Chapter 3: The Weakest Brave in History

Meng Shu had been to the police station plenty of times. In his youth, he’d fought from the docks to the alleys, and he was practically on a first-name basis with the veteran cops.

Now that Ling Qingjue was dragging him to the station, Meng Shu didn’t resist much, just wondering where his phone went.

Before leaving the balcony, Meng Shu glanced back at the crushed flower pot, thinking the petals looked like they were glowing.

Thinking this, he asked, “That flower you were growing—it looked kind of shiny.”

    Ling Qingjue ignored him.

Meng Shu kept talking, “It’s not that I won’t pay you back. I really can’t find my phone. Once we get to the station, I’ll pay you ten times the market price, okay?”

    “Market price?”

Ling Qingjue laughed as if he’d heard a joke. He stopped abruptly, grinding his teeth loud enough to hear. “Do you even know what that flower is? It only drops from killing a revenant beast with a one-in-ten-thousand chance, and you’re talking about market price?”

“What revenant beast? What drop rate?” Meng Shu didn’t understand, shrugging dismissively. “Isn’t it just a flower?”

“Just a flower?” Ling Qingjue repeated his words.

His cold face nearly twisted with anger as he shoved open the glass door. “You better never come begging me for anything.”

Meng Shu was baffled. Two strangers—what would he ever need to beg him for?

This pretty boy was way too weird.

Maybe all hot people are just stuck-up. He got it—it's called being a pretty bully.

Meng Shu scurried after him, apologizing nonstop, “Hey, hey, my bad. Hey, handsome, how old are you?”

Ling Qingjue didn’t even look at him.

It was a two-story standalone villa, and the decor matched Ling Qingjue’s personality—cold, simple, and a total turn-off.

But hey, beauty's in the eye of the beholder. No matter how cold this little beauty was, in Meng Shu’s eyes, it was just the pride of the beloved.

He definitely didn't think Ling Qingjue would like him. He was dying—how could he drag someone else into his mess?

Before he dies, checking out the eye candy might help him look like this in his next life.

So hot. If he could date someone like this before he kicks it, he'd die happy.

Meng Shu's head was full of random crap, and he walked straight into the guy's back.

Ling Qingjue got even more pissed, shoving him away. “You did that on purpose?”

Meng Shu thought, *You're the one who stopped out of nowhere. My bad for zoning out?*

He didn’t say it out loud. Pretty people get a pass.

He kept grinning, “My bad, my bad.”

Can't hit a smiling face. Ling Qingjue choked back his curses, his tone stiff. “How the hell did you get onto my balcony?”

Meng Shu couldn't explain it either, shrugging like it was no big deal. “I flew.”

“Flew?” Ling Qingjue eyed him suspiciously, a bit disdainful, muttering under his breath, “You even know flying magic?”

    “Huh?”

“Looks like I’ll need to set up a barrier.” Ling Qingjue muttered to himself, his profile lit up by the sun, his skin nearly translucent white.

Meng Shu thought the guy was a bit nuts, but then again, he was nuts himself—who was he to talk?

He grinned and followed, his flirty side not giving up. “Hey, handsome, how old are you?”

Ling Qingjue shot him a glance, clearly not intending to answer.

    “Got a boyfriend?”

    “None of your business.”

“So that's a no, huh?” Meng Shu raised an eyebrow, his lips curling up lazily.

No partner—good. If he was taken, Meng Shu wouldn't have the guts to hit on him.

Just as they got to the entrance, a man came running from a distance, about fifty or sixty, dressed plain, sweating in the blazing sun and wiping his forehead.

“Qingjue, the witch just told me there's a teleportation array here, so I came right away—”

Ling Qingjue stayed stone-faced, shoving Meng Shu forward. “Is this the guy you're looking for?”

The man stopped, checking Meng Shu out. Tall and long-legged, wearing a thin gray hoodie, he looked about twenty.

He had a sharp, handsome face with defined bone structure, giving off a tough vibe at first.

But his eyes were surprisingly soft and warm, which mellowed him out and made people want to get close.

Meng Shu gave a friendly smile. “Hey.”

The man grabbed his hand, talking fast. “Where'd you come from? Who taught you the teleportation array? Was it that Lake guy?”

    What Lake?

Meng Shu looked confused. “Lake? The homeless dude?”

The man winced, looking pained. “I told him not to go to that world, but he wouldn't listen! How'd he end up homeless!”

He changed his expression fast. “I'm the town mayor. This is Moon Bay. You used a teleportation array to get here, so you're the legendary hero.”

    Meng Shu's smile dropped.

*So awkward. Are you guys seriously not embarrassed?*

“You're not going to make me save the world, are you?” Meng Shu's mouth twitched. *Are you kidding? Sending a terminally ill patient to save the world?*

The mayor gave him a strange look. “Why would you need to save the world? Heroes show up seven or eight times a year. There aren't that many worlds to save.”

    Okay, he was overthinking it.

Meng Shu quickly accepted the idea of transmigration, because he saw a line of text appear above the mayor's head—

    “Unplayable Character: Wang Defa”

    “Current Affinity: 10”

This must be a game world. Meng Shu figured he'd probably bind a system soon, to keep up with the transmigration trend.

Dying just in time to catch the wave of the time-travel trend—at least I can brag about it when I'm dead.

But a time travel gig should come with a mission, or it's too outdated.

Meng Shu asked, “So, what’s so special about me, this ‘hero’?”

The town chief looked him dead in the eye: “Pathetically weak.”

    Meng Shu: “…”

The town chief added, “Hero is just a title. The full name is ‘the unlucky tool of a hero who doesn’t even know the full story but still dares to time travel.’ Following the rule of keeping it short and sweet, I call you hero.”

Seriously, do you have to be this honest?!

The town chief quickly turned his attention to Ling Qingjue: “Qingjue, you look pale. What happened?”

Ling Qingjue said, “He destroyed my flower.”

The town chief asked, “What flower?”

    “Resurrection Magnolia.”

The town chief's smile dropped, and he shot Meng Shu a dirty look: “How could you destroy his flower?”

Meng Shu was at a loss for words: “That magic circle appeared on his balcony. I landed smack on the flowerpot the second I got here. I didn’t mean to!”

“That’s a Resurrection Magnolia!” the town chief said. “No wonder you made him so angry.”

Meng Shu heard a “ding” in his ear, and another line appeared above the town chief’s head—【Mission Issuer】.

    Well, that's blunt.

The town chief continued, “Those plants are Qingjue's pride and joy and very important to our town. Since you wrecked it, you gotta make it up to him.”

Meng Shu wanted to ask—isn't this supposed to be a game world? As the 'hero' who time-traveled in, shouldn't he get some kind of noob protection?

Was he really getting stuck with this huge mess right from the start?

He forced a smile, holding back for the sake of the pretty boy's face, through gritted teeth: “Ha, fine, fine. I'll pay him back.”

Ling Qingjue lounged against the doorframe, looking all casual, a smirk curling on his lips: “He can't do squat. How's he gonna pay me back?”

The town chief said, “Find you another one?”

“Does he have the guts for that? He'd probably kick the bucket out there, and I'd have to go rescue him.”

Ling Qingjue's smirk got even more sarcastic, his eyes deep and bright: “Pay up. A hundred grand.”

The town chief nodded, “Hero, he's not ripping you off. That flower is really worth more than a hundred grand—it's priceless. Since it wasn't intentional, just pay some money and call it even.”

    A hundred grand and not a rip-off?

Meng Shu wanted to argue, but a clear mechanical voice echoed in his ear: “Mission released: Compensate character Ling Qingjue for the flower, amount 100,000. Current progress: 0/100,000.”

    No mission reward?

    “Mission deadline: No time limit.”

“Mission reward: Character Ling Qingjue’s favorability increases by ten points.”
