    Chapter 71: Son-in-law

Early in the morning, Lu Yun saw Aunt Jiang in the compound.

Not only did Aunt Jiang dare not provoke Lu Yun, she even took the initiative to dish gossip with her.

Aunt Jiang: "Did you hear? Last night Zhao Lan wanted watermelon in the dead of night. Sun Zhi went out to get some but couldn't find any, and Zhao Lan chewed him out for it. Then Sun Zhi ran to the melon field to buy one, woke up the field workers, and got chewed out by them too."

Lu Yun: "How'd you even hear about that?"

How could she possibly know about him getting chewed out by the melon field workers?

Aunt Jiang didn't admit to following Sun Zhi out again, just gave a forced chuckle. Lu Yun could tell anyway. She could only say that Aunt Jiang really loved getting the scoop on the Sun family. She might not care about other people's drama, but when it came to the Sun family's, Aunt Jiang would lose sleep just to get the gossip. Why? Still, it was all because of Sun's father. She said she'd moved on, but she was still dying to know what was going on in his house.

Aunt Jiang's husband couldn't care less. In fact, he didn't even want Aunt Jiang mixed up with the Sun family. He had always wanted to move out of the compound—not just out, but far, far away. Who would have thought that even after moving, Aunt Jiang would still come over first thing in the morning for gossip?

    Sun's father: "Let's go have a talk."

Aunt Jiang: "What's there to talk about? I don't wanna talk to you."

Sun's father: "I've got something to say to you."

Aunt Jiang: "Say it right here. Lu Yun can hear it fine. If she can't hear it, then I don't want to hear it either."

Aunt Jiang and her husband were getting along great right now. If she met Sun's father alone and it caused a fight with her husband, she'd have to soothe his ego—and she really couldn't be bothered to soothe a man.

Sun's father: "Fine. If you want to say it in front of Lu Yun, then we'll say it in front of Lu Yun. Lu Yun, come with us!"

    Wait, what?

She had to go with them too? She'd heard plenty of gossip, but this was the first time someone had actively invited her to be part of it.

    Aunt Jiang: "Let's all go!"

Lu Yun was dying of curiosity. She really wanted to know what Sun's father had to say to Aunt Jiang.

Outside the compound, Sun's father said, "Stop stirring up trouble like this. I know you're doing all this to get revenge on me, to get my attention. Deep down, you still have feelings for me! I know how you feel, but I'm not getting a divorce. We're too old for this! Don't you think? Do you really want me to leave my wife and marry you?"

Aunt Jiang hauled off and slapped Sun's father across the face. "What the hell are you talking about! My husband and I are doing just fine! I finally know who Sun Zhi takes after—he's just as full of himself as you are. He got rejected by Lu Yun and still wants to chase her, thinking that just because she broke off an engagement, he could have her! You two are way too full of yourselves! Let me tell you, I like watching your family's drama because I want to see your whole household fall apart!"

Sun's father: "You want to see our household in chaos—that just proves you still care about me!"

Aunt Han charged at Aunt Jiang to fight her. Aunt Jiang dodged, and Aunt Han lunged into Sun's father's arms, and they both tumbled to the ground!

Aunt Han started slapping Sun's father repeatedly. "This is what you meant by talking to her, telling her to stop bothering us? Turns out you were so full of yourself that you thought she was doing all this because she likes you! How can you be so shameless!"

    Sun's father: "Quit hitting me!"

Aunt Han: "Now you care about saving face?"

Sun's father: "I said stop! Do you want her to laugh at us? This is all part of my strategy—a strategy, do you understand!"

Lu Yun got a piece of gossip first thing in the morning. Juicy, so juicy!

Aunt Jiang: "A strategy? What strategy? He just thinks I still have feelings for him. As if! I'm not stupid, you know? Look at him—what's even worth liking about him?"

Lu Yun didn't comment. "I'm heading to work."

Aunt Jiang: "What's the point of working? You go in every day and only make that little salary each month. Why don't I have your uncle find you a job, or maybe you'd want to invest in something?"

Lu Yun: "Thanks for the offer, Auntie, but I really don't need it."

Aunt Jiang: "Well, aren't you polite!"

Aunt Jiang finally got it—there was no point trying to take advantage of Lu Yun or mess with her. Lu Yun was a really good girl. Tsk tsk tsk, how did Sun Zhi ever think he had a shot at marrying her?

Chen Qiao's shop was finished with renovations and had put up a hiring notice. Li Meng had a friend she wanted to recommend to work at Chen Qiao's shop. She came to Lu Yun, hemming and hawing for a long time without getting to the point. Lu Yun thought Li Meng wanted to ask for an advance on her salary.

Lu Yun: "How much do you need?"

Li Meng was so moved she was almost in tears. "Boss, you're such a good boss. I don't want money—I have a friend who's looking for a job."

Lu Yun: "She wants to work at our shop?"

That wasn't out of the question. Lu Yun was planning to open another shop anyway, though it wouldn't be ready until the end of the year. But Li Meng really did work hard and diligently. She could have her friend come to this shop first to learn from Li Meng, and later transfer to the other shop.

Lu Yun: "What's her personality like?"

Li Meng: "Hardworking and capable, just not very good with words. She's also a pitiful person—not very valued at home. If she can't find a job, she'll probably have to get married. Her family has picked out suitors who are willing to pay high bride prices, and she's been fighting with them about it at home."

Lu Yun: "Alright. Teach her well. She might even become a store manager someday."

There was plenty of room for promotion at Lu Yun's place!

Not just store manager either—Lu Yun had other ideas. She wanted to build her own brand.

Why wouldn't Chen Shu want to work at the garment factory? It must be because the factory might not be able to keep operating in the future! If there were profit to be made, knowing Chen Shu's character, she would definitely find a way to keep her job there. Lu Yun wanted that garment factory.

Zhou Yanze drove Lu Yun home and pulled out a bouquet of roses. Lu Yun was genuinely delighted.

    Lu Yun: "So beautiful."

Zhou Yanze: "Miss Lu, do you have any thoughts about getting married?"

    Lu Yun: "Sure."

Zhou Yanze: "That's alright. I'll ask again next time."

Lu Yun deliberately raised an eyebrow. "Alright then. You can ask again next time."

Zhou Yanze stood there stunned, his face absolutely gorgeous. Lu Yun reached out and gently pinched his cheek, then took the roses and went home.

Aunt Jiang watched their romance and started feeling dissatisfied with her own husband. Her man simply had no sense of romance at all!

Aunt Jiang didn't doubt her husband's sincerity, but he really was too honest! Or maybe too simple and straightforward?

Aunt Jiang's husband: "I remember now!"

    Aunt Jiang: "Remember what?"

Aunt Jiang's husband: "I remember who Lu Yun's boyfriend is!"

Aunt Jiang was immediately interested. "You know him? What does he do? Either way, he looks like he's in a good position."

Aunt Jiang's husband: "Not just a good position—an excellent one! I saw him when I went to look at some properties. He seems to be developing a residential project. Our transport team wanted to partner with them, but unfortunately they probably look down on our ragtag operation. What a shame."

Aunt Jiang: "Who would have thought that girl Lu Yun would quietly find herself a man like that! Why don't we ask Lu Yun for a favor? We've all lived in the same compound for years—we're neighbors. If she's going to help someone, why not help us?"

Aunt Jiang's husband saw things more clearly than she did and wasn't confused at all. "Ask Lu Yun?"

Aunt Jiang pursed her lips, "That girl has too fiery a temper. Forget it, forget it—happy with what you've got!"

Aunt Jiang thought back to how she'd been subtly showing off in front of Lu Yun these past few days, and her face turned red. She had no idea Lu Yun was this low-key!

From now on, she'd keep a lower profile too. At the very least, she definitely couldn't show off in front of Lu Yun anymore!

Lu Yun couldn't sleep, so she got up and headed to the living room. Her dad came out too, and after a few words, she went back to her room.

Lu's dad said to Lu's mom, "Something's off with our girl!"

Lu's mom: "What do you mean?"

Lu's dad: "Today when she got home, she didn't compliment my cooking, and now she can't sleep. She doesn't look upset—just like something's on her mind keeping her up. And that something should be good news!"

Lu's mom: "That's exactly how I was after you confessed to me!"

Lu's dad: "You mean Zhou Yanze confessed to her?"

Lu's mom: "Are you dense? It's not a confession—it's a proposal! Our future son-in-law is probably about to come meet us officially!"

    Lu's dad: "Really?!"

Early the next morning, Zhou Yanze showed up. He didn't say a word, but his eyes looked like he hadn't slept a wink. Instead of driving Lu Yun to work, he took her to the nearby beach. Lu Yun was expecting to just look at the ocean, but instead she saw a heart shape and words spelled out in roses on the sand: "Lu Yun, marry me."

Zhou Yanze held out a ring and got down on one knee in front of Lu Yun. "Lu Yun, will you marry me?"

Lu Yun held out her finger. "Yes!"

Zhou Yanze spun Lu Yun around in his arms, and she laughed, her whole body shaking with joy, catching a glimpse of the ring on her finger sparkling in the sunlight.

Chen Qiao asked, "Why are you only getting here now?"

Lu Yun: "I had something to take care of this morning."

Chen Qiao: "What was it? Don't tell me it's store stuff. Oh my god, what's that—a ring! You're marrying Zhou Yanze? Did you two go get your marriage license this morning?! And this ring is way too much—I wouldn't even dare buy a fake one in this style. It's pricey, isn't it?"

Lu Yun: "No license yet, but he proposed. Once he officially visits my family, we'll go get it."

Zhou Yanze was really thoughtful. He'd told Lu Yun all this when he dropped her off at work.

Chen Qiao: "I've got to drink at your wedding, and I want to be a bridesmaid!"

Lu Yun: "Of course I'll have you as my bridesmaid."

Everyone in the office congratulated Lu Yun, and she smiled. In the past, she'd had the wrong idea—if her husband was going to be Zhou Yanze, she was genuinely looking forward to married life.

When Lu Yun got home, she flashed the ring in front of her dad and mom, and they both looked pretty smug about it.

Lu Yun: "Zhou Yanze proposed—we're gonna get married!"

Lu's dad: "What do you mean Zhou Yanze proposed? It's that you said yes. When's he coming to see us?"

Lu Yun: "We've already agreed—he's coming this weekend."
