Chapter 59: This Payday Was Insane

The scorching sun beat down on the entire Qingcheng city, yet over the old district, dark clouds suddenly gathered a minute prior, swirling ominously in the sky like a storm about to erupt.

Then, with a deafening roar, thousands of lightning bolts cracked down, like wild beasts unleashed, howling and raging before descending in a merciless barrage. Purple thunder ravaged the earth, obliterating everything—monsters wailed and perished, while disease-carrying mosquitoes were reduced to ashes.

The people of Qingcheng couldn’t help but gawk toward the spectacle, their faces pale, eyes bulging in terror. Was this the sign the world was ending?

Even the members of the Special Operations Bureau, who had sped several miles away and now stood by the roadside watching, were stunned. Their expressions were frozen, tinged with a flicker of fear. Had they delayed their departure by even a minute, they too would have been reduced to blackened corpses like the werewolves still trapped in the lightning zone.

    *Hiss—*

They could almost smell the damn tempting aroma of roasted meat.

Amid the thunderous cacophony, faint rumbles of hungry stomachs could be heard.

Zhao Xu’s ears reddened as he instinctively rubbed his rumbling stomach, forcing his expression into a blank face.

Just then, Lin Xiaobao approached, his tone grave. "Captain Zhao, we need to prepare for battle. Some of the werewolves from the edge of the lightning zone have escaped."

Relieved that Xiaobao hadn’t mentioned his stomach’s betrayal, Zhao Xu straightened up and barked, "All squads, dismount and prepare for combat!"

"Yes, sir!" A few ex-military members responded crisply, falling into formation smoothly.

New recruits like Lin Dabao and his brothers, fresh from civilian life, copied them, grabbing guns and weapons as they swiftly assembled.

While they fought valiantly, shedding blood and sweat, Hua Diao leisurely strolled out from her island dimension at the heart of the lightning storm.

The devastating thunderstorm had lasted only three seconds—brief, but devastating.

The surroundings were a scorched wasteland. Even the patch of weeds that had once towered over her now looked as if they’d been plowed over, the ground cratered like the moon.

But her attention was wholly captured by the glowing golden treasure chests floating all around her. Everywhere she looked, chests shimmered invitingly.

Her eyes sparkled with glee as she hit "Collect All."

Instantly, every treasure chest within a five-kilometer radius flew toward her.

By evening, the sky blazed with crimson hues, countless golden specks twinkling like floating lanterns. Hua Diao stood at the center, bathed in divine radiance, her dirt-smudged face lit up like a saint’s.

Brother Tiger and his two goons, crawling out of their earthen shelter, were met with this awe-inspiring sight.

    Awe-struck, they exchanged nervous glances.

Earlier, fearing pursuit by the Bao brothers, they had fled through a dog hole, only to run into a pack of werewolves. Terrified, they had scrambled back to the abandoned park—only to find it swarming with drooling werewolves.

In desperation, they had used their one-time-use "Earth Barrier" scroll to hide, shaking like leaves for three minutes before emerging, ready to fight for their lives.

Instead, they witnessed this insane scene.

The hundreds of werewolves that had surrounded them were gone, replaced by floating treasure chests. The woman at the center, hidden in the golden light, had clearly annihilated them all in mere minutes.

Though the scene was breathtakingly beautiful, the trio knew better than to test their luck.

With silent agreement, they sneaked back toward the dog hole, eager to escape before she noticed them.

Fortunately, the ancient city wall, though aged, had withstood the thunderstorm’s fury. The hole remained intact, and they scrambled through like roaches scattering.

Hua Diao, too engrossed in her windfall, didn’t notice the three losers sneaking away.

After stashing all the chests in her island dimension for later, she cheerfully headed toward the agreed meeting point at Lakeside Avenue.

    Meanwhile, in a nearby alley...

The gung-ho Bao brothers, who had been fighting at the forefront, still found time to whisper among themselves.

"Xiao Bao," Dabao murmured, "do you think the girl’s alright? That lightning storm was terrifying—like the sky was falling. She’s just a kid. Wasn’t she scared?"

Lin Xiaobao shot his brother a dry look. "Not everyone’s like you, clinging to Mom at the first clap of thunder."

Dabao’s face flushed. "That was ages ago! I’m not scared anymore! Can’t you stop bringing it up?"

Er Bao and San Bao snickered. "Big Bro, Xiao Bao’s not wrong. You don’t crawl into Mom’s bed anymore—you just crush us in ours. Remember when you broke our bunk?"

Dabao turned away, sulking. These brats were impossible.

"Hey—" He suddenly blinked, rubbing his eyes. "Am I hallucinating? There’s a pale hand waving at us from behind that wall. Is it luring us over? Some new monster?"

    The other three tensed.

But when Xiaobao recognized the hand, he sighed and shot Dabao a pitying look. "You really are a few fries short of a Happy Meal. Tell Mom to cook you some pig brains when we get back."

With that, he slung his rifle and walked toward the corner.

    Dabao looked baffled.

Er Bao and San Bao, they scowled, jealous, "We want pig brains too..."

After finishing off the last werewolf, they hurried after Xiaobao, hoping to beg for a bite.

But as they rounded the corner, they gaped.

There stood the very person they’d been worrying about.

Er Bao and San Bao’s eyes lit up. "Girl! How’d you get here?" they exclaimed, grinning like idiots.
