Chapter 9: Unexpected Incident

Inside Jiang Meijiao's room—

Shi Yu was wiping Jiang Meijiao's hands, and as he wiped, he became lost in thought.

His mind was full of wondering what exactly the relationship between Jiang Ji and Shi Yu was. Last night, he had clearly seen the two of them talking about something.

He quietly approached to listen, but only caught a word or two, not the whole conversation. Yet the atmosphere of their talk made Shi Yu concerned.

He couldn't help but let his imagination run wild: Could it be that Shi Yu wanted to take even Brother Jiangji from him? But...

"Xiao Yu..." Jiang Meijiao saw Shi Yu suddenly lost in thought and called out softly, "What are you thinking about?"

Jiang Meijiao's call interrupted Shi Yu's chaotic thoughts. Shi Yu realized he had been distracted and immediately apologized: "Mom, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to zone out."

Jiang Meijiao laughed: "You, don't apologize for everything you say. You and Little Yu are polar opposites—one is overly domineering, the other is ridiculously soft. Can't you two balance each other out?"

Shi Yu smiled but said nothing.

Shi Yan pushed the door open and walked in: "Mom, how are you today?"

Jiang Meijiao: "What can I say? Xiao Yu takes perfect care of me."

Shi Yan: "That's good. The company has been busy these days, so I might not come home often."

Jiang Meijiao: "It's fine, go ahead with your work. I have Xiao Yu here."

Seeing that Shi Yan was about to leave, Shi Yu took the initiative: "Brother, let me see you out."

Shi Yan looked at Shi Yu with slight surprise. The person who usually avoided him was taking the initiative to see him off today?

As soon as they left the room, Shi Yu asked eagerly: "Brother, do you know Liu Zhixin?"

Shi Yan's eyes were full of confusion: "Liu Zhixin? Who is that?"

Shi Yu pursed his lips: "Nothing, I just saw Little Yu investigating him, so I thought I'd ask for him."

He hadn't meant to leak the content of Shi Yu and Jiang Ji's conversation; he just thought that if he could help Brother Jiangji, maybe Jiangji would think more highly of him.

Shi Yan: "Oh, is that so."

After Shi Yan left, Shi Yu pushed open Jiang Meijiao's door and happened to see her getting out of bed.

He quickly went over to support her: "Mom, why are you getting up?"

Jiang Meijiao: "I saw that the flowers in the garden are blooming beautifully, and I want to go take a look."

Shi Yu: "Let me help you over."

"Hey, Brother Yu, it's Xiao Ma. I'm right downstairs at your company now."

Shi Yu answered the phone, glanced at Jiang Ji in the office, and said to the caller: "Wait."

He hung up, stood up, and shouted to all the employees in the office: "I'm treating everyone to coffee. Anyone want some?"

The office let out a joyful gasp.

Liu Zhixin happened to come out of the CEO's office. Hearing this, he was about to sarcastically remark how Shi Yu, an intern assistant, could afford to treat everyone to coffee. But as soon as he opened his mouth, someone called out: "Team Leader Liu, someone's looking for you."

Liu Zhixin saw the woman standing outside, and his expression instantly changed. He hurried out.

Shi Yu turned around and just happened to see Liu Zhixin grabbing the woman's hand and forcefully pulling her outside.

Going downstairs, Shi Yu found Xiao Ma's car, pulled open the door, and got in.

As soon as Xiao Ma saw Shi Yu, he flattered: "Brother Yu, I heard you've been working lately. So this is where you work? It's so grand."

Shi Yu: "Enough chatter, where's the stuff?"

Xiao Ma handed a document bag to Shi Yu: "Didn't find much, just some public information."

The bag contained the information on Jiang Ji that Shi Yu had previously asked Xiao Ma to investigate. After Jiang Ji learned that he was being investigated, Shi Yu didn't expect Xiao Ma and his team to dig up much useful stuff.

Today, he had called Xiao Ma over to ask him to have people investigate Liu Zhixin.

He quickly glanced at Jiang Ji's information and was about to put it away when Xiao Ma said mysteriously: "Brother Yu, even though I didn't find anything useful, I did hear a piece of gossip."

Shi Yu was indifferent: "What gossip?"

Xiao Ma: "That Jiang Ji used to live in an old neighborhood, right? I helped a lady move some things for a few days, and she secretly told me. Jiang Ji's mom jumped off the building because his dad had an affair, it wasn't depression at all.

And his dad didn't forget to turn off the gas because of excessive grief, causing an accidental fire. Instead, he deliberately set himself on fire to die with his lover, and even cursed people before he died."

The official cause of Jiang Ji's parents' death had always been: the mother jumped off the building due to a depressive episode, and the father, overcome with grief, accidentally caused a gas leak that led to a fire. Unexpectedly, from Xiao Ma he heard a different story.

"Is it reliable?" Shi Yu looked at Xiao Ma.

Xiao Ma said sheepishly: "I told you it's just gossip. If it were reliable, I would have written it in the document bag."

Shi Yu nodded: "Alright, I understand. I called you here today to ask you to investigate someone else. No need for Jiang Ji anymore—he already knows someone is looking into him. We won't find anything more."

Xiao Ma: "Brother Yu, just say the word. Even if this person is mining in Africa, I'll find out which mine."

As soon as he finished speaking, there was a loud bang.

Before Shi Yu could even see what it was, the front windshield cracked into a spiderweb pattern.

After Xiao Ma saw clearly what had fallen onto his car, he screamed in terror: "Brother Yu, it's a person!! It's a person!!"

Shi Yu's hands gripped the sides of the seat tightly. The person on the car had twisted limbs, blood flowing from all orifices, and eyes staring wide open.

Liu Zhixin had died right before him. That horrible face was staring straight at Shi Yu.
