Chapter 152: Back to the Past
by 李怀沙Chapter 152: Back to the Past
The dark red blood kept jolting Ling Qingjue's nerves, and he totally forgot that this was just a memory—he couldn't change anything, and no one would notice him.
He ran to the ticket office and yelled at the half-asleep ticket clerk, "Help him!"
The ticket clerk didn't react.
He went to other passersby, speaking urgently, "Help him, help him—"
No matter how hard he tried, no one around paid him any attention.
Ling Qingjue, who had always gotten away with anything, got a taste of failure.
This memory never ended. Ling Qingjue wandered around helplessly in the station, trying to ask for help from every person he saw.
No one listened to him.
He felt something called fear—this was probably the scariest moment of his life.
The hairs on his neck stood up, like he'd fallen into an ice pit, surrounded by infinite cold.
Would Meng Shu die? Why didn't anyone notice him?
Suddenly, he understood why this was Meng Shu's "fear"—the worry for his mother, the person he loved disappearing without a trace. How could he not be afraid?
After walking around, Ling Qingjue returned to Meng Shu's side, out of breath. He crouched down to check if Meng Shu was still breathing—it was really weak.
He really could die...
The memory space started crumbling. Ling Qingjue's expression grew more solemn. No, this memory was actually falling apart!
Which meant the Meng Shu in this memory would truly die.
A chill went down Ling Qingjue's spine, and his voice shook. "Meng Shu... Why? Isn't this just a memory? Didn't you survive later on?"
The memory space crumbled and cracked bit by bit. Meng Shu lay on the ground, his chest rising and falling less and less, until finally there was no movement.
Meng Shu would die. He was going to die when he was fourteen.
Ling Qingjue had always led a smooth life. He possessed the topmost talent, born on Cat Island, the utopia of kittens. Even if he was chosen as the Demon King and accidentally destroyed his own home, his parents did everything they could to make up for his mistakes.
He'd never known bitterness.
But there were things even he couldn't do.
Ling Qingjue stared at Meng Shu, then suddenly smiled, his eyes crinkling. "No, there's nothing I can't achieve."
"I can have whatever I want—isn't changing history just that simple?"
"So that's it." Ling Qingjue twisted his lips into a strange smile. "I won't allow anything in this world to be beyond me. If there is, I'll annihilate it."
He stood up, and a huge magic circle formed under his feet.
The memory continued to collapse. Ling Qingjue tore open a rift in space with his bare hands, glanced back at Meng Shu, and smiled. "Wait for me."
He strode into the space rift.
Everything spun around him. In the real world, the weather suddenly changed, the violent storm growing fiercer, and the Law's golden form flickered.
Ling Qingjue had originally been standing in the room, eyes closed, entering Meng Shu's memories via soul possession.
But a minute ago, he had vanished into thin air.
The Law dropped to his knees, clutching his chest, the golden light around him dimming. "No, someone has traveled back to the past timeline—"
Lake was shocked. "Did Ling Qingjue do that?"
"It must be him." The Law spat out a mouthful of golden blood, almost crying, "What have I done wrong? Why is he trying to destroy my world..."
"If he can travel back, why doesn't he just bring Meng Shu back to life?" Lake asked in confusion.
"Going back in time comes at a huge cost, and you cannot change history, or the whole world will fall apart." The Law shook his head weakly. "He can't do that. The more he changes in the past, the greater the backlash he suffers. Directly resurrecting a person already seriously violates the Law. He can only exchange his life for someone else's—he'd have to die too."
"Then why did he suddenly travel back? What is he planning to do?" Lake grew tense. "Out of nowhere, he decides to change history!"
The Law gritted his teeth. "That bastard, don't let him destroy my world! He didn't build this world, so he doesn't care if he wrecks it! I have to stop him!"
With that, the Law disappeared too.
Only Lake was left, cowering in the room, not daring to move.
...
After stepping out from the Law's influence, Ling Qingjue did not hesitate. He quickly found Meng Shu in a corner of the station, just as he remembered.
Each step he took felt like needles pricking his skin.
This was the Law pushing back against him after the time jump.
Ling Qingjue clearly felt his power draining away. By breaking spacetime, the Law shamelessly leeched off his power to fight against him!
His expression unchanged, he said coldly, "Hope you choke on it."
The Law, hiding in the shadows and drawing on his power, spoke weakly, "By traveling through time and space, you've essentially stabbed me. I need to ensure my own power isn't affected. You have so much mana, taking a couple of sips from you—don't be so stingy."
"Don't mess with my plans." Ling Qingjue couldn't be bothered to argue. He bent down and lifted Meng Shu into his arms.
As soon as he held him, he felt the prominent bones under his hands.
Ling Qingjue was stunned. How could he be so thin...
The Law said, "You want to save him?"
"Get your eyes checked if you're blind. Why bother with such stupid questions? Annoying the cat." Ling Qingjue retorted irritably, his hand slowly sliding down Meng Shu's shoulder as a faint green glow appeared in his palm.
He was examining the wounds on Meng Shu's body.
The Law said quietly, "You will suffer the backlash... Changing history—what you have to pay is too much."
Ling Qingjue still had no good expression. "None of your damn business."
"...I'm just kindly warning you."
"Who doesn't know that you Laws are full of tricks?" Ling Qingjue was exasperated. "Shut up, or I'll tear you apart right now."
The Law went silent.
Feeling wronged.
It really was just a friendly reminder!
After briefly examining Meng Shu's condition, besides excessive blood loss, he was also severely malnourished. Ling Qingjue furrowed his brow and touched Meng Shu's forehead, which was scorching hot.
"What a fool," Ling Qingjue said in a low voice, gently holding his shoulders. "If I hadn't come to find you, you would have died at fourteen. How could you be so foolish?"
Because he was forcibly altering history, even a simple wound required Ling Qingjue to expend a tremendous amount of magical power.
Vast magical energy flowed continuously into Meng Shu's body, and the wound healed at a very slow pace.
Ling Qingjue's complexion visibly deteriorated. The price of changing history was too heavy—merely treating a wound actually nearly drained all his magical power!
