Chapter 50: Pat on the Head

Meng Shu landed on his bed.

He jumped off the bed in a hurry and couldn't wait to go find Ling Qingjue.

A week had passed since they last met.

The warm afternoon sunlight spilled onto the windowsill, like a layer of gold dust.

Meng Shu squinted, enjoying the sun, and guessed that Ling Qingjue should be basking in the sun right now.

He walked to the small balcony and immediately spotted Ling Qingjue.

Ling Qingjue was half-kneeling on the ground, doing something Meng Shu couldn't make out.

He knew Meng Shu was back but didn't bother to look. Without even turning his head, he said coldly, "So you finally remember to come back?"

Meng Shu let out a wry smile, walked over to him, and crouched down beside him. "Sorry about that," he said.

He asked, "Are you planting new flowers?"

    Ling Qingjue nodded. "Mm."

Meng Shu occasionally helped him water the flowers. Looking closely, he noticed several plants were missing from the pots.

These were Ling Qingjue's prized plants; he never touched them otherwise.

He was replanting new seedlings, tamping the soil with a small shovel. "The day before yesterday, someone strayed into the Monster Beast Forest and was torn apart by a monster."

"So you brought him back to life?" Meng Shu turned to look at him.

"Mm," Ling Qingjue said. "His body was gone, so I crafted a new body for him."

Pausing for a moment, he lifted his chin slightly with pride. "He was only 1.6 meters tall before; I gave him a 1.7-meter body."

"You can change someone's appearance?" Meng Shu was shocked.

"It's a body I created; why can't I change it?" Ling Qingjue finished planting the flowers and stood up, his expression was somewhat languid.

"He wanted to change too; his soul was fluttering around my ear, clamoring for me to make him taller. So noisy it was annoying."

Meng Shu was even more surprised. "You can see the souls of the dead?"

Ling Qingjue looked at him like he was an idiot. "Everyone who masters resurrection magic can see souls; otherwise, how would they merge soul and body?"

"That's amazing..." Meng Shu couldn't help but exclaim. "You're incredible!"

Ling Qingjue pursed his lips modestly. "I'm from the Cat Clan, born with the ability to see spiritual bodies. In the resurrection business, I have an innate advantage."

Meng Shu kept nodding. "That's so amazing!"

He looked down and noticed another pot was empty. If he remembered correctly, that pot held the Resurrection Magnolia.

    "You missed one."

Ling Qingjue shrugged, a trace of irritation crossing his handsome face. "I haven't found that flower."

The Resurrection Magnolia can only be obtained by killing the Resurrection Beast. Ling Qingjue cannot use Attack Magic, so hunting the Resurrection Beast requires a lot of preparation in advance.

This cat of his was too lazy and hadn't gotten around to setting out yet.

Meng Shu stroked his chin thoughtfully. "What tier is the Resurrection Beast?"

    "Tier four."

"I'll go get one for you." Meng Shu knew he didn't want to go out, and finally found a chance to curry favor. He quickly leaned in, wagging his tail. "Just tier four? I can get you ten thousand in no time!"

But Ling Qingjue was amused by him.

The young man lowered his head, his nose nearly touching Meng Shu's face.

Meng Shu's Adam's apple bobbed nervously.

Then he heard Ling Qingjue say, "In your dreams."

"The drop rate for the Resurrection Magnolia is only one in ten thousand. You'd have to kill ten thousand to get one. A whole herd usually only has three hundred."

    A one-in-ten-thousand drop rate!

No wonder Ling Qingjue charged so much for resurrection!

The raw material was super, extremely hard to obtain.

So back then, when he sat on and killed Ling Qingjue's flower, Ling Qingjue only charged him a hundred thousand—truly an act of great kindness. Even God would praise him for being kind.

Meng Shu was dumbfounded, frightened by the probability. "One in ten thousand... How did you get it before?"

Ling Qingjue raised an eyebrow and repeated, "A little trick."

    "What trick?"

"Genocide." Ling Qingjue said this gently. "When I see a herd, I wipe it out directly, covering a large area. Eventually something will drop."

He frowned again, complaining with slight dissatisfaction, "Can't they just kill themselves? I have to do it every time—it's a waste of my time."

He said it as casually as if ordering takeout but having to go downstairs to pick it up himself—wiping out a whole herd in a snap.

    Devil!

    That's a real devil!

Wiping out an entire clan yet complaining they didn't commit suicide!

Meng Shu's jaw nearly dropped to the ground. "Cat, you..."

No wonder he couldn't use attack magic. If he were allowed to use it without restraint, then when he quarreled with the neighbor's swearing Cow Cat, he might wipe out the whole town in anger!

That Cow Cat's background was unclear.

It was said to be a stray cat that suddenly appeared in town recently.

It was very good at rolling, acting cute, and charming. Taking advantage of humans not understanding cat language, it would swear in a strained voice, while humans thought it was being well-behaved.

Ling Qingjue's neighbor was a young girl, naive and inexperienced in the evilness of cats.

As the saying goes, pretend for five minutes, enjoy a lifetime of wealth.

The Cow Cat was adopted by the girl. The two families lived close. Whenever the Cow Cat had time, it would come to Ling Qingjue's door to curse. Couldn't understand it, but it felt very vulgar.

Thinking of that clueless cow cat, Meng Shu couldn't help but shiver.

Ling Qingjue's eyes held an innocent cruelty, and he gave a strange smile: "Hmm, what's wrong, afraid of me?"

    "No, it's not that..."

Meng Shu pressed his forehead and said with a bitter smile: "I'm worried about that cow cat..."

Was Ling Qingjue going to dismember it?

He had really taken in a handful.

"I won't touch it." Ling Qingjue saw through his thoughts and scoffed, "A dumb cat that can't even transform—I won't even bother with it."

"What kind of reason is that?"

He didn't believe Ling Qingjue could be that kind-hearted.

Ling Qingjue sighed, "I knew I couldn't hide it from you."

He raised his hand and gently placed it on top of Meng Shu's head, speaking stiffly and robotically: "Once you get your affection level up to forty, I'll teach you the Cat Clan language, and you can ask it yourself."

Meng Shu rarely had his head touched—There's an old saying: never touch a woman's feet or a man's head.

Other than his mom, no one had ever ruffled his hair.

Only someone really close would do that.

He couldn't help but wonder—was this a hint? Or did Ling Qingjue, being a cat, naturally like having his head petted, and so also liked petting others' heads?

"Is it going to be very hard to learn?" Meng Shu's mind had stopped working, and his face was burning, stammering, "I'm really bad at learning. I might... I might not be able to learn it. Don't think less of me."

When he was in school, he couldn't even remember whether the alphabet had 24 or 26 letters.

Other people could at least scrape into a community college with some effort, but Meng Shu got a headache just from hearing the teacher talk and couldn't last a minute.

Meng Shu knew he had no talent for learning, so he left school early and started working.

But Ling Qingjue said, "It's not hard. There's a Cat Clan language book—you only need to read it once, and the rules will help you learn it."

In their world, any language could be learned by just reading one book, and you'd master it instantly.

As long as you had enough language books, anyone could master all languages.

Of course, the dog language that Meng Shu had invented was incomprehensible to everyone.
