    Chapter 16: Am I Pregnant?

Yu Wei's eyes were red and puffy from crying, still glistening. Shi Ciyan wiped the tears from the corners of his eyes with his fingertip and said softly, "You don't need to say that to me. Get some good sleep, and I'll go tidy up the living room."

Shi Ciyan tucked him in and tiptoed out of the bedroom. Exhausted from what happened that afternoon, Yu Wei closed his eyes and soon fell into a deep sleep. When he woke up in the evening, Shi Ciyan was still there, and he had set out another full table of dishes. Yu Wei had been lying in bed all afternoon and wasn't very hungry, so he ended up drinking a small bowl of black chicken soup.

"Is it good?" Shi Ciyan sat across from him, watching him eagerly.

"It's pretty good. Are you going back soon?"

Shi Ciyan hesitated for a few seconds, looking at Yu Wei's thin face. "Brother, do you need someone to cook and clean?"

Yu Wei coughed, nearly choking. "What do you mean?"

"I can cook, clean, and do laundry. I finally found a part-time job at a bar last month, but it shut down. Now I don't know where else to look."

Yu Wei didn't need a housekeeper, but seeing how pitiful Shi Ciyan looked, he couldn't bring himself to refuse. However, he really didn't need Shi Ciyan as a housekeeper.

Hiring the protagonist as a housekeeper? Was he asking for trouble?

"Your place is too far from my office, it's not convenient. Besides, I'm at the office all day and usually eat out."

"I really can't find a job." Shi Ciyan lowered his eyes, his voice gloomy and pitiful. "Then do you need an assistant? I can do anything you need."

    Yu Wei: "..."

He already had seven or eight assistants, so he really didn't need another. And Nanjing University wasn't particularly close to the company either.

But if Shi Ciyan really couldn't find a job, having him as an assistant might not be bad—better than having him as a housekeeper. One more assistant wouldn't be a problem.

"Then come be my assistant. You'll work as an intern, three days a week, with a monthly salary of 4,500."

Shi Ciyan's eyes lit up with excitement. "Okay, I'll start tomorrow."

Yu Wei asked him to come in three days a week, but Shi Ciyan would rush to the company whenever he didn't have class, working very diligently. He was full of energy every day, running into Yu Wei's office ten times an hour, while Yu Wei himself felt tired just from reading documents for ten minutes, his eyes blurry.

Yu Wei rubbed his temples and called for an assistant to bring him coffee.

"Xiao Yu, brew me a cup of coffee, and make sure Shi Ciyan doesn't see." Ever since Shi Ciyan started working, Yu Wei's coffee freedom had been taken away.

Yu Wei waited ten minutes, and the office door was pushed open. "Shi Ciyan didn't see... Why are you coming in?" Yu Wei glared at Shi Ciyan, who walked in carrying a glass of milk. "Didn't I call Xiao Yu?"

"Xiao Yu had something to do." Shi Ciyan placed the milk beside him. "It's just the right temperature."

Yu Wei pouted, picked up the milk, and drank it all. He still wanted coffee to wake himself up.

"Didn't you sleep well last night?" Shi Ciyan walked behind him and silently started massaging his shoulders. "If you're tired from reading documents, take a break."

Shi Ciyan's massage technique was gentle, and Yu Wei squinted his eyes in comfort. His insomnia had improved a bit a while ago, but recently it had gotten worse, even more severe. Before, he could take melatonin and barely fall asleep, but now melatonin didn't work, and he just had to tough it out.

"You've lost even more weight. How about going to the hospital? I'll go with you."

Yu Wei had no appetite and was getting thinner. This wasn't the first time Shi Ciyan had suggested going to the hospital, but Yu Wei didn't take it seriously, thinking it was just a psychological reaction to what Lin Zerui had done, causing insomnia and lack of appetite, which would pass with time.

Shi Ciyan massaged him for a while, and then his secretary came in to say that Lin Hao was there to see him and was already waiting in the meeting room.

The cooperation between the Lin family and the Yu family would have been finalized long ago if not for all those troubles. But what Lin Zerui had tried to do to him that day was still a thorn in Yu Wei's heart. He couldn't even stand the sight of Lin Hao now, and he didn't want to cooperate with the Lin family anymore.

He had talked to his father about it, and to his surprise, his father also didn't want to cooperate with the Lin family. He had only agreed before because Yu Wei liked Lin Zerui.

Fortunately, the contract hadn't been signed yet, so Yu Wei immediately contacted Lin Hao to call off the cooperation. Lin Hao had probably come today about that.

"Alright, stop. I'll go see him." Yu Wei opened his eyes and patted Shi Ciyan's hand, stood up, and straightened his clothes. "Go about your business."

Shi Ciyan said, "Don't sneak any coffee."

Yu Wei glared at him. "I'm your boss."

Shi Ciyan immediately changed his tone, "Boss, please don't sneak coffee. It's bad for your health."

    Yu Wei: "..."

Yu Wei snorted and strode out of the office to the meeting room. In the meeting room were Lin Hao and his assistant. Surprisingly, Lin Hao hadn't brought Lin Zerui to play the sympathy card—that was rare.

As soon as he entered, Lin Hao stood up. "Xiao Wei, you've lost a lot of weight."

Yu Wei rolled his eyes secretly. "President Lin, don't be so informal."

Although the engagement between the Yu and Lin families still stood, Yu Wei didn't want to be polite anymore. As soon as he found a reasonable excuse, he would break off the engagement. But the reason had to paint him as the victim and Lin Zerui as the wrongdoer, so that breaking off the engagement wouldn't affect the company's development.

Lin Zerui had been fooling around before, and Yu Wei knew about it but hadn't kept any evidence. A while ago, he had sent someone to tail Lin Zerui for evidence, but Lin Zerui had either been in the hospital or hiding at home, not going out, so he had wasted half a month without getting anything.

As long as he could get a few photos of him fooling around, he would have a reason to break off the engagement without affecting the company's stock.

"Xiao Wei, I heard from Zerui that you two had a little conflict. I've already scolded him, and he won't do it again. Don't let this affect our cooperation. You'll become part of our family eventually."

"Cancelling the cooperation isn't out of spite." Yu Wei sat down, unbuttoned his jacket, and said casually, "This cooperation needs to start over from scratch, beginning with an evaluation of your company."

Many pharmacies on the market wanted to cooperate with them. Before he transmigrated, the cooperation had already reached the contract-signing stage, so Yu Wei had taken over from the draft contract stage. But now, putting all personal issues aside, the Lin family was just one option. Compared to other pharmacies, the Lin family was more well-known and was the Yu family's best choice.

Putting aside personal grudges, Yu Wei still considered the Lin family first. But since he had taken over mid-stream and didn't know the Lin family company's development, he wanted the cooperation to start over.

Lin Hao smiled awkwardly. "Xiao Wei, we're so close. Can't you trust me?"

Yu Wei smiled without saying a word, making his meaning clear.

After seeing Lin Hao out, Yu Wei immediately returned to his office and asked his secretary to bring him the Lin family's pharmacy's annual report. From their conversation, Lin Hao had clearly panicked, and Yu Wei felt something was off.

Yu Wei looked through it twice. Apart from the slightly high balance of accounts payable, there were no suspicious points. Yu Wei wanted to look again, but suddenly his stomach contracted violently, as if an invisible hand was gripping it tightly. He immediately ran to the bathroom, knelt by the toilet, and threw up all the milk he had drunk an hour ago.

When Shi Ciyan came to find Yu Wei, the bathroom door was wide open, and sounds of vomiting came from inside. Shi Ciyan frowned slightly, put down the freshly cut fruit he was holding, and walked in.

Yu Wei was kneeling on the floor, vomiting violently, and hadn't even noticed anyone entering. Shi Ciyan grabbed a bottle of water, walked over, and gently patted his back.

After he finished vomiting, Yu Wei was a bit weak. Shi Ciyan caught his frail body, helped him rinse his mouth, and stood him up. "Brother Yuwei, let me carry you over."

Yu Wei's face was deathly pale. Shi Ciyan lifted him up and placed him on the bed in the lounge. He went to the bathroom, soaked a towel in hot water, and wiped the sweat from Yu Wei's face and neck.

"Brother Yuwei, let's go to the hospital. I'll go with you."

Yu Wei closed his eyes and lay there for a while. When he regained some strength, he said, "Okay, I'll go this weekend."

Shi Ciyan didn't say anything more, but his gaze fell on Yu Wei's lower abdomen. If it had happened that time, it would be 11 weeks now. It wasn't visible through his clothes.

Yu Wei still couldn't eat anything in the evening. On weekdays, Yu Wei was very busy, but his stomach issues kept getting worse. Shi Ciyan often reminded him to go to the hospital. Anyway, it was better to go on Saturday to check.

That evening after work, Yu Wei dragged his tired body home. After lying on the sofa for a while, he got up to take a shower. He took off his shirt, and in the mirror, his bones were visible because he was so thin, but...

Yu Wei touched his lower abdomen and felt something was off.

In the past two months, he'd barely touched food, so he dropped weight fast, losing what little muscle he had and leaving him just skin and bones. But weirdly, his stomach—which was flat just two weeks ago—was now a little swollen. Although the bulge wasn't large, given how thin he was, having a belly seemed strange.

Yu Wei turned sideways, and the protrusion on his abdomen became even more noticeable.

Beer belly from sitting at a desk all day?

He hadn't hit the gym lately, but that shouldn't give him a beer belly, right?

    Or was it a tumor?

With all the vomiting, insomnia, an upset stomach, and now a bloated belly—was it a tumor?

The thought made Yu Wei uneasy. At first, he thought Lin Zerui was just grossing him out, but as it got worse, he figured it was a stomach problem and tried calming it with bland food and hot water. He even cut out coffee and stuck to hot water or milk.

Now, seeing his bony frame with only a belly sticking out, he couldn't help but get worried.

He barely slept that night, and as soon as dawn broke the next day, Yu Wei dressed and headed straight to the hospital.

    He couldn't wait until Saturday.

At the city central hospital, he booked a full physical examination, signing up for every possible test.

That whole process took up Yu Wei's whole morning. Except for some specialized tests that required waiting over three days, most results would be available by two in the afternoon. Yu Wei didn't go back to the office at lunch. He grabbed a place near the hospital, took a couple of bites, then hit the bathroom to puke it all up. Whether it was all in his head or not, he felt like something was inside him.

At two in the afternoon, Yu Wei went to the front desk to inquire. The nurse told him that the physical exam report could be collected in paper form from the general office at the end of the hall on the second floor, or viewed electronically on the app.

Yu Wei waited over half an hour. Since he didn't know what the numbers on the app meant, he headed to the second floor to get the printed report and ask a doctor face-to-face.

There was a long line on the second floor, and Yu Wei stood at the end. The line moved fast—most people grabbed their report, saw they were fine, and left in no time.

Ten minutes later, the woman in front of Yu Wei went in. Yu Wei stood at the door, nervous, his heart racing.

    "Next."

The office door opened from the inside, and after the woman in front of them walked out, a voice came from within.

Yu Wei entered, gave his ID number, and the doctor entered it into the system, found the report, and printed it out. The doctor glanced at it casually without even looking up. "Underweight, slightly malnourished."

"I've had a poor appetite lately, can't eat much, and when I do, I throw it up."

The doctor's expression was flat, as if he had seen it all before. "That's normal. Everyone goes through it at first."

Yu Wei was a bit confused. Was losing your appetite for that long normal?

"Doctor, is there really nothing wrong with my stomach? I have no appetite, I can't sleep, and my stomach..."

The doctor pushed up his glasses. "Nothing serious. You just have worse morning sickness than most. It'll let up after the first trimester."

"Pregnancy reaction?" Yu Wei frowned, his face full of disbelief.

The doctor finally looked up. "You didn't know you were pregnant?"

Yu Wei's mind went blank. "Who's pregnant?"

    The doctor: "You are."

Yu Wei: "What's wrong with me?"

The doctor said impatiently, "You're pregnant."

Yu Wei repeated it incredulously, pointing at himself. "I'm pregnant?"

The doctor: "Yes, you're pregnant. Based on the indicators, it's about two months. Go to the obstetrics and gynecology department for a more detailed check."

Yu Wei stared at the young doctor, incredulous. "Doc, my name's Yu Wei. I'm a guy. You sure you didn't grab the wrong report?"

"Nope, it's yours." He put the report in front of Yu Wei—name and gender matched.

"So you're telling me there's a baby in my stomach, not a tumor? And I'm puking from morning sickness, not a stomach problem?" Yu Wei checked his phone to make sure it wasn't April Fools' Day. "I'm a guy. Telling me I'm pregnant is less believable than saying I'm dying."

    The doctor: "..."

Seeing the doctor mute, Yu Wei felt more sure of himself. "If I'm really pregnant, then tell me how this kid got in there." How could a man get pregnant?

"Even if you use protection, nothing's a hundred percent."

Yu Wei stared at the doctor, who was around his age, saying stuff that made zero sense—his brain was trying to catch up.

Is the focus really on birth control right now?

Shouldn't the real question be how a guy can get pregnant? He doesn't have a uterus. How could he be some kind of freak and get knocked up in his stomach?

    How messed up is that!

Yu Wei couldn't keep his cool. "Dude, how'd you become a doctor? Did you even take biology? I'm a guy—I can't get pregnant, you get that?"

He was already fed up with work, and now he had to deal with a clueless doctor. The doctor jabbed a finger at the gender column—right under "Male" was a tiny line of English text. "Did you even take high school bio? You're an Omega—getting pregnant is totally normal. It's not like you're an Alpha or a Beta. Why're you making such a huge deal?"

Yu Wei shot him a glare, his neck stiffening. "What Omega, Alpha, Beta? My physics teacher never taught me that Greek letters could knock someone up. And why can Omega get pregnant but Alpha and Beta can't? Is that some kind of letter bias?"

The doctor was speechless. He couldn't tell if Yu Wei ever went to school. If he did, how could he not know Omegas have a reproductive tract and can get pregnant from sex? But if he didn't, he sure knew his physics symbols.

Finally, the doctor let out a deep sigh. "You skipped one test in your checkup. I'd suggest getting that looked into."

Yu Wei was taken aback. "What test?"

    "A brain scan."
