Chapter 52: Two Boyfriends with Broken Hearts

Mei Hexuan held the bouquet in his hands, outwardly calm but inwardly uneasy.

Ever since leaving the amusement park last time, he was haunted by thoughts of Yu Xing—how she had saved him there, how she had given him a precious opportunity, and her friends' accusations against him.

Try as he might to forget, his mind kept returning to her.

The more he remembered, the clearer it became, but the emotions tied to them faded. Looking back on what had happened at school, Mei Hexuan now felt he had overreacted, and could no longer recall how strongly he'd felt at the time.

The more he reflected, the more he realized how badly he had behaved, while Yu Xing had genuinely treated him well. For several nights after returning from the amusement park, he had dreams about her.

Every single time, the dreams replayed the same scene: surrounded by pollutants in the amusement park, Yu Xing appeared to rescue him.

His family doctor explained that this was due to the trauma from the shock he had experienced. His mind kept replaying the frightening event and the person who had made him feel safe.

The doctor had no real solution but suggested he see more of the person who gave him a sense of security.

So, Mei Hexuan remembered Yu Xing had invited him. He ordered a bouquet and even got a new suit made, intending to thank her properly that day.

Though he still found Yu Xing’s behavior a little strange—she seemed to believe they were in love—Mei Hexuan now thought that going out with her might be okay.

The only downside was being a defective person living in District D. But that wasn't a big deal. He had personally witnessed military generals and church clergy taking an interest in her. She was destined to become a successful Divine Chosen, perhaps even a high-ranking military officer in the future.

That would take care of the status difference, making them a well-matched pair…

Lost in thought, he was suddenly interrupted by a familiar voice. "Mei Hexuan, what are you doing here?"

Mei Hexuan looked up and saw Gu Ya.

His face immediately turned cold. "Why are you here?" he asked coldly.

Gu Ya took in Mei Hexuan’s unusually flashy attire. What's with the fancy clothes?

Mei Hexuan, in turn, noticed Gu Ya was also dressed formally. A horrible thought occurred to him—had Yu Xing invited Gu Ya as well?

He couldn't understand why Yu Xing would associate with Gu Ya, much less be involved in so many rumors with him. Gu Ya was nothing but a loser, someone even his family’s resources couldn’t elevate.

"I…" Gu Ya hesitated, avoiding the real answer. "Oh, I came with my father."

Mei Hexuan glanced around and spotted Gu Ya’s father nearby.

"Are you here alone?" Gu Ya scanned the surroundings before it suddenly hit him. He stared at Mei Hexuan in disbelief. "Don’t tell me… Yu Xing invited you?"

He guessed this because he, too, had received an invitation from Yu Xing—though that's not why he came.

Gu Ya expected Mei Hexuan to get defensive, but instead, Mei Hexuan became suspicious. "How did you know? Did she invite you too?"

Gu Ya stiffened. Not wanting to admit the truth, he changed the subject, trying to get at Mei Hexuan differently. He pointed at the bouquet. "Is that… for Yu Xing?"

To him, this was a straight-up insult. Mei Hexuan was sure to lose it, and Gu Ya was ready to enjoy the spectacle.

Yet, instead of crumbling, Mei Hexuan’s face turned slightly red.

    Gu Ya: "…"

Now it was Gu Ya who was about to snap. What the hell was there to blush about?!

Just as Gu Ya was about to speak, he saw Mei Hexuan's face light up, as if spotting something.

Turning, he followed Mei Hexuan’s gaze and saw Yu Xing walking hand in hand with another girl toward them.

Gu Ya was stunned, looking at Mei Hexuan in shock. *No way, man. You’re seriously here to give Yu Xing flowers? This has me worried.*

Still reeling, he felt a tap on his shoulder. His father’s voice sounded in his ear. "Miss Miao is here. Come with me."

Gu Ya was dazed. He couldn’t wrap his head around Mei Hexuan bringing flowers for Yu Xing. It didn't add up—Mei Hexuan was always so arrogant and aloof. How could he lower himself like this?

As he followed his father, he noticed Mei Hexuan walking alongside them.

Gu Ya shot him a look. "Why are you following me?"

Mei Hexuan glanced at him before rolling his eyes, clearly uninterested in engaging.

Gu Ya felt a growing sense of dread. He turned forward and saw Yu Xing ahead—and they were heading straight for her.

Soon, both he and Mei Hexuan stopped in front of Yu Xing.

    Gu Ya: "…"

This time, Mei Hexuan seemed inexplicably nervous upon seeing Yu Xing. He presented the bouquet to her. "For you. I hope you like it."

    Gu Ya: "…"

*Moon God above!* Gu Ya wondered if he was still dreaming. Mei Hexuan actually brought flowers for Yu Xing.

Yu Xing gazed deeply at Mei Hexuan, took a slow breath, and said, "Come with me for a moment."

Then Mei Hexuan obediently followed her.

    Gu Ya: "…"

"Gu Ya, what are you spacing out for?" His father’s voice snapped him out of his stupor. "This is Miss Miao."

Gu Ya looked blankly at Miao Yuanjin before him.

    Wait—

Wasn’t this the girl who had been holding hands with Yu Xing earlier?

Miao Yuanjin observed the father and son before her, already guessing their purpose. Her expression remained composed as she greeted politely, "Uncle Gu, you’re here too."

"Yuan Jin, you’ve grown so much," Gu Muyao said warmly. "You’re capable enough to stand on your own now."

Miao Yuanjin was no stranger to Gu Muyao. She had often seen him accompanying her grandfather in her childhood. He had always been kind to her, though they had met less frequently as she grew older.

"I brought Gu Ya specifically to apologize to you," Gu Muyao said, giving his son a firm pat on the back. "Hurry up and say you’re sorry!"

Gu Ya stared at Miao Yuanjin, now utterly certain he had never met her before. His confusion deepened—how exactly had he offended this young lady?

But since his father demanded an apology, he had no choice.

"I’m sorry," Gu Ya bowed deeply. "However I’ve wronged you, please forgive me. I’ll never dare offend you again. I’ll run the other way if I see you—"

Gu Muyao frowned, about to scold him, but Miao Yuanjin spoke first with a graceful smile. "Uncle Gu, may I speak with Gu Ya alone?"

"Of course," Gu Muyao agreed without hesitation, his youthful face displaying a rare tenderness Gu Ya seldom saw.

Miao Yuanjin was a Divine Chosen—he had no concerns about his son bullying her. As for whether his son might be bullied… well, that wasn’t his concern.

After Gu Muyao left, Gu Ya immediately straightened up. Though trying hard to restrain himself, his gaze toward Miao Yuanjin still betrayed a hint of anger.

"How did Uncle Gu punish you?" Miao Yuanjin asked with a smile.

Gu Ya's expression turned icy. "Could Miss Miao clarify when, where, and in what manner I supposedly bullied you?"

Facing his bottled-up anger, Miao Yuanjin ignored his question and instead said, "You know the girl who was with me earlier, don’t you?"

    Gu Ya froze. "Yu Xing?"

"Yes." Miao Yuanjin locked eyes with him. "She told me you're her boyfriend."

Gu Ya snapped—again, because of Yu Xing! Ever since getting involved with her, misfortune had plagued him endlessly. He totally regretted ever going after Yu Xing because of Yun Dai, leaving him now in nonstop misery.

"That’s a lie!" Gu Ya could no longer contain his anger. "She’s just a commoner—there’s no way I’d date her!"

    *Slap!*

A sharp sound cut off Gu Ya’s words.

His head snapped to the side, shocked as he looked at Miao Yuanjin. Why had she hit him?

Miao Yuanjin pointed at his nose, her beautiful eyes burning with anger. "Who gave you the right to speak of Yu Xing like that? She’s a Divine Chosen, the Beloved of the God of Misfortune—way above your league!"

    Gu Ya: "..."

This is insane... totally nuts. Gu Ya felt the world had gone insane. Why was everyone siding with that nobody? Yun Dai, Mei Hexuan, even the young lady of the Miao family—what kind of spell had that wretch cast?

Struck and humiliated, Gu Ya was both shocked and wronged.

Still unsatisfied, Miao Yuanjin added, "So that’s how it is—you’ve been toying with Yu Xing’s feelings too."

For crying out loud, Gu Ya felt even more wronged. *Me, toying with her feelings? If anything, she’s the one messing with me!*

"Yu Xing is truly pitiable," Miao Yuanjin said with genuine indignation. "Just because of where she comes from, her honesty, her sincerity—people like you keep pushing her around!"

"..." Tears welled up in Gu Ya’s eyes. *Yu Xing—honest? Sincere? Me bullying her?*

"Don’t you dare mistreat Yu Xing ever again," Miao Yuanjin declared haughtily. "From now on, she’s under my protection. If I ever hear you’ve upset her again, I’ll make you regret being born!"

With that, she flipped her hair and strode away, leaving Gu Ya crushed.

Truly, he already regretted everything. If he’d known this would be his fate, he’d have rather never been born.

Were it not for the crowd around, Gu Ya would’ve burst into tears.

He regretted it so deeply. If time could reverse, he’d go back to that afternoon and beat the crap out of his past self—the one about to kidnap Yu Xing—half to death...

Yu Xing led Mei Hexuan to a quiet corner. He nervously held out the flowers again. "You have a match today—I wish you a win right off the bat..."

Before he could finish, Yu Xing interrupted, "Let’s not see each other anymore."

    "...What?" Mei Hexuan was stunned.

"I know what you did. Those four Divine Chosen who ambushed me—they were yours." Yu Xing was ending things for good.

At those words, Mei Hexuan’s heart dropped—*she knew!*
