Chapter 137 The Assassination of Grandpa, Yu Xing Wants to Contact Miss Miao…
byChapter 137: The Grandfather Assassination Plot
Yu Xing wanted to contact Young Miss Miao...
After a while, Jiang Hui finally grasped a crucial fact: the girl before him was both Yu Xing and not Yu Xing. More precisely, Yu Xing was inhabiting this girl's body, using it to evade pursuit and surveillance to reach him.
Though he couldn't fathom how Yu Xing had achieved this, it certainly clarified some of his lingering doubts.
For instance, during the great battle in Zone B, why had Yu Xing’s grandmother bravely fought the official Divine Chosen in the sky? And why had Yu Xing suddenly appeared? It was because Yu Xing had been controlling her grandmother’s body during that confrontation.
With these revelations, Jiang Hui couldn't help but pose a question, “Are you the Bull Warrior?”
Yu Xing gazed at Jiang Hui, and Jiang Hui returned her stare. After a long silence, Yu Xing nodded. “Yes, I am the Bull Warrior.”
Jiang Hui: “...”
Jiang Hui ran a hand through his hair, a sudden craving for a cigarette overwhelming him. He pulled out a pack from his pocket and selected one.
“Don’t smoke in front of a child,” Yu Xing said, frowning, then stood on tiptoe to snatch the cigarette from his hand.
Jiang Hui looked at the slender girl before him, finding the situation utterly preposterous.
Yu Xing tossed the cigarette aside and scanned the surroundings, spotting a nutrient solution on Jiang Hui’s desk. She walked over, opened it, and chugged it down in one gulp. The girl she was possessing had been starving, and Yu Xing herself had suffered from intense hunger during her time in the body.
After finishing the drink, Yu Xing turned back. “Now, about the ten thousand credits?”
“Oh.” Jiang Hui nodded, reaching for his terminal, when he suddenly paused. “Why should I give you money?”
Yu Xing frowned again, but before she could respond, Jiang Hui continued, “Why are you telling me so many secrets? Do you trust me that much? Aren’t you worried I’ll expose you?”
Yu Xing thought to herself, *Of course I’m not worried. You have no ties to the authorities, and you’re deeply in love with me.*
Who would betray the person they loved?
“I trust you,” Yu Xing stated without a moment’s hesitation.
Jiang Hui: “...”
Jiang Hui once again ran his hands through his hair, turning his neatly combed locks into a bird's nest. To be honest, he was flattered by Yu Xing’s unwavering trust—he didn’t even trust himself that much.
“You...” Jiang Hui looked at Yu Xing, then turned away. “The money is for this girl, right? She doesn’t have a terminal, does she? I’ll write her a check...”
“You’re so thoughtful,” Yu Xing praised without reservation. “I hadn’t even considered that.”
Jiang Hui signed a check and handed it to Yu Xing, who casually tucked it into the girl’s pocket. With that done, Jiang Hui finally collected himself. “Why did you come to me? Didn’t you escape the Seven Cities? Why come back? Do you know how much surveillance has increased since you left? Divine Chosen patrol the streets constantly now.”
“Really? No wonder there’s so much more surveillance in Zone D.” Yu Xing didn’t seem bothered. She answered Jiang Hui’s questions one by one. “I came back for something important. I came to you because my old terminal and account are unusable. I figured someone as well-connected as you could help me get a new one.”
Jiang Hui indeed had a way, and it wasn’t a difficult task for him.
He nodded. “It’ll take some time. Stay here for now—I’ll get it done as soon as possible.”
“Thank you so much.” Yu Xing thought Jiang Hui was truly a good person. “I won’t take your money for nothing. If you have any pollution source disposal tasks, you can assign them to me. You can take a bigger cut.”
Jiang Hui’s eyelid twitched. After witnessing Yu Xing single-handedly fight the entire Seven Cities and severely injure a Level 6 Divine Chosen, Jiang Hui wouldn’t dare try to swindle her again.
“Heh, you’re kidding.” But he did have one task in mind—one that others would struggle with, but Yu Xing might just pull off.
Jiang Hui said, “I do have one job. The reward is exceptionally high, far beyond any other. But it’s also very difficult. Still, I think you might be able to do it.”
“Oh?” Yu Xing was intrigued. Her old account was frozen, along with all her money, leaving her broke again. She desperately needed cash.
“What kind of job?” she asked.
“Assassinating someone,” Jiang Hui turned around. “A living person.”
“A living person?” The reward for killing a living person was this high? Yu Xing was stunned. “Don’t tell me it’s the Federal Chief Executive?”
“...No.” Jiang Hui thought she was overthinking it. He said gravely, “But the difficulty isn’t much lower. The target is the chairman of Eternal Entertainment—Chairman Miao Pengwei.”
Yu Xing’s eyes widened. Miao Yuanjin’s grandfather again?
“Who?” Yu Xing was curious. “Who posted this job?”
Jiang Hui, while messaging on his terminal to arrange a fake account, replied, “In my business, we don’t disclose client information. And there are plenty of people who want Miao Pengwei dead. This isn’t the only job of its kind—many of my peers have received similar requests.”
“Why?” Yu Xing didn’t understand. Miao Yuanjin had always praised her grandfather. “Why do so many people want to kill Miao... Pengwei?”
Jiang Hui paused, thinking. “Honestly, I’m not sure. From what I’ve heard, it’s because of the game.”
*Perfect World?* Yu Xing recalled seeing an ad for it at the bus stop on the day she first arrived. Later, Miao Yuanjin had gifted her a copy, boasting it was their company’s latest release—incredibly fun.
Yu Xing had never played it. It was still sitting in her storage ring.
“You’ve probably seen the ads for *Perfect World*,” Jiang Hui said. “It’s a full-dive VR game Eternal Entertainment spent twenty years developing. Before its release, the company was extremely confident. When it launched, the price was surprisingly low, and the entire Federation went wild for it.
But soon, incidents started occurring. People died suddenly while playing. You know how many gamers there are—gaming-related deaths aren’t uncommon, so no one made much of it at first. But then more and more players began dying, some without even being particularly addicted or exhausted. The cause of death remained undetermined by autopsies.”
Yu Xing was shocked. It sounded like the game really was dangerous.
But Miao Yuanjin played it too. If the game was truly hazardous, would Eternal Entertainment let the Miao family’s heiress take such a risk?
“The scandal caused a huge uproar. Even the Federal Government intervened,” Jiang Hui shrugged. “But Eternal Entertainment maintained the game was perfect, denying any connection to the deaths. They continued sales despite the backlash. Society divided into two camps.
One group was addicted, refusing to stop even at the cost of their lives. The other fiercely opposed the game, protesting both online and in person, defacing advertisements, attacking Eternal Entertainment stores, and even assaulting players.”
Yu Xing found it hard to believe a game could cause such chaos.
“Is the game really that good?” she couldn’t help asking.
“Not sure. I’ve never played—I wouldn’t dare.” Jiang Hui chuckled. “But I know someone who does. According to him, the game is... strange.”
“How so?” Yu Xing sat backwards on a chair, resting her arms on the backrest. “Is it a horror game?”
“No, not at all.” Jiang Hui bent down, opened a metal cabinet, and pulled out a large box—the *Perfect World* game.
The packaging was simple, featuring blue skies, white clouds, green mountains, and clear waters.
Jiang Hui pointed at it. “See? The game’s like this. No monsters to fight, no levels to gain, no skills. Just... sky, land, mountains, rivers. Almost identical to our world—well, except for one thing. There are no Divine Chosen or pollution in the game.”
What? Yu Xing was confused. How was that any different from Earth?
“Then what do people do in the game?” she asked.
“Uh... whatever they feel like, I guess.” Jiang Hui placed the game on the table, tapping his fingers on it lightly. “Some kill each other, some build houses, some make friends. Others just admire the scenery. I know a couple who used it for affairs—they’d meet their lovers in-game to avoid getting caught by their partners.”
Yu Xing: “...”
Yu Xing still couldn't quite understand how such a game could become so addictive, even causing deaths from gaming addiction and leading to such major societal unrest.
"Just because this game sparked such a huge controversy, people are resorting to hiring assassins?" Yu Xing looked completely lost.
"Actually..." Jiang Hui hesitated before continuing, "I think there must be more to this. There's definitely more going on here—I just haven't been able to uncover it."
"Why do you think so?" Yu Xing knew Jiang Hui had his ways of finding things out and wouldn't speculate without reason.
"Do you know much about Eternal Entertainment?" Jiang Hui's expression grew serious. "The company was founded twenty years ago, but its owner, Miao Pengwei, wasn't just some newcomer twenty years ago. He's been around since the beginning of the New Era, held high-ranking government positions back in the day. You could say guys like him built this federation."
"For some unknown reason, Miao Pengwei later left his government post and went into business. Even so, he's got friends, proteges, and allies throughout the government. He's an immensely influential figure in this federation—even the Chief Executive shows him respect."
"Now, a man like him wants to sell a game. To put it bluntly, this game has only killed a few hundred people. With his power, even if it had killed tens of thousands, what difference would it make? How did he suddenly become the world's most wanted man?"
As Yu Xing listened, her forehead scrunched up. Such complicated matters were way above the pay grade of someone who'd spent most of her time in a psychiatric ward.
She massaged her forehead, though she couldn’t help worrying about Miao Yuanjin.
From what she’d seen during their time together, Miao Yuanjin absolutely worshipped her grandfather—even more than her own parents.
Yu Xing couldn’t help but wonder: Was Miao Yuanjin caught up in all this?
She wanted to see her, to ask how she was doing lately, if she'd gotten in trouble because of their connection.
She also remembered Miao Yuanjin once mentioning that she’d seen the magic circle diagram in her grandfather’s office and had promised to ask him about it.
But too much had happened since then, and there’d never been a chance.
After a moment of thought, Yu Xing turned to Jiang Hui.
Noticing the shift in her expression, he raised an eyebrow. "You’re thinking of taking the job?"
"Yeah right, no chance," Yu Xing said. "Do you think I could contact my old friends now?"
Jiang Hui’s lips twitched. "I’d advise against it. From what I know, everyone you’re acquainted with is under surveillance. At best, their devices are tapped."
Yu Xing’s face scrunched up. "Then how can I reach out to them without being detected?"
