ever since he met her, he's had bags under his eyes—he's gotta be up all night thinking about her, drowning in regret.

Chen Shu didn't feel bad about it either. In the novel, Lu Yun and Jiang Xiangqian never got together anyway. She didn't know what kind of man Lu Yun planned to marry—even by the time Chen Shu got reborn, Lu Yun still wasn't married!

Thinking about the stamps, Chen Shu took her money and went out to buy more. Ever since leaving the post office, she felt someone following her and quickened her pace. Zhou Jun called out to her, and Chen Shu's face darkened. This lovesick idiot—why was he tailing her instead of buying stamps?!

Zhou Jun: "Let's get something to eat."

Chen Shu's face was gloomy. Last time they ate together, he didn't even pay—did he not remember that? And now he wanted to eat with her again?

Chen Shu's next move was to tag along with the female lead and buy stocks. How could she buy stocks alongside her? Her plan was to befriend Sun Chun, and to do that, she needed to stay on Zhou Jun's good side. Don't be fooled—the female lead had the male lead wrapped around her finger, but that innocent act was pure performance. Chen Shu knew their relationship was in the gutter and Sun Chun would never want to deal with her. Maybe the female lead would even play the saint and tell Zhou Jun to let bygones be bygones—who knows!

Chen Shu was done gambling. The courtyard house, the vanity, the stamps—she hadn't snagged a single one!

Chen Shu's face twisted. She hadn't gotten any of it, and neither had the female lead. Who the hell ended up with all of it? She was about to lose her mind from jealousy!

Chen Shu arrived at the restaurant with Zhou Jun. Zhou Jun started venting: "How can I make them willing to apologize to Sun Chun?"

Chen Shu quickly calculated and said, "The Zhou family doesn't know how wonderful Sun Chun is, so they're unwilling. You know what? Bring Sun Chun around so they can see how great she is, and they'll give you two their blessing. Don't you think?"

Why was it that she and Sun Chun were equally conniving, yet Sun Chun got to live the high life, with the whole Zhou family begging for forgiveness—just because she had Zhou Jun whipped? She wanted them all in chaos!

Zhou Jun: "I never thought you'd love me this much."

This brain-dead male lead—love him? She loved money, money!

Zhou Jun: "Last time I left the Zhou house, I told you to stop following me. You stayed away all this time. Today you look at me like that, and you're still willing to help! What you said could work, but I can't let Sun Chun get hurt. Let me think of other ways! I won't eat this meal—you enjoy it yourself!"

Sun Chun finished her meal and was about to leave when the waiter came over to have her settle the bill. That idiot stiffed the bill again! Sun Chun smoothly packed up the leftovers. Once packed, she could pass them off as her own cooking and feed them to Jiang Xiangqian. She wondered if he'd come home for dinner tonight—he definitely wouldn't, right? He was still beating himself up over why he'd ended up with her. If he hadn't, he might've already been married to Lu Yun!

Even if he wanted to marry Lu Yun, what made him think some childhood promise would make her say yes?

How did Lu Yun get such a good life? She was so freaking jealous!

Matchmaker Zhao always came to Lu Yun with the tea. This time she came to Lu Yun saying the Zhou family was in an uproar, though she didn't know the details. Speaking of which, Matchmaker Zhao felt a bit sore about it!

After all these years as a matchmaker, Zhou Jun had made her look like a fool. She thought highly of Zhou Yanze—without him, she'd have had no idea who to set Lu Yun up with!

Lu Yun: "I know."

Matchmaker Zhao: "What do you know?"

Matchmaker Zhao's ears perked up: "Spill it!"

Lu Yun and Matchmaker Zhao talked for a long time. Matchmaker Zhao was just as shocked as Lu Yun and Zhou Yanze. Apparently Zhou Jun making her look bad was just par for the course. She'd seen lovesick fools before, but never this bad!

Lu Yun's father and mother also found out. After hearing about it, they treated Lu Cheng way better. Compared to Zhou Jun, Lu Cheng was practically a saint—just a regular guy who loved his wife a little too much!

Next time Lu Cheng came home, he'd get a hero's welcome.

Lu Yun had the day off. After dishing the tea with Matchmaker Zhao, she hit the market and came out loaded with bags of veggies. They were way too heavy—so heavy she could barely haul them.

Jiang Xiangqian dashed over to help Lu Yun with her bags. Lu Yun instinctively kicked out, and Jiang Xiangqian grabbed his junk, slowly sinking down in agony.

Not Lu Yun's fault—who told him to lunge at her without a word.

Lu Yun: "Are you okay?"

Jiang Xiangqian: "I'm fine, really, I'm perfectly fine. Are you okay?"

Lu Yun: "I'm fine."

Jiang Xiangqian got up and tried to take her bags again. Lu Yun shut him down immediately—she didn't need his help. "I've got it myself!"

Jiang Xiangqian was drowning in regret. Why hadn't he been a decent guy back then? Why did he end up with Chen Shu? If he weren't with Chen Shu, he could help Lu Yun carry her stuff without a second thought!

Lu Yun returned home, and outside the compound, Sun Zhi was hammering on the wall!

Lu Yun was speechless and quickened her pace.

Sun Zhi finally blurted out, "It's all that goddamn cousin of yours!"

So what was the beef between Sun Zhi and Chen Shu?

Sun Zhi: "Everything is the fault of that goddamn cousin of yours. Why did she have to get together with your childhood fiancé? If she hadn't, you would've broken off the engagement once you met him, and I would've seen you as even more out of my league and kept pursuing you, instead of looking down on you like I did before, thinking you were desperate to get married. If that had been the case, there wouldn't have been that blind date with Li Cai, and I never would've married Zhao Lan. If I'd kept at it, maybe we would've gotten married and been a happy couple in this compound!"

Lu Yun: "I can't fully disagree with the first part, but the second part? Not likely."

Sun Zhi: "Why? Do you look down on me that much?"

Lu Yun: "I go by looks."

The only reason things went so smoothly with Zhou Yanze was because she was into looks!

Other people might be lovesick fools, but Lu Yun wasn't one. Zhou Yanze probably wasn't either—he seemed like a very rational man!
