Chapter 84 The Reputation of a Sucker
byChapter 84: The Reputation of a Sucker
"Wait." Hua Diao called out hesitantly, her eyes darting to his wounds. She made a vague gesture with her hand. "There's… a bit of a problem. Aren't you going to treat those injuries?"
How could someone be so reckless? The gaping wounds were still bleeding profusely, yet he was ready to leave. Even an old workhorse wouldn't be this eager. Wasn't he afraid of bleeding to death halfway?
Zhao Xu glanced down at himself and chuckled dismissively. "No need. Just minor scratches. Lin Mohan can heal me later."
"But escorting you is indeed an important mission. I need to stay at my peak condition."
As he spoke, he pulled a bottle of green potion from his pocket. His tough-guy face contorted with visible heartache as he tilted his head back and downed it in one gulp. Afterward, he smacked his lips, as if savoring the potion's taste.
Hua Diao: "......"
No need to be so dramatic.
While Zhao Xu messaged his team to gather, Hua Diao took out the approval slip Xiao Li had given her and handed it to him. She explained her hope that he could also take on the task of clearing out the Wen Tian Supermarket near the research institute along the way.
Zhao Xu and Qiu Guangliang, who had just arrived, both stared at her in surprise—their expressions identical to Xiao Li’s earlier, as if thinking, *So you’re that sucker’s granddaughter.*
Hua Diao’s lips twitched in displeasure.
Had her reputation as a sucker already spread throughout the Special Operations Bureau?
Annoyed, she ignored Lin Mohan, who approached her with a gentle, overly warm smile, successfully making the fake smile on Lin Mohan’s face freeze for a split second.
"What are you standing there for? Hurry up and heal the captain!" The last team member, Ji Miao, strode over briskly in her trench coat, frowning at Lin Mohan with clear annoyance.
With that, all four members of Zhao Xu’s third squad had assembled.
Lin Mohan’s heart twisted with resentment, but she forced a pitiful, faint smile onto her face. "Sister Ji Miao, I’ll be right there."
She hurried over, produced her staff, and with a wave, white light shimmered from the staff’s tip. Tiny motes of light drifted into Zhao Xu’s wounds.
Hua Diao watched closely. Through the torn fabric, she could clearly see the bleeding wounds gradually stop under the white light, then begin to scab over.
Once the scabbing was complete, Lin Mohan stopped the healing and moved to the next larger wound. She repeated the process until all injuries were treated before finally lowering her staff.
Hua Diao found it fascinating. This healing magic was quite incredible—she’d definitely need to get her hands on related items. Future battles wouldn’t be as smooth as the past few days, and injuries were inevitable. Healing tools were a must.
By now, Lin Mohan’s face had lost all color, her lips and skin pale. She offered Ji Miao a weak smile. "The captain’s wounds are healed now, Sister Ji Miao. No need to worry. I heard you’re being transferred to lead a new squad? When are you leaving?"
"What I mean is, I’ll take good care of the captain from now on. You can go with peace of mind."
*Wow, what a classic green tea mistress speech!*
Hua Diao’s eyes widened as she quietly enjoyed the show. The subtext was obvious—*Step aside, 'first wife'. I’ll take over your man and promise to take good care of him.*
Lin Mohan really couldn’t help but play the delicate, manipulative green tea role wherever she went.
Ji Miao’s bright, confident expression darkened. She hadn’t interacted much with Lin Mohan before and had initially been quite protective of this seemingly fragile younger girl. But after these past two days, she wasn’t stupid—she’d seen through Lin Mohan’s true nature.
The girl fawned over any remotely capable man, sweet-talking her way into their good graces, while treating all women with instinctive hostility. She loved showing off, making comparisons, and spouting green tea phrases to elevate herself while putting other women down.
Ji Miao, being in the same squad, had borne the brunt of it.
The kicker? Zhao Xu, that clueless blockhead, was completely oblivious—less perceptive than even Qiu Guangliang.
But ignorance had its perks. Zhao Xu didn’t pick up on Lin Mohan’s implications and didn't give her a second thought, his attention still locked on Ji Miao.
Hearing Lin Mohan’s words, he immediately turned to Ji Miao, his expression anxious. "You’re really transferring?"
He’d been planning to pop the question soon—how could she leave at this critical moment?
*Guess I’ll have to make my move fast.*
Ji Miao’s expression softened slightly. "Director Zhang suggested it. I haven’t agreed yet. Let’s see how things go in a couple of days. If the new recruits can’t handle it, I might be temporarily reassigned."
Zhao Xu: "......"
*Well, shit. Director Zhang’s involved?* He’d thought the man was playing cupid, but turns out he was secretly meddling, becoming the stick that beat apart the lovebirds.
...*So frustrating!*
The usually upright Zhao Xu looked utterly dejected.
Ji Miao laughed and ruffled his hair. "Relax, nothing’s decided yet. We’ll see if the newbies can manage first."
Zhao Xu nodded, narrowing his eyes as he plotted. *Maybe I should hold a training session for the recruits. If they get their act together, my wife won’t have to be reassigned, right?*
Hua Diao silently devoured this dog food, feeling stuffed.
In contrast, Lin Mohan’s already pale face turned even uglier. Her smile twitched slightly as she watched Zhao Xu and Ji Miao, her eyes darkening before she spoke up with fake sweetness. "Captain, weren’t we supposed to be on a mission? Hua Diao’s been waiting so long. Let’s not waste her time."
Hua Diao put on an innocent face and shook her head at the affectionate couple. "I’m not in a hurry. Not at all. Please, continue."
*A live-action couple’s daily life?* She was eating this up!
Back when her bad luck was rampant, couples would steer clear of her, terrified she’d taint their romance with misfortune. She’d never gotten to experience the cloying sweetness of love firsthand—this was all fresh and exciting!
Ji Miao quirked a smile, ignoring Lin Mohan’s antics, but her attitude toward Hua Diao remained friendly.
"Alright, we really shouldn’t delay any longer. The new squads are holding down the fort at the Bureau’s entrance. Let’s make it snappy."
Zhao Xu, ever the dutiful partner, nodded quickly. "Right, right. In and out fast. We still have to clear out Wen Tian Supermarket later. Qiu Guangliang, go put in for a military truck and arrange some new recruits to help with the haul."
Qiu Guangliang, still enjoying seeing his ship sail, came back to reality. "Got it, Captain!"
