Chapter 016 Paternity Test
byChapter 016 Paternity Test
The assistant Su Jun arranged, Sun Xuewen, moved quickly, arriving in Jiangdong by noon. Based on the phone number provided by Su Mingyue, he called to explain his purpose and then met Li Pushu.
Sun Xuewen was also stunned by her beauty at first sight; he had never seen anyone as beautiful, and she looked quite similar to Mrs. An, making it highly probable she was the actual eldest daughter of the Su family, though confirmation was still needed.
"Hello, Miss Li. My name is Sun Xuewen, Secretary to President Su. As I explained over the phone, there is a strong possibility that you are the eldest daughter of the Su family. President Su would like to ask you to accompany me back to Jiangbei. If there is a misunderstanding, the Su family will compensate you for your time."
Sun Xuewen’s meaning was clear: President Su wanted to go back to Jiangbei and do a paternity test to have concrete results, having already made one mistake by raising someone else’s child for over twenty years; this time, they would only believe with solid evidence.
"Sure. I’ll go to Jiangbei with you." Li Pushu smiled lightly as she nodded, tucking her hair behind her ear. "But I heard that the Su family already has a daughter who was raised for over twenty years, taking my place. Secretary Sun, if I turn out to be the real eldest daughter, what do you think Mr. Su and his wife—my biological parents, that is—would probably do?"
This question caught Sun Xuewen off guard. Either way, he couldn't answer without risk. If this young lady really was the eldest daughter of the Su family and he might work under her in the future, he had to be careful with his words. But the results weren’t out yet.
"Miss Li, you're joking. I’m just President Su’s secretary, handling work matters. As for President Su’s personal thoughts and family affairs, I have no idea what President Su and Mrs. An are thinking." Sun Xuewen smiled, deflecting the question, then added ambiguously, "However, based on my understanding of President Su, he is kind but demanding at work and values blood ties highly."
Li Pushu got the general idea. This President Su valued blood relations more, but he wouldn’t drive the raised child away either. Such a person either valued relationships or interests; based on what she heard, the latter seemed more likely.
"To be honest, I never expected such a melodramatic thing to happen to me. There’s something I can’t figure out, Secretary Sun. How did the two babies end up swapped back then? Mrs. An, being a wealthy wife, must have had many attendants and caregivers before and after childbirth." Li Pushu feigned confusion.
Sun Xuewen was around thirty years old, wearing glasses and looking gentle and amiable.
At his age, it was unlikely he would know the situation back then; he was just a child and wasn’t part of the Su family then. However, Ye Sui said that Zhao Jin, who had returned to Jiangbei to investigate the Su family on his behalf, had sent information that Sun Xuewen’s mother was one of the nannies who had taken care of An Lanshu—President Su’s wife, suspected of being Li Pushu’s biological mother—around the time of childbirth. Shortly after the child was born, Sun Xuewen’s mother quit and left the Su family to return to her hometown.
They suspected that the person who swapped the babies was Sun Xuewen’s mother, and the fact that Sun Xuewen now worked at the Su family’s company seemed too coincidental.
Sun Xuewen’s expression stiffened briefly but quickly vanished. He looked surprised, then resignedly amused. "Miss Li, you're joking. That was twenty-two years ago. How would I know?"
"True, look at me, going off on random guesses." Li Pushu also laughed lightly. "Oh, by the way, for this trip, my boyfriend will accompany me. He’s concerned about my safety. Secretary Sun, that shouldn’t be a problem, right?"
From the moment he entered, Sun Xuewen had noticed Ye Sui’s commanding presence, and even though he hadn’t spoken, his protective stance toward Li Pushu was obvious. He had already guessed their relationship, so he nodded. "Of course." He had no reason to refuse.
The man was good-looking, but according to President Su’s intentions, if Li Pushu really was the eldest daughter of the Su family, she would have to stay in Jiangbei. He would likely try to separate them. For marriage, she should find a suitable match from a wealthy family, not a nobody with nothing. Even if he had some means, it was nothing compared to the Su family.
"It’s still early for the airport. Secretary Sun, you can rest at the hotel first. We’ll meet up when it’s time." Li Pushu picked up her bag, smiled at Sun Xuewen, and took Ye Sui’s arm as they left the cafe.
Sun Xuewen adjusted his glasses, a thoughtful look in his eyes.
What did Miss Li mean by that question? Did she already know something? That shouldn’t be possible.
A person from Jiangdong who had just learned about her background couldn’t possibly have the means to investigate the past.
Outside the cafe, it was hot, so they sat in the car with the air conditioning on. Li Pushu held some snacks and speculated boldly, "I saw it just now. When I asked him, Secretary Sun’s expression was a little unnatural for a moment. I think he must know something from his mother; otherwise, he wouldn’t have reacted that way."
Unfortunately, the Sun family lived far away, and the nanny had returned to her hometown. Even if they wanted to investigate, they couldn’t get results quickly. They could find out a lot about the Su family now because the Su family were distant relatives of the Jiangbei Zhao family. The Su family had relied on this connection to gain support and reach their current position.
The current head of the Jiangbei Zhao family was married to a woman named An Lanzhi, who was a stepsister of An Lanshu. An Lanzhi was born to the first wife, while An Lanshu was born the year after their stepmother married into the An family. They were only two years apart, and they married around the same time—one to the ordinary Su family, and the other, fortunately, into the Zhao family.
This was the message Zhao Jin sent after returning to Jiangbei yesterday with the "big favor" from Ye Sui. Since Ye Sui was in Jiangdong, the two families, though related, were far apart and didn’t know everything. Besides, who would go out of their way to check such things? After returning to Jiangbei, it was easier to investigate the Su family.
"Never mind what he thinks. We’ll know the truth in a couple of days." Ye Sui saw Li Pushu reach for a cold drink and stopped her. "Shushu, your period is coming. You can’t have cold drinks. Be good and bear with it for a bit."
Even though Li Pushu didn’t have menstrual cramps, she still experienced some discomfort and a dull, dragging ache during her period. Ye Sui kept track of her cycle and paid close attention to these health issues. When it came to health, he was very strict.
"Fine." Li Pushu thought about it and gave up on the cold drink, though she was a little frustrated that she couldn’t have what she wanted.
"Let’s go shopping. The jewelry store you liked had new arrivals of those accessories. Let’s go use the card." Ye Sui stroked her hair and smiled, knowing how to cheer her up.
Although Li Pushu now lacked none of these—she had several mountains of gold and boxes of jewelry—there was a different feeling in strolling through a store and buying whatever caught her eye with a grand gesture. Shopping and spending money could bring a joyful feeling that swept away worries.
Li Pushu’s eyes lit up. “Let’s go, let’s go. Hmph, I’m going to max out your card!”
That said, all of Ye Sui’s cards were in her hands; when she wanted to use them was just a matter of mood.
*
At six thirty in the evening, they arrived in Jiangbei.
Su Jun had rested during the day and was already on his way to the hospital. He was in the ward, in decent spirits.
With him were An Lanshu and Su Mingyue. Though they tried hard to hide it, subtle signs of anxiety and panic were still visible if one looked closely.
Su Jun managed the Su family and was certainly not someone easily fooled by a few words. Since the car accident hadn’t killed him, once he knew the truth, he would definitely investigate.
Even if An Lanshu wanted to stop it, it was already too late. She was nothing more than a wealthy lady without real power; her reach was limited.
If she couldn’t stop it, Su Mingyue, no matter how anxious, had no way to prevent it either. If not for Su Jun’s accident, the truth could have been concealed, and she would have had enough time to eliminate the threat. Unfortunately, the plan changed too quickly, catching both her and An Lanshu off guard.
Knock, knock, knock—
At the sound of knocking, Sun Xuewen entered, followed by two young people. Everyone’s gaze turned toward them.
The young woman was so beautiful she didn’t seem real. Standing beside the tall, handsome man, they made an indescribably perfect couple, brightening the entire ward.
Su Jun was pleased with her appearance—she looked about forty percent like his wife, a sure thing. Her temperament was also presentable, no signs of an ugly duckling. But when he saw Ye Sui, his brow slightly furrowed.
He already knew from Sun Xuewen’s information that this man was Li Pushu’s boyfriend—a young man with some achievements, but still far from meeting the Su family’s standards.
Su Mingyue had only seen photos before, but now seeing the real person, her eyes widened. She glared at Li Pushu with envy and resentment. When Li Pushu glanced at her, she quickly lowered her eyes to hide her emotions. She couldn’t show her true feelings in front of Su Jun, but the worry in her heart made her almost bite through her lips, her facial muscles twitching slightly.
“Mr. Su, Mrs. An, this is Miss Li Pushu, and this is Miss Li’s boyfriend, Mr. Ye.” Sun Xuewen introduced them, then stepped aside, not interfering with the boss’s family matters.
“You must be Pushu. Come in, let me have a good look at you.” An Lanshu clenched her fist, composed herself, walked over, and forced a loving smile, her eyes moist and emotional. “It’s good you’re back, good you’re back. You’ve suffered all these years.”
Su Jun also said, “We all welcome you home.”
As for Ye Sui, he deliberately ignored him, showing no intention of greeting.
“Shushu, may I call you that? From now on, we’ll be sisters. How wonderful—I’ve always wanted a younger sister, and now my wish has come true.” Su Mingyue also spoke. Before she went crazy, she was quite good at pretending, having grown up with An Lanshu. As long as she wasn’t too foolish, she would have learned some tactics.
Li Pushu took in their different reactions. Few were sincere. Mrs. An’s insincere words were particularly thought-provoking. She opened her hands. “Don’t rush to claim kinship. Let’s do the paternity test first, then see the results. Otherwise, if we get the identity wrong again, it’ll be troublesome.”
As she spoke, she glanced at Su Mingyue, whose face stiffened. Both Su Jun and An Lanshu fell silent. They hadn’t expected Li Pushu to be different from what they imagined—no excitement, no anticipation.
But Su Jun meant the same thing; he just hadn’t found the right moment to bring it up. Now that Li Pushu mentioned it herself, he nodded. “Indeed, we need to be cautious. Secretary Sun, bring the doctor in to collect blood samples for the test.”
Sun Xuewen had stayed specifically for this reason. “Yes, Mr. Su.” He went out of the ward and quickly returned with a doctor.
The hospital’s medical equipment and physician resources were top-notch in Jiangbei. With the Su family’s status, they could expedite things by spending money, and the results would be ready within three hours.
Before the results came out, Li Pushu wasn’t going to wait there. She and Ye Sui left the hospital to meet a friend.
It was naturally Zhao Jin’s invitation. He was almost like a co-host, and because of the “big gift” Ye Sui had given him, he had gained face in the Zhao family and received high praise. He was in an excellent mood.
He had originally planned to express his gratitude when they returned to Jiangdong, but knowing they were in Jiangbei today, he insisted on treating them to a meal.
He was determined to be sworn brothers with Ye Sui—even a peach garden oath of sworn brotherhood would do! So he would also value his brother’s girlfriend.
After learning about this matter, Zhao Jin sighed at how melodramatic it was. But if Ye Sui’s girlfriend truly was the Su family’s eldest daughter, then by some connection, he could be considered her cousin. In turn, Ye Sui would be his brother-in-law.
The bond was strong! He was overjoyed.
