Chapter 133: It Was I Who Made a Mistake
by 一纸半Chapter 133: It Was I Who Made a Mistake
Princess Wen An knew that Chu Xu had always been ruthless, but this was the first time he had spoken to her so coldly.
She had come to apologize, at least to ensure that Chu Xu did not think poorly of her.
Deep down, she still harbored a faint hope that if Chu Xu softened his heart, he might help change the Emperor's mind.
He was the youngest and most capable Chancellor after all.
To her, he had always been an unattainable star in the sky, capable of achieving anything he set his mind to.
Yet Chu Xu refused to acknowledge his feelings for the Gao family's daughter.
This made Princess Wen An feel even more distressed.
So, the next day, she summoned Gao Wenyan.
She had met this lady a few times before, but with ulterior motives, she had never truly observed or understood her.
Every time she saw Gao Wenyan, she couldn't help but compare herself.
What exactly was it that made her inferior?
Though Gao Wenyan was very beautiful, she rarely dressed up meticulously, often wearing casual attire, looking lazy and carefree. How could she be considered a proper lady?
But why was it her who captured all of Chu Xu's attention?
Gao Wenyan arrived as promised, still in casual clothes. Her years of martial arts training kept her back straight, and she walked lightly yet firmly.
Her eyes lost their laziness upon seeing Princess Wen An.
Princess Wen An had prepared exquisite snacks and delicious tea for her.
However, Gao Wenyan seemed uninterested in these offerings.
Seeing Princess Wen An staring at her with wide eyes, Gao Wenyan swallowed her last bite and said, "Yes, quite tasty."
Princess Wen An couldn't help but laugh.
It was touching how considerate she was, pretending to enjoy something when she clearly didn't.
Wen An refilled her cup with tea and said, "Many things have happened recently, and I haven't had the chance to properly thank you."
She lowered her head and touched the rim of the cup, her voice tinged with sadness.
"There won't be another opportunity."
Gao Wenyan remembered the arranged marriage and felt a twinge of guilt. If it weren't for her, Chu Xu might not have acted against Wen An.
So she remained silent.
"I thought you would comfort me."
"Princess, you are a person of great virtue. Your presence is a blessing to Great Ning."
Princess Wen An shook her head and admitted, "It was I who made a mistake."
Otherwise, this blessing would not have fallen on her.
One wrong step led to many more.
From the moment she began plotting against Gao Wenyan, her intentions became twisted, leading her further astray.
She hated Noble Concubine Xue's arrogance and Chu Xu's indifference towards her.
The darkness in her heart grew like vines, entangling her and driving her to commit many wrongs.
Only after the decision for the marriage was made did Wen An realize there was no future with Chu Xu and finally regained her composure.
Sitting here with Gao Wenyan today, she felt conflicted.
On one hand, she genuinely wanted to get along with her, perhaps earning some respect from Chu Xu and salvaging her self-esteem.
On the other hand, she was consumed by jealousy.
Why her? Why her?
Watching Gao Wenyan remain composed, Wen An chose to break the silence.
"I spent the whole night thinking about it, but I still can't imagine."
"What does the Chancellor look like when he's alone with you?"
The lady's pale face froze for a moment, and she placed her teacup back on the table.
Gao Wenyan steadied herself and her thoughts.
"Is the princess joking?"
An identical response, as if she didn't care.
Princess Wen An scrutinized Gao Wenyan closely, not wanting to miss any detail.
