Chapter 442
by 乔喵喵Chapter 442
"Yes, Dad, just eat with us. Since I was driven out by my elder brother's family, the times we, father and son, have eaten together have been few," He Youde also looked sad, knowing perfectly well that he couldn't let Dad grow distant from them.
His elder brother probably doesn't care much for him now, but his elder brother wouldn't be so heartless to Dad.
As long as Dad is around, he can help plead his case with his elder brother, and once Wang Qinghe leaves, Dad will still need to speak up for him, to get He Tian back sooner.
And in the future, when He Tian competes with those children of his elder brother's family, Dad can also help.
He now fully understands that no matter how his elder brother usually treats He Tian, it's still not as good as his own child!
It's really too self-centered.
He Quan, seeing his son and grandson both urging him to stay, was overjoyed.
His younger son is still very dutiful. If it weren't for the elder brother causing a scene to bring back their eldest son, the family could still be peaceful, how nice would that be?
"Alright, Dad will stay for dinner then."
In the kitchen, He Youde's wife silently cooked, her thoughts on her daughter who had already married.
Huihui, I wonder if she has settled down over there; if she has, she could also help the family.
Recently, the family has been struggling...
The dinner was simple, but since He Quan was staying, He Youde's wife made an extra meat dish.
Usually, when it's just her and He Youde at home, they don't have meat. They only fry eggs for He Tian, while they eat vegetables themselves.
She felt a bit sorry for the good food at home, so her cooking speed slowed down considerably.
It took a while before dinner was ready.
Just as the food was being served, there was a series of urgent knocks at the door.
"Who is it?" He Youde was not pleased; who comes at mealtime?
How inconsiderate!
Now that food is scarce, should we give them some?
"I'll go see," He Youde's wife said, putting down the bowl she had just picked up and turning to go out.
Opening the door, she was surprised to see who was standing there: "Huihui? And Ji Feng? What are you two doing back?"
"Huihui is back?" He Youde's ears were sharp; hearing his daughter had returned, he quickly called out: "Quick, let her come in. I heard from Ji Feng's grandmother that these two had gone back to the countryside?"
He Huihui entered the house, with Ji Feng looking awkward beside her.
Both looked a bit disheveled and out of sorts.
The family was stunned: "What happened to you two?"
"Don't mention it, Ji Feng and I were going to his hometown, originally planning to return after three days. But on the way, Ji Feng lost his money, and we had no money, so we had to come back.
But if we go home like this, Ji Feng's grandmother will be angry.
So... we thought about it and decided to come back home."
"Dad, Ji Feng and I will have to stay at home for the next few days."
He Huihui mentioned this, her eyes betraying a hint of guilt. She was afraid of being noticed, so she lowered her head.
Ji Feng, standing next to her, felt frustrated: "Father-in-law, Mother-in-law, we're causing you trouble."
"What trouble, kid? Just stay here, call us Mom and Dad. 'Father-in-law, Mother-in-law' sounds too formal. Mom, hurry up and grab some extra bowls and chopsticks for the kids." He Youde was keen on squeezing some money out of his daughter.
Of course, he wouldn't drive them away now.
Even though they were broke now, after staying for three days, wouldn't they have money again once they got back home?
He Tian frowned: "Dad, although staying at home is fine, do we have enough space here? Otherwise, I can go stay somewhere else."
He could crash at a guesthouse for a few days; he really couldn't stand being at home!
Everything was so outdated, and he couldn't figure out where all his dad's money had gone over the years.
His grandfather wasn't tight with money, even though he and Huihui hadn't been working long and hadn't pitched in much for the family.
But how come his dad hadn't saved a dime over the years?
The house was a dump, and the furniture was ancient.
He Tian was annoyed. If He Youde knew, he'd be quietly fretting.
Years back, to get Wang Shoucheng to kidnap Wang Qinghe, he'd shelled out a fortune. Even though his elder brother had raised the two kids, didn't he still have to provide for his wife? Every now and then, he also had to slip some cash to the kids.
On top of that, the Old Wang’s had recently demanded jobs, and getting the whole family employed had cost a bundle!
How could he possibly have any money left?
But He Tian didn't press, and He Youde didn't volunteer.
He Youde's heart ached when he heard his son wanted to stay at a guesthouse: "There's room here, why stay at a guesthouse? You're not hitched yet, won't you need cash for a wife down the road?
Our family's strapped for cash, you'll have to fend for yourself."
He Tian's frown deepened.
Why does Dad have to spill everything?
It's so humiliating!
He Youde didn't care; he had to play the poverty card first, to make sure his daughter and son-in-law got the message. His son still needed cash, and these two better not act clueless.
Ji Feng was busy eating and tuned out He Youde's words.
He was wiped out from the day and just wanted to chow down and crash.
The He family was just a pit stop.
Although Ji Feng was carefree, He Huihui took it to heart.
Her meal tasted off; what was Dad getting at? She'd just tied the knot, and he was already angling for her money? He didn't even ask how she was doing at Ji Feng's house when she came in?
He didn't ask why she and Ji Feng had to go to their hometown out of the blue?
He didn't even worry if she had been bullied at Ji Feng's house yesterday?
They don’t care about anything except money!
As a daughter, she doesn’t matter at all.
"Tonight, I’ll crash at your aunt’s place. Ji Feng can bunk with He Tian, and you and your mom can share a room." He Youde wouldn’t let his son leave the house.
He Tian had no choice but to go along with it.
He still needs the family’s support and can’t risk pissing off his dad and grandpa.
Ji Feng wasn’t thrilled about bunking with He Tian: "I’m not used to sharing a room with others..."
"Who told you to lose the cash? Suck it up." He Huihui said coldly.
He Huihui used to be so sweet, but who knew she’d turn into this after tying the knot.
Today, He Huihui got into it with him a few times over going back to the village.
He didn’t want to go back to the village either, but what could he do? If it weren’t for marrying He Huihui, would his grandma even care and make them go back for a few days?
He got the short end of the stick because of He Huihui, and she didn’t even care.
She didn’t even think about where she’d be if he hadn’t married her.
He Huihui is really good at reading people. She’d been bottling up a lot of anger these past couple of days, so she’d been giving Ji Feng the cold shoulder.
She figured since they were married, he’d cut her some slack.
But then she caught Ji Feng’s weird look, and her heart dropped.
No, she couldn’t let her feelings show too much.
Ji Feng might still be hung up on He Wei! What if he started comparing her to He Wei?
