Chapter 142: Revive Meng Shu
by 李怀沙Chapter 142: Resurrecting Meng Shu
The bloody truth laid out before him, Ling Qingjue instead chuckled quietly, as if he had heard some kind of joke.
He calmly nodded, his voice full of twists and turns, the final syllable rising lightly and trembling slightly, his eyes curving. "Oh, so it was just a curse. He never intended to come back."
"How strange, that what you humans call love could turn into a lie."
Ling Qingjue spoke in a calm, unruffled tone, his eyes like stagnant dead water, and coldly spat out two words: "Liar."
That was the only word he could use to describe Meng Shu.
"I wish he'd said so earlier—I wouldn't have waited for him. We're done, then we're done. Did he think I'd care that much?"
Ling Qingjue looked down at Lake from a height, smiling sweetly. "Oh, by the way, you said he's dead?"
He leaned down until he was eye to eye with Lake.
"Where is his body?"
Lake felt his scalp tingle under that gaze. No wonder Ling Qingjue was chosen as the Demon King—it wasn't just his immense magical power; his very personality was twisted.
Once Meng Shu left, all the vicious traits hidden deep inside him came out.
No one could rein him in anymore.
"You—what do you want to do?"
Ling Qingjue leaned in and grinned, baring his stark white teeth, in a cheerful tone: "What else? Bring him back to life, then choke him to death myself. Hah! Since he wants to die so badly, then let him die."
His fingers slowly tightened, and he added cruelly: "But only at my hands, because he dared to lie to me, dared to make me wait for him for four hundred and eighty days for no reason at all!"
His eyes moved sluggishly, like a cold-blooded snake, as he smiled and asked: "Where's his body?"
His cold tone coiled around Lake's neck like a snake's tail.
Lake could tell instinctively that Ling Qingjue wasn't joking. This man didn't just want to resurrect Meng Shu—the hatred in his eyes was impossible to hide.
Vindictive and ruthless.
This cat wouldn't even go easy on his own lover.
But Ling Qingjue didn't think he was wrong at all. He was just full of hatred—hatred for how Meng Shu deceived him, for making him wait so long, for daring to abandon him and go die by himself.
He couldn't recall how they fell in love.
Ling Qingjue didn't even know what Meng Shu was like.
But he knew himself. Before he agreed to Meng Shu's courtship, he must have made sure the other person was being sincere over and over. He must have asked Meng Shu if he was sure about staying with him—once he chose him, he could never betray him.
If Meng Shu dared to abandon him, Ling Qingjue would tear him apart.
There were many excuses and reasons, but abandonment was abandonment. Meng Shu was way too arrogant in what he did. Why should Ling Qingjue not hate him?
"He's already dead! He can't come back! If he knew you'd become such a monster, he'd be so sad!"
Lake shouted back, his neck stiffened, "Before he died, he was still thinking of you, and yet you blame him like this!"
"Heartbroken?"
Ling Qingjue sneered, his eyes bloodshot. "What about me?! I waited for him for four hundred and eighty days and nights—wasn't I heartbroken? Wasn't I in pain? He could just sneak off and die without even telling me—why the hell shouldn't I hate him?!"
He abruptly grabbed Lake by the collar, practically grinding his teeth. "I don't have time to mess around with you. Where the hell is his body?!"
Lake's eyes turned red. "It's been burned to ashes! What exactly do you want? He's dead, and you still won't let him go!"
"Burned to ashes?" Ling Qingjue still smiled. "That's it? Isn't that just a matter of getting another Resurrection Magnolia plant?"
"He's not from this world. You can't resurrect him." Lake could barely breathe in his grip, managed to force out, "Calm down. How crazy have you gotten?"
"Insane? I'm not insane. I know perfectly well what I'm doing." Ling Qingjue released him, still with a smile on his face. "You just need to tell me where he is, and cooperate. Okay?"
Lake shuddered.
He had a feeling that if he so much as said no, Ling Qingjue would burn him to ashes on the spot.
"Where is he?" Ling Qingjue asked again.
Lake gave in completely. "I can tell you where he is, but can you please stop hurting him..."
"That's between me and him. What's it to an outsider like you?" Ling Qingjue frowned. "What's your relationship with him? Did you two ever date?"
Lake was scared out of his mind and quickly denied it. "No, no! I swear, we're completely innocent!"
He lowered his head. "But Meng Shu was truly a good person. If he heard you say these things, he would be sad..."
"Didn't he sneak off to die for me? Then let me go crazy for him, okay?"
Ling Qingjue was still smiling, each word hammering into Lake's bones. "Aren't we both selfish? We drive each other mad—that's what love is."
"But right now, only I'm going crazy. It hurts so much. I want him to go crazy with me, to bear all the pain I've suffered."
Ling Qingjue's eyes were icy cold, yet the corners of his mouth curved up in a smile. "Don't waste my time. Tell me where he is. If you don't, I have a thousand ways to make you talk."
After a moment of struggle, Lake gave up. "At my place."
"Oh, your place." Ling Qingjue let out a strange laugh. "Haha, he ended up with you even after death?"
Lake wasn't stupid; he immediately realized Ling Qingjue was jealous again. He quickly waved his hands in denial. "We're really completely innocent! I'll give you his ashes right now! Right now! You take them!"
He scrambled and crawled, fleeing home as fast as he could. He barely caught his breath in his bedroom before he was startled again.
Ling Qingjue was already in his room, standing in front of the bookshelf, looking at the urn.
He turned his head, his eyes cold and calm. "Is this it?"
Lake nodded dully.
"Oh." Ling Qingjue picked up the urn, his face unreadable. "How pitiful. Can't even keep his body intact."
Lake whispered, "In their world, the dead aren't allowed to be resurrected. When they die, they have to be buried. Cemetery plots are extremely expensive, and he couldn't afford one, so... they had to cremate him."
"Who asked you?" Ling Qingjue's jealousy grew. He knew nothing about Meng Shu, yet this random wizard who appeared out of nowhere knew everything.
The more this person knew, the more envious he became.
Lake covered his mouth and muttered sullenly, "I won't say another word!"
"Not allowed to be resurrected?" Ling Qingjue looked at the photo on the urn—a black-and-white picture, very blurry, the face barely distinguishable.
He stroked the person's face with his fingers, chuckling softly, "It doesn't matter, I'll see you soon."
As he spoke, Lake saw the space around him begin to shatter.
Countless cracks split the air, and bizarre dimensional passages instantly opened up in the thousands. Space began to warp, magic circles formed and then shattered, as reality nearly collapsed.
He heard the lament of the natural laws.
Ling Qingjue stood at the center of the dazzling, chaotic magic circle, holding the urn in his arms. He casually pointed to a dimensional rift, "Seems like I found it—his world."
Lake could barely stand, his brow twitching, "What are you going to do?"
"Resurrect him."
Ling Qingjue paused, then stepped into the dimensional rift, casually adding, "Oh, and I'll break the laws of reality while I'm at it."
