Chapter 79 Remarriage
by 桃花引01Chapter 79: Remarriage
Lu Yun's pregnancy symptom was a reduced appetite, which wasn't a big deal. Eating less was no big deal—she'd regain her appetite soon enough. Although she had morning sickness, it only happened once or twice occasionally. But Zhou Yanze—he seemed more like the pregnant one than Lu Yun did. While Lu Yun was pregnant, he ate even less than she did, and he fussed over her in every way. Lu Yun didn't lose a pound, but Zhou Yanze did.
After a while of this, Lu Yun could eat normally again—even more than before. That was when Zhou Yanze finally relaxed.
Lu Yun had to juggle her shop and her job. Now that Lu Yun's pregnancy was stable and Zhou Yanze's finances were solid, her parents advised her to quit her job and focus on the shop.
Lu Yun mulled it over for a day. They were right—she really couldn't juggle pregnancy, work, and the shop all at once. When Zhou Yanze came home and she told him, he was even more supportive. Even without her parents' input, Zhou Yanze had been trying to figure out how to suggest it himself.
Lu Yun decided to quit, and Chen Qiao gritted her teeth and quit too. After quitting, she could earn more—she had strong faith in herself. Sister He wanted to quit too, but she relied entirely on Lu Yun, and Lu Yun didn't place orders regularly. She considered it briefly but decided she still needed a steady job.
Lu Yun and Chen Qiao went to the cafeteria for a meal, feeling a bit wistful. Who would've thought they'd quit? When they first got hired at the garment factory, they thought it was a job for life. They ate their favorite zhajiang noodles together in the cafeteria. After eating, they went back to the office, packed up, and got ready to head out.
Zhou Yanze was waiting for Lu Yun. She offered Chen Qiao a ride home, but Chen Qiao declined. Those two were in the honeymoon phase—she wasn't about to be a third wheel.
Lu Yun: "Guess why Chen Qiao doesn't want us to give her a ride home?"
Zhou Yanze: "Why?"
Lu Yun said teasingly: "Because you're too clingy."
Zhou Yanze: "I am too clingy. Can't help it—my wife's putting her friends aside for me, which isn't easy either."
Lu Yun laughed so hard she was shaking all over!
Once Lu Yun started showing, she switched to looser clothes. This baby was probably a good one—Lu Yun wasn't too uncomfortable. Lu Yun didn't mind much, but Zhou Yanze was a nervous wreck. The pregnant woman sometimes had to comfort her husband. To keep him from stressing out, Lu Yun often took him to her parents' place.
One day, Lu Yun spotted Aunt Han and Sun Zhi in the courtyard playing with a child. That child must be Sun Zhi and Zhao Lan's. The little one was cute, and Lu Yun took a second look. Aunt Han didn't say much, but she looked a little troubled.
Sun Zhi often brought his and Zhao Lan's child around, but this was the first time Lu Yun and Zhou Yanze had run into them.
Aunt Jiang wasn't at the compound anymore—she mostly stayed at her own courtyard house now. She'd apparently made new friends and seemed to have truly moved on. Maybe it was also because of the scene her and Uncle Li's kid had caused at the compound last time—she didn't want to come back.
Lu Yun's father said: "That kid's innocent too. I think Aunt Han's softened up lately, especially around the kid. Maybe she has some regrets. Sun Zhi's also settled down a lot compared to before."
Lu Yun: "Maybe."
Aunt Han truly regretted it—she regretted that Sun Zhi and Zhao Lan hadn't stayed together. Not for any other reason than her grandson. Aunt Han said she didn't want to look after her grandson anymore, but when he was actually brought to her, every time she looked at the little one, her heart ached. What if Sun Zhi or Zhao Lan remarried someone else down the road?
Aunt Han urged Sun Zhi: "Now that everyone's calmed down, why don't you just remarry Zhao Lan?"
Sun Zhi: "She won't agree."
Aunt Han: "The fact that you said 'she won't agree' means you'd agree, right?"
Sun Zhi was willing for the kid's sake, not for Zhao Lan.
Aunt Han: "In that case, go after Zhao Lan. Maybe she'll agree? If not, then forget it—at least you tried for your son!"
Lu Yun and Zhou Yanze had never thought about whether they wanted a boy or a girl. Lu Yun hoped for a kid who looked like Zhou Yanze, and Zhou Yanze hoped for one who looked like Lu Yun, but either way, they'd love the child—because it was theirs.
When it came to buying clothes and baby supplies, they had to consider this question. What color to buy? Lu Yun was torn. When she saw Zhou Yanze about to speak, she knew he'd say, "Why not buy them all!"
Lu Yun: "Buy them all?"
Zhou Yanze: "Mm, buy them all."
Neither of them was strapped for cash, so Lu Yun stopped agonizing and bought a bit of everything—some for a boy, some for a girl.
As Lu Yun and Zhou Yanze were leaving the mall, she spotted Sun Zhi and Zhao Lan. Zhao Lan seemed to work at the mall. Sun Zhi appeared to be chasing after her, following behind and carrying her things—looked like lunch.
Lu Yun: "Probably Aunt Han's idea."
Although Lu Yun and Chen Qiao no longer worked together, they still saw each other almost every day. Chen Qiao would come to find Lu Yun, and sometimes they'd have lunch together. Chen Qiao, considering Lu Yun's pregnancy, urged her to let Chen Qiao come to her instead.
Chen Qiao excitedly shared gossip about Sun Zhi and Zhao Lan with Lu Yun.
Chen Qiao: "Did you know? Sun Zhi is pursuing Zhao Lan!"
Lu Yun: "I know."
Chen Qiao: "How do you know? Did you hear it from the compound?"
Lu Yun: "Last time I went to the mall with Zhou Yanze, I saw Sun Zhi pursuing Zhao Lan. What about you? How did you find out?"
Chen Qiao: "I saw them on a date. Zhao Lan had the look of someone deeply in love."
Lu Yun: "So it sounds like Sun Zhi won Zhao Lan over? How did he do it? She was actually willing to be with him again?"
Chen Qiao: "That I don't know. But Sun Zhi and Zhao Lan seem to be getting along really well."
Those two had fought so badly that they ended up divorced, and now they seemed to be getting along great?
Chen Qiao: "I was going to tell you and surprise you, but you already knew!"
Lu Yun made a special trip back to the compound for this. When she got there, before her father could even ask why she'd come alone, Lu Yun asked: "Sun Zhi and Zhao Lan are remarrying?"
Lu Yun's father: "They're remarrying?"
Her father didn't know, so Lu Yun shared the gossip with him. He was shocked too. That couple had fought so badly before, and now they were getting along great? He was genuinely curious how Sun Zhi had won Zhao Lan over.
A few days later, Sun Zhi and Zhao Lan handed out wedding candies at the compound, announcing they were remarrying. Everyone at the compound had complicated feelings, but they all smiled and offered congratulations, urging them to live well together this time.
It happened to be the weekend, and Lu Yun and Zhou Yanze were at the compound too. Lu Yun thought Zhao Lan and Sun Zhi wouldn't give them candies, but they actually came to the Lu family's door and gave them a lot.
Zhao Lan: "I never thought I'd remarry, but life is truly strange."
Zhao Lan seemed much more composed now, not like before when her eyes were full of scheming. She said to Lu Yun: "I made a lot of a fool of myself before. Please be forgiving, and let me apologize to you again. After all, we'll be from the same compound from now on."
Sun Zhi: "Don't worry, I definitely won't have any improper ideas in the future!"
Lu Yun asked curiously: "How did Sun Zhi win you over?"
Seeing that Lu Yun had no other intentions and was purely curious, Zhao Lan was willing to tell her.
Zhao Lan: "After the divorce, I found a job. Sun Zhi gave me child support every month, and my father-in-law also gave me some. My life wasn't too hard. I considered remarrying, but I wasn't too willing. Every man who weighs pros and cons—I just couldn't tolerate it. I figured my life was getting by fine, and things were going well, so I didn't plan to remarry. I just really didn't want to get into a relationship."
Lu Yun: "Then Sun Zhi pursued you on his own?"
Zhao Lan: "How did you know?"
Lu Yun: "I ran into you two at the mall."
Zhao Lan smiled and continued: "Yes, after that Sun Zhi pursued me on his own. I thought he'd lost his mind! I rejected him many times, but I could also feel his sincerity. One day it was raining, and he came to wait for me after work, holding an umbrella while completely soaked. At that moment, my heart moved a little. I thought, for the child's sake too, I'd give it a try with him. We started dating, like being in love—not that feeling of a calculated arranged marriage."
Sun Zhi: "I proposed to her, and she said yes."
Lu Yun: "What about you?"
Sun Zhi: "When she's not calculating, she's got a great personality, and I really like her. At first, it was for the kid, but over time it became real. I often think that if we hadn't been so calculating when we first met, maybe things wouldn't have turned out the way they did. But there's nothing we can do about it now—being together again is already pretty good."
After Lu Yun and Zhou Yanze returned home, Lu Yun remarked, "Thank goodness you came to apologize to me for your nephew. I don't like your nephew, but he did one good thing after all."
That's how they met and got together. Otherwise, even if they'd crossed paths, Zhou Yanze might not have pursued Lu Yun afterward.
Zhou Yanze: "It has nothing to do with him."
Lu Yun: "Why doesn't it have anything to do with your nephew?"
Zhou Yanze: "I had seen you before that. Why do you think I helped him apologize? Haven't you ever thought about that?"
Lu Yun suddenly understood. Zhou Yanze was right—given his relationship with the Zhou family, why would he go out of his way to apologize to her on his nephew's behalf?
Zhou Yanze: "Even if it weren't for that blind date, we would still have gotten together, gotten married, become husband and wife, and grown old together, happy and in love."
Lu Yun was amused and said, "Since that's the case, can you tell me when you first saw me?"
