Chapter 67 Like a Resentful Husband
by 李怀沙Chapter 67: Like a Jealous Lover
Meng Shu spoke of the past in a light and calm tone, as if telling someone else's story. "Anyway, everyone called me a bad guy, but I myself think I'm still a decent person."
He tilted his head, a small smile playing on his lips. "What about you? Do you think I'm very bad?"
Ling Qingjue was silent for a moment. "Don't you hate them?"
"Hating someone is just too draining. I'd rather use that energy to live my life well." Meng Shu shook his head slowly. "If I started hating, there'd be too many people to hate. I'd end up hating the whole world."
He leaned close to Ling Qingjue, his face almost pressed against Ling Qingjue's. "So, you say you're a bad cat. I don't believe it. A bad cat wouldn't go easy on me."
Ling Qingjue stared unblinkingly into his eyes—clear and bright, with sharply defined whites and pupils.
"What if I'm not as good as you imagine? Would you still pursue me?"
Meng Shu was slightly surprised. This cat was already as mean as they come; how much worse could it be?
Did Ling Qingjue think his image in his heart was really that good?
It had long since collapsed.
If not for Meng Shu's secret cat person trait, he would have jumped up and scolded him back.
"Hell yeah, I already bet on it." Meng Shu said it so straightforwardly, without any guile.
Ling Qingjue got even angrier. "So you're only pursuing me because of the bet?"
Meng Shu chuckled helplessly. "Also 'cause I like you."
This cat was a pain in the ass, but also adorable as hell.
These words made Ling Qingjue's expression soften. Since the human liked him so much, he'd deign to share his past.
It wasn't because he liked the human; it was just about reciprocating.
Ling Qingjue thought for a long time, then finally revealed a faint smile, a strange chill seeping into his eyes. "Do you really want to know my past?"
"Yes." Meng Shu was resolute. "I don't believe you're a bad guy... uh, bad cat."
"I can tell you." Ling Qingjue's smile was bone-chilling.
"But only if you keep pursuing me. If you dare to give up halfway, I promise you'll die a horrible death."
Meng Shu was taken aback. Was he saying he couldn't quit?
Ling Qingjue's voice was like the serpent in the Garden of Eden, luring him toward disaster. "If you really want to know, then agree to my request."
He didn't think anyone could ever love a bad cat like him.
Meng Shu was dazed for a long time before saying, "But I was gonna keep pursuing you anyway. Even if you hadn't told me, I would have done the same."
"Good. Your choice." Ling Qingjue smiled again. He reached out, his slightly cool fingers pressing against the back of Meng Shu's neck. With a little force, he pressed Meng Shu's head towards him, his voice low. "Come here."
Meng Shu's heart skipped a beat, and his eyelids fluttered nervously.
He felt like a lamb walking into the lion's den.
Ling Qingjue noticed the stiffness in his body and snorted. "You can still back out."
"No regrets!" Meng Shu quickly defended himself. "It's just that what you said sounded weird..."
"Are you afraid of me?"
Meng Shu refused to admit it. "No way!"
"You're scared of me right now." Ling Qingjue was very certain. "Am I that terrifying?"
"If you weren't holding my neck and grinning all creepily, I probably wouldn't be so... nervous."
Ling Qingjue's eyes were deep and dark, almost pleading. "Then don't be afraid of me in the future, okay?"
To say that good looks have their advantages—even knowing it was a trap, Meng Shu still fell headlong into it, dazed: "Fine."
"Come." Ling Qingjue moved a little closer. "Close your eyes."
Their foreheads touched.
...
"Entering special storyline."
"Entering soul-body state."
...
Meng Shu opened his eyes and eagerly examined his body. He looked himself over—it was still his own body, which made him a little disappointed.
He had thought he would possess little Ling Qingjue.
Turning his head, the adult Ling Qingjue was standing right beside him, arms crossed, one eyebrow raised. "What are you feeling?"
Meng Shu stood up straight. "Nothing..."
Ling Qingjue said, "We're in soul form, not possessing anyone. This is the memory world; no one can see us."
"In Xiao Guai's memory, I possessed him."
Ling Qingjue sneered. "It's too weak to pull you out. I'm no weakling."
Meng Shu was great at buttering up. "Of course, our cat is a genius, capable of anything. Keep it up in the future!"
They were standing by a stream. Meng Shu crouched down; the water was crystal clear, fish gliding together, the surface sparkling.
"The fish in this river are really plump," Ling Qingjue said, walking over to him. "This is Cat Island. This river is called Three Fish River."
"Why is it called Three Fish River?"
"'Cause each cat can only catch three fish a day."
Ling Qingjue paused. "The fish here are too delicious. Without the rule, they'd be wiped out."
Meng Shu was speechless and then laughed. The scenery on Cat Island was all natural, untouched by humans. All the residents were cats. Even most who had learned to transform stayed in cat form, napping in boxes.
"I used to come here to catch fish when I was little," Ling Qingjue said. "One time I caught an extra one. My mom found out and whipped me, saying I was the Young Master and acting greedy, embarrassing the cats."
Meng Shu was tongue-tied. "How could she hit you? It's just a fish... I'll catch tons for you later."
"This fish is only found in this stream. It doesn't exist anywhere else."
Meng Shu gasped and comforted him, "It's okay. When we find Cat Island someday, I'll catch them for you."
Ling Qingjue felt his heart fill up. He nodded and said solemnly, "Okay."
After waiting by the stream for just a few minutes, Ling Qingjue said, "Here I am."
Meng Shu asked, "Who's coming?"
"My younger self," Ling Qingjue pointed into the distance, "coming to catch fish."
Meng Shu was itching to see. Was he finally going to see Ling Qingjue's true form?
He craned his neck and looked over expectantly, then his face instantly fell.
Ling Qingjue had already transformed into human form, with black hair and green eyes, wearing a loose white T-shirt that covered most of his body.
He looked like an eight- or nine-year-old kid, carrying a basket. Even as a kid, he had that proud, cocky, cold look.
Meng Shu wasn't happy. "Why didn't you stay as a kitten?"
Ling Qingjue said, "Do you want the truth or a lie?"
"I wanna hear both."
"The lie is that human form is more convenient."
Ling Qingjue coughed, and said somewhat awkwardly, "The truth is that I learned to shift when I was three, so I'd show off to the other cats every day. Yeah, just to show off."
The cat walked to the lakeside, caught three fish skillfully, then packed up to go home.
The longer Meng Shu looked, the more fond he grew. "You were so cute when you were little."
"...Not good-looking now?"
"Not cute at all." Meng Shu said honestly, "Now you look like some bitter guy whose wife ran off with the kid and left you ten million in debt."
Ling Qingjue: "?"
