Chapter 71: Second brother, there are bad guys
byChapter 71: Second Brother, There Are Bad People
Fu Cheng had just finished his medical check-up and hadn’t even had the chance to get into the car when he was informed that his son and daughter had nearly come to harm at the amusement park.
Holding his phone, the veins on the back of his knuckled hand bulged prominently.
His lips pressed into a tight line as he sat in the car and said grimly to the person on the other end of the call, “Thank you. Please make sure to keep those children there. I want to thank them in person.”
With that, Fu Cheng hung up and said sternly to the driver, “To the city hospital.”
Fu Yuchen, sitting in the car behind, had no idea what was happening.
When he noticed the car wasn’t heading toward the Fu residence but instead toward the city center, his handsome brows furrowed. “What’s going on?”
The driver, equally confused, replied, “I’m not sure. Father said we’re going to the city hospital first.”
A sharp pang of unease struck Fu Yuchen as he turned to look out the window, his eyes darkened with worry.
When the father and son were ushered into the children’s ward and saw the siblings lying in the double room, their faces turned stormy.
“The doctor said the Third Young Master and the Fourth Miss are fine—just unconscious from inhaling ether. Fortunately, neither suffered ether poisoning, and they’ll wake up soon.”
Fu Cheng raised a hand to stop his assistant from continuing.
“You may leave.”
The city hospital wasn’t the Fu family’s private facility, and the bustling surroundings might cause unnecessary attention.
Fu Cheng still couldn’t walk independently.
As he steered his wheelchair to the bedside and saw his youngest son and daughter lying pale and unconscious, the man who seldom lost his temper in years clenched his fist and slammed it against the armrest of his wheelchair.
“Dad, calm down first. Let’s investigate this thoroughly before you act,” Fu Yuchen said hesitantly, standing beside his father.
He had never done this before—even when his father had raged and smashed things in the past, he had only watched coldly from the sidelines.
If not for his sister teaching him so much, he might have remained as detached, or even grown more extreme.
So when he saw his sister’s peaceful sleeping face on the hospital bed, the fury in his heart was no less than his father’s.
The timing was too coincidental.
First, his father’s car accident left him comatose, nearly toppling the Fu empire.
Now, just as his father had awakened, his sister had almost been taken in public.
If not for those brave young people...
Fu Yuchen’s throat worked as his eyes darkened.
If not for them, he didn’t dare imagine what misfortune might have befallen his sister.
Just the thought of Zhi-Zhi locked in a dark room, crying herself hoarse, made him feel as if a giant hand were squeezing his heart, suffocating him.
Fu Cheng’s eyes burned with rage, faint red veins surfacing. “I’ll get to the bottom of this. You stay with Siyuan and Zhi-Zhi.”
He picked up his daughter’s small hand resting outside the blanket and squeezed her soft palm, his scowl deepening.
In the past, he hadn’t cared if someone dared cross him—they were just clowns in his eyes.
But now that they had laid hands on Zhi-Zhi, Fu Cheng, who hadn’t taken action in years, would show no mercy.
Fu Yuchen remained in the ward, watching as his father wheeled himself out.
The room fell silent, though noise drifted in from the hallway.
Gazing down at his sister’s serene sleeping face, as if she were oblivious to everything, Fu Yuchen closed his hand around hers.
The usually detached young man, who had never known what it meant to feel his eyes grow hot, felt his eyes sting for the first time.
By the time Fu Jingyi heard the news, it was nearly quitting time.
He had a global conference call to attend, but upon learning of his sister’s ordeal, he canceled it immediately. The usually composed man bolted from the office in a panic, ignoring his assistant’s calls behind him.
The Fu Corporation headquarters was located in the heart of the city, making travel convenient.
The city hospital wasn’t far, and driving would have been more cumbersome.
So passersby witnessed a tall, upright young man sprinting down the sidewalk, disregarding traffic lights and earning honks and curses from drivers.
When Fu Jingyi finally reached the children’s ward at the city hospital, he stopped outside to compose himself before entering—only to see the Little Dumpling he’d been worried about the entire way, hugging a fish-shaped cotton candy, her little face all scrunched up.
“Second Brother, where’s Third Brother?”
Her pretty dress had been replaced by a cartoon-patterned hospital gown.
Just waking up, Little Dumpling peered around anxiously when she realized it wasn’t her Third Brother beside her, but her Second Brother.
“There were bad people! Third Brother fell asleep. Did Second Brother find him?”
Even with the fish-shaped cotton candy Second Brother had just handed her, she wriggled a hand free to grab his fingers.
Little Dumpling couldn’t lie—her face showed her urgency, as if she wanted Second Brother to carry her to find Third Brother that very moment.
“Third Brother is fine. He’s at home. Zhi-Zhi doesn’t need to worry.”
The whole afternoon, Fu Yuchen had kept asking the doctors if his sister had suffered ether poisoning—otherwise, why was she still unconscious when Fu Siyuan had already woken up?
The doctors assured him that Little Dumpling had inhaled more ether, and due to her weaker constitution, she’d be out longer.
He had sat by her bedside for so long that the fish-shaped cotton candy Fu Siyuan had bought before leaving was nearly melted by the time she finally woke.
When Little Dumpling heard that Third Brother was safe and already home, her still-pale face finally perked up slightly.
Playing with the candy wrapper, she looked up at Second Brother. “Did Third Brother buy this for Zhi-Zhi?”
Even though she had just woken from unconsciousness, her pale little face still showed signs of shock, but her jet-black eyes shone brilliantly.
Especially when Second Brother nodded, she immediately beamed.
“Zhi-Zhi loves, loves the fishy candy! Zhi-Zhi wants to thank Third Brother.”
Fu Yuchen didn’t mention that this fish-shaped cotton candy was something Fu Siyuan had gone back to the amusement park to buy for her after waking up.
He had passed it to him silently before returning home to face the consequences.
For disobeying their father and taking Little Dumpling to the amusement park, almost getting her kidnapped.
Even if their father forgave him, Fu Siyuan would never forgive himself.
"Second Brother, when will Third Brother come back?"
Lifting her head from her fish-shaped cotton candy, the little one reached out for a hug. "Second Brother, does your foot still hurt?"
Fu Yuchen shook his head with a light chuckle, scooping his sister into his arms. He gently pinched her cheek and spoke softly.
"Zhi-Zhi, you’re not mad, are you? Third Brother took you out to play and put you in danger."
Just imagining the scene of his sister being harmed at the amusement park made Fu Yuchen’s blood run cold.
"Not angry. Third Brother took Zhi-Zhi on a pony ride and bought Zhi-Zhi the small fish. It was the bad guys who hurt Third Brother. Zhi-Zhi got so mad she yelled, 'Help!'"
Her little face crumpled in anger, her tiny fists clenched tight.
She’d been furious when she saw Third Brother being hurt by the bad guys.
"Third Brother’s mouth was bleeding. Did it hurt, Third Brother?"
Peering up at Second Brother over her shoulder, the little one was filled with worry for Third Brother.
She was too sweet for her own good.
Fu Yuchen’s eyes briefly closed before he shook his head gently. "Third Brother wouldn’t mind the pain as long as he knows Zhi-Zhi is safe."
