Chapter 40 Cut My Head Off to Apologize
by 李怀沙Chapter 40: I'll Chop My Head Off to Apologize
There were three Crystal Cranes in the center of the lake.
They observed their surroundings for a while, found nothing unusual, and buried their heads back into their wings to sleep.
Meng Shu's heart, which had been in his throat, finally settled back down.
Ling Qingjue stared at his face without blinking, trying to catch that fleeting illusion again.
Meng Shu touched his face and asked, confused, "Why are you staring at me?"
"Ugly as hell," Ling Qingjue said coldly. "Just looking at you makes me wanna laugh."
Meng Shu was choked up.
Was his face really that hilarious?
Sixth-tier monsters usually had around sixty defense points, and Meng Shu could barely hold his own against them with Sword Light Slash.
But today, he only had one more Sword Light Slash left in him.
Meng Shu quietly bided his time, watching for the right moment. If the angle was right, he might be able to kill three birds with one stone.
These three cranes just happened to be lined up perfectly. If he could get to that tree on the other side and unleash Sword Light Slash in one go, he could probably chop the head clean off the front crane.
The shockwave from the sword light would at least cripple the other two.
Meng Shu made up his mind, but the problem was that tree was way too far. It was too late to get over there now, and the area was full of swamps, so one wrong move and the cranes would be spooked.
He hesitated for a second, then swallowed his pride and begged Ling Qingjue, "Kitty cat, can you use your Space Magic to zap me over to that tree across the lake?"
Ling Qingjue's face was ice-cold: "No way."
Meng Shu had seen that coming and wasn't the least bit discouraged. "This is for getting you those pretty feathers too, you know. You don't even have to fight—just teleport me over and wait for me here."
Ling Qingjue's dark green eyes went cold. "You're trying to chase me, and you still want me to help you grind for materials? What do you think I am? You think I'd stoop that low?"
Meng Shu hadn't thought that far ahead. He scratched his head. "I don't really care either way. Getting to that spot just makes it easier to get out alive. If I die here, you'd probably be pissed at me."
"Why the hell would I be mad if you die?" Ling Qingjue didn't want to help at all. He was already squatting here feeding the mosquitoes for no reason—he was already feeling sorry for himself!
And now Meng Shu had the nerve to ask him to do something?
Not to mention that crap about him being mad if Meng Shu died? How could he possibly be mad?
He couldn't give a damn whether Meng Shu lived or died. If this guy kicked the bucket, he wouldn't be mad at all!
Meng Shu had no clue that this cat's thoughts were more twisted than a mountain road. He said, all innocent, "If I die, you might have to bring me back to life. Didn't you say you hate reviving people more than anything? I don't wanna be a burden."
"..."
Ling Qingjue vaguely remembered saying something along those lines.
He turned his head away. "Just this one time."
Meng Shu's face lit up. He grabbed his hand and said, all serious, "Thanks, kitty cat."
"..."
Ling Qingjue pulled his hand back, looking uncomfortable. "Your hands are all sweaty and gross. Don't touch me."
Then a magic circle appeared under Meng Shu's feet, and in the blink of an eye, he was on a tree across the lake.
He had to admit, Ling Qingjue had picked a perfect spot—enough to take out all three in one shot.
Meng Shu steadied himself. If he didn't kill them in one hit, he'd be the one dead!
He drew his sword, and the fiery red sword light was like a soaring flame phoenix, diving straight for the center of the lake!
As the sword light shot out, Meng Shu's heart jumped, and on instinct, he swung another sword—an advanced skill, Sword Dance Chaos.
Two flame phoenixes twisted and danced together, kicking up a fierce wind.
Even Ling Qingjue squinted a little.
Not because the strike was too strong, but because the wind was so bad sand might get in his eyes.
This Meng Shu could actually figure out skills on his own?
It seemed that in his original world, he must have fought often.
Where the sword light passed, even the air boiled. The sharp light cut through the sky, and one crane in the center of the lake hadn't even moved before its head and body were separated.
Unfortunately, this strike only killed one. It blocked most of the damage, while the other two monsters only suffered minor injuries. They flapped their wings in panic and launched ice attacks wildly in all directions.
Meng Shu could no longer use skills. Now trapped in the tree, when the ice came at him, he could only block with his sword, but it wasn't enough.
He was just a useless hero with a defense of 2.
Even though he was now at the third tier, his defense was only 6.
Without hesitation, Meng Shu jumped down from the back of the tree, landing with a clever roll that reduced most of the impact.
Ling Qingjue stood not far away, casting a protective spell on himself.
The outside world was so noisy.
But inside his protective magic barrier, it was all peace and tranquility.
He even felt like having a cup of tea.
However, Meng Shu wouldn't give him that chance. Seeing he couldn't win, Meng Shu didn't think twice and ran toward him, shouting, "Kitty cat, save me! Help!"
Ling Qingjue: "..."
Hadn't he said not to call for help!
He had overestimated Meng Shu's pride!
Meng Shu was indeed shameless. He was just gambling—if he could kill all three in one go, it was his lucky break; if not, then heaven was telling him to bow his head.
Since heaven dared to make him bow, then he would—bow.
What else could he do, rebel?
Meng Shu stumbled and rolled all the way. The crane's attacks were all ice-based, with slowing and freezing effects. Once hit, the muscles would necrotize.
Watching him run away, he looked like a mess—running and yelling all the while—but oddly enough, the icy attacks always just barely missed him, unable to harm him in the slightest.
Ling Qingjue got even more confused. Wasn’t Meng Shu’s world supposed to be free of monsters? If there were no monsters, how was he so good at dodging?
It was as if… he lived on the edge of life and death every day, practiced through tons of bloody fights.
He just stood there, not lifting a finger, and Meng Shu was losing it, dodging attacks while shouting, "Help! Help! Mighty Lord Cat, save me!"
Ling Qingjue was so embarrassed he wanted to die and couldn't help yelling back, "Shut up!"
The moment he spoke, the Crystal Crane noticed him, and based on the magical fluctuations, judged him to be the biggest threat.
So the Crystal Crane launched an attack at Ling Qingjue.
Seeing the monster stop chasing him, Meng Shu halted, his face going all holy and untouchable. "Lord Cat! This is destiny, man—it's all you!"
Ling Qingjue gritted his teeth. You son of a bitch, Meng Shu!
He was so pissed he almost one-shot the crane, but then something made his face fall, and he held back.
Fortunately, the sixth-tier beast’s attacks weren’t strong enough to breach Ling Qingjue’s defenses.
He remained where he stood, staring straight at the two monsters.
Meng Shu was stunned too. He had expected Ling Qingjue to obliterate the beasts and then come after him.
Instead, Ling Qingjue just stood there and took it?
Ling Qingjue let out a breath, his face expressionless. "Meng Shu, I don't know any offensive magic. I can’t kill them."
His jaw tightened, the amusement in his eyes vanishing completely, and his voice dropped to a whisper. "I only know some cheap tricks, and those tricks all require preparation."
Even the talisman he had given Meng Shu was a pre-prepared tool.
A mage with such profound magical power claiming he knew no attack magic—anyone would find that suspicious.
He looked at Meng Shu, his gaze cold and clear. "I’m not lying to you. I really can’t."
Meng Shu’s heart jolted. He picked up his sword again, aiming it at the crane. "Alright, then stay put. I'll chop their heads off and say sorry."
