Chapter 60: The Affection Points Event

Jokes aside, Meng Shu put away the clothes and returned to the main topic: "Did you forget that there are potions stored in the basement? Those potions are really valuable; you should deal with them yourself."

He spoke with integrity and sincerity, completely unaware of Ling Qingjue's true intentions.

Ling Qingjue was furious, his breathing quickening. "I told you, I don't want any of them anymore."

Meng Shu looked up in surprise: "But those things must be very important!"

Did he have to grab Meng Shu by the ears and say, "These are all gifts for you! I'm just looking for an excuse! You moron, just kneel and thank me already!"?

Didn't this fool realize he was doing it on purpose?

Ling Qingjue once again cursed straight men—their cerebral cortex smoother than an egg, can't figure out such a simple thing.

    "They're all junk to me."

Meng Shu kept arguing: "Why don't you go check them out? You must have spent a ton of time on all those potions..."

"I said I don't want them!" Ling Qingjue's ears turned red, and his voice was fierce. "Do whatever you want with them—throw them away, sell them, I don't care. Why are you hounding me?"

The esteemed Cat King gave a gift to a human; the human should immediately kneel in gratitude, shout "Long live the Cat King," and not babble on like this!

Others would beg for them and he wouldn't give them!

    He's so clueless!

Meng Shu rubbed his nose. "Oh..."

Well, you can't really blame him. In the twenty-eight years of Meng Shu's life, no one had ever given him a gift in such a roundabout way.

Or rather, Meng Shu had never received a gift.

Birthday gifts, coming-of-age gifts, holiday gifts... he had never gotten any.

He had only eaten cake once in his life. At eighteen, he spent two yuan at a street stall to buy a paper-cup cake, only half the size of a palm, with cheap vegetable cream and a dry, crumbly cake sponge—tasted only of artificial sweetness and grease. But that was a gift Meng Shu gave to himself, the first and the last.

That was why, when faced with these treasures that the whole continent would kill for, Meng Shu couldn't bring himself to believe that Ling Qingjue intended them for him. He could only assume that Ling Qingjue had so many treasures he just forgot there was a stash in the basement.

He gathered all the potions—three hundred and forty-five bottles in total.

Meng Shu stored them all in his inventory, filling it completely.

Even though these items were now in his inventory, he had no intention of keeping them. Instead, he planned to sell them and give all the money back to Ling Qingjue.

When it was time to sleep, Meng Shu found a book on his bedside.

On the cover was a line drawing of a cat, and there was some weird writing above it.

Meng Shu flipped through a few pages but couldn't understand it, so he summoned the system to check.

"Item Name: Cat Clan Language Tutorial"

    "Use tutorial?"

    "Yes" "No"

A while ago, Ling Qingjue had said that once Meng Shu raised his affection points to forty, he would teach him the cat language.

Meng Shu thought Ling Qingjue was messing with him, but he actually sent the tutorial.

    Meng Shu selected "Yes."

The book glowed, pages flipping rapidly, before turning into a white light that flew into Meng Shu's forehead.

    "Tutorial completed."

"You have learned the Cat Clan language."

He slapped his forehead and muttered, "That's it? I'm done?"

System: "You have met the trigger condition for character Ling Qingjue's 40 affection points storyline. Go out at 2 a.m. and head to your neighbor Kailin's backyard to trigger the event."

    Go out at 2 a.m.

Kailin was Ling Qingjue's neighbor—a young girl who had adopted that evil cow cat that curses at Ling Qingjue every day.

He had to go pick a fight with that cow cat.

Now that he had finally learned the cat language, he had to teach that cow cat the harsh reality of the world.

Meng Shu slipped out of his house without hesitation and went to knock on Kailin's door ahead of time.

Kailin warmly invited him in and poured him some hot cocoa. Upon hearing his purpose, she was quite surprised: "You've already got his affection up to forty?"

Meng Shu thanked her. "Just lucky."

"It's not just luck. The others who tried to win him over only got his points up to fifteen at best." Kailin rested her chin on her hand, her eyes shining with admiration. "You're the strongest Hero I've ever seen!"

She praised him so much that Meng Shu felt embarrassed, his cheeks reddened. "Not that impressive..."

Kailin continued, "But I'm surprised his affection event is related to my backyard. I barely have any interactions with him. Even though we've been neighbors for years, he still doesn't know my name. Once I ran into him and said hi, and he said, 'Hello, Wang Cuihua.' Oh my god, who even is Wang Cuihua!"

Meng Shu was amused and exasperated: "He used to always call me Zhang Lin."

"Zhang Lin? He was probably the previous hero, right? Ling Qingjue tossed him into the Demon Beast Forest, and then no one knows where he went. Haven't seen him in years."

"So he really did throw other people into the Demon Beast Forest?"

Kailin asked: "Didn't he throw you in as well?"

"...Actually, I was thrown in too."

As expected, Ling Qingjue didn't target anyone in particular; he bullied everyone equally.

Berry Cat was still Berry Cat.

He's a man of his word.

Meng Shu laughed a little and said, "I think it's related to your cat. Your cat seems to know him."

"You mean Xiao Guai? He's very affectionate and well-behaved. You'll love him."

Meng Shu gave an awkward but polite smile.

Do you know your cat was cursing me out at my front door?

Kailin called out with a smile, "Xiao Guai, come here quickly!"

Xiao Guai, who had been sleeping in, immediately adopted a syrupy-sweet voice, trotted over with small steps, and meowed sweetly, "Meow meow meow~"

Then it saw the man who spoke dog-speak.

    Instantly, it stopped meowing.

Kailin scooped it up and said, "Xiao Guai, this is the Lord Hero. You must respect the Lord Hero!"

Xiao Guai gritted its teeth, barely holding back, almost grinding them to dust, and twisted its face into a menacingly 'friendly' smile at the Lord Hero: "You @#¥*&#"

    It cursed like a sailor.

Of course, Kailin only heard it meowing.

Kailin looked at Meng Shu eagerly, her eyes pleading, completely fooled by the cat, "See? Isn't he cute?"

Meng Shu: "Haha... Yeah, *really* cute!"

    What a *wonderful* cat!
