Xu Nanyan, hearing him say this, looked up at him.
Zhou Chiyan’s expression showed a brief moment of hesitation, then his attractive eyebrows knotted slightly, "Did you really break up with your senior?"
Xu Nanyan was momentarily startled, then realizing his cautious manner, she couldn’t help but laugh, "Why are you so careful? Breaking up is a common thing. You don’t think it was because of you, do you?"
"Isn't it... because of me?" Zhou Chiyan almost instinctively asked, his tone carrying a hint of embarrassment.
He hadn’t expected her to react this way, different from what he had anticipated, but it didn’t matter. He said softly, "Actually, after I got drunk that day, I vaguely remember answering a call..."
He racked his brain, though his face showed difficulty, "I don’t really remember what I said, but I think I heard your name, Senior. So, I was worried, did your senior misunderstand something?"
Xu Nanyan then shook her head, "It's not related to you, it was just an issue between him and me. You don't need to feel guilty."
Zhou Chiyan nodded, reassured by her affirmation, as if a weight had been lifted from his heart.
However, thinking back to his drunken state that day, he couldn’t help but ask, "Didn’t I do anything strange after I got drunk last time?"
Was he really unaware of any strange happenings?
Xu Nanyan suddenly pressed her lips together in a smile, resting her chin on her hand and murmuring softly, "It wasn’t anything strange, just that you kept holding onto me and wouldn’t let go after you got drunk..."
Before she could finish, Zhou Chiyan’s cheeks instantly reddened, looking like a bashful newlywed, stuttering without knowing what to say.
"Did I really do that?" He seemed uncertain, his fingers on the table involuntarily curling up, "How come... I don’t remember at all?"
Xu Nanyan couldn't help but laugh, her smile seemingly tinged with a hint of teasing. She nodded and continued, "That's not all, you even cried and called me your mom, insisting that I acknowledge you as..."
Such things should not be said recklessly.
Zhou Chiyan's expression stiffened for a moment. He had only intended to make casual conversation, but she dared to fabricate such a story.
Before she could finish, Zhou Chiyan instinctively covered her lips with his hand, his eyes filled with embarrassment, "Senior, stop teasing me, how could I possibly... do something like that?"
Xu Nanyan couldn't help but laugh out loud, her warm breath inadvertently spraying onto his palm. Zhou Chiyan's palm felt ticklish, uncomfortably so. As he was about to lower his hand, Xu Nanyan tilted her head back.
Zhou Chiyan's hand awkwardly hung in mid-air.
Xu Nanyan, as if nothing had happened, chuckled and said, "Actually, you just slept after getting drunk that day. No matter how much I called, you wouldn’t wake up, let alone have the energy to do anything else."
"Okay, let's not talk about this anymore. Don't worry, my breakup with He Yanzhou was due to problems between us, it wasn’t really about anyone else."
Xu Nanyan’s expression softened.
Hearing this, Zhou Chiyan naturally didn't dwell on it further. However, inviting her out wasn’t just to discuss these trivial matters.
He looked up again, his black eyes nervously fixating on her, leaning in slightly, "Then, Senior, now that you’re single, can I pursue you again?"
The warm, yellow light cast a soft golden sheen on their hair. Facing this exceptionally good-looking boy, the atmosphere seemed to become more ambiguous.
But some people just don’t get the hint. Xu Nanyan, initially startled, then realizing what he meant, laughed as if hearing something amusing, pushing his fluffy head away from her, patting his cheek.
"Okay, stop it, you're just a kid whose hair hasn't fully grown yet. I’ve told you before, I don’t like younger men."
It was meant as a joke.
Yet, Zhou Chiyan couldn't help grinding his molars, especially the expression on his face, which could only be described as deeply frustrated. Being repeatedly rejected by the woman he sought for being too young was not something anyone would enjoy.
Pretending to be drunk had allowed him to lose face, but her continuous rejections made it seem like he was desperately clinging to her, as if she was the only one he wanted. If it weren't for wanting to get back at He Yanzhou, he wouldn't even bother with her.
Perhaps feeling rejected too often, Zhou Chiyen uncharacteristically fell silent, even his dinner seemed less enjoyable. He kept casting glances at her, filled with a kind of deep grievance, as if she had committed some terrible offense.
Nanyan, unfazed, cheerfully enjoyed her dinner. Afterwards, they both took a car back to the campus. On a tree-lined path not far from the school, the driver stopped the car.
Few students were on the road at night, mostly young couples taking advantage of the quiet and beautiful time for a date.
Zhou Chiyen and Nanyan walked along the stone path toward the school, chatting and laughing, stopping occasionally. Zhou Chiyen shared amusing anecdotes, clearly trying to charm her. Nanyan, enjoying the relaxed atmosphere, found their relationship becoming more familiar and comfortable.
As they were crossing the cobblestone path, Zhou Chiyan suddenly made a low “hmm” sound and stopped, rubbing his eyes incessantly.
Nanyan asked curiously, “What’s wrong?”
Zhou Chiyan was mostly in shadow, rubbing his eye with one hand, obscuring his face and making it difficult to see his expression. His furrowed brows indicated discomfort.
“It feels like something flew into my eye. It’s quite uncomfortable.”
Zhou Chiyen rubbed his eye more intensely, appearing genuinely troubled by something, perhaps the tiny gnats common along the tree-lined paths at night. “Senior, could you help me take a look?”
Nanyan didn’t refuse. She patted his shoulder, “Then bend down a bit. You’re too tall for me to reach your face.”
Zhou Chiyen obediently bent down. Nanyan looked around but couldn’t see anything, possibly due to the dim light. She could only make out his fluttering eyelashes and the reddened skin around his eye.
“It’s too dark here to see clearly. Come with me over here.”
After Nan Yan finished speaking, she released his hand and led him straight to a lamppost. The dusky yellow light illuminated the two of them, creating a harmonious and visually pleasing scene.
Zhou Chiyan didn't feel particularly uncomfortable. He merely wanted to seize the opportunity to bring them closer together. As for his intentions, he never engaged in futile actions.
Nan Yan's fingers traced his face, and Zhou Chiyan closed his eyes, becoming more sensitive to touch.
He seemed to sense her slow, approaching breath, unintentionally brushing against his face. Her slightly cool fingertips glided around his eye sockets, followed by a gentle breeze of air that softly blew towards him.
At this moment, he was indeed feeling uncomfortable, but not in his eyes—it was in his chest. It wasn't discomfort, but rather an elusive itch, as if that breath had penetrated deep into his heart, gradually spreading through his chest.
So when Nanyan asked, "Are you okay now?" Zhou Chiyuan almost instinctively replied, "No, I still feel uncomfortable."
Nanyan leaned in again and blew on his face.
Zhou Chiyuan's eyelashes fluttered slightly. As she approached once more, a strand of her hair seemed to have inadvertently fallen into the collar of his shirt, causing a ticklish sensation that made his heart tremble ever so slightly. He couldn't quite identify the feeling, but Zhou Chiyuan finally couldn't resist opening his other eye.
Only then did he suddenly realize how close they were, their breaths mingling in the air. With just a slight stretch of his arm, he could pull her entirely into his embrace.
Seemingly oblivious to his thoughts, Nanyan took out a tissue from her bag and gently wiped around his eyes. At this moment, Zhou Chiyuan's focus was entirely on her face.
Xu Nanyan was naturally attractive, with fair skin, lustrous black hair, and especially her gentle, clear eyes that seemed to hold the reflection of the person she focused on intently. However, this wasn't Zhou Chiyan's preferred type; he didn't favor such gentle girls, as he found them dull to interact with.
But at this moment, for some inexplicable reason, the way she looked down at him with tenderness and concentration slowed Zhou Chiyan's breathing. His slightly pale cheeks flushed an abnormal red due to their close proximity. The strand of hair that had fallen into his collar kept brushing against his chest, as if it were ensnaring his heart.
Zhou Chiyan's eyelashes quivered slightly, not from unease but from an indescribable palpitation. Her breath on him caused his throat to involuntarily move, tightening his chest and making his breathing softer.
He couldn't explain why, but in that instant, his mind was almost blank, save for an irresistible urge to lean closer and touch her face.
Unconsciously, Zhou Chiyan raised his hand, his fingers inching slowly towards her face. Just as they were about to graze her cheek, Nanyan, as if sensing something, suddenly took a step back, snapping Zhou Chiyan out of his daze.
His hand remained stiffly suspended in mid-air.
Nan Yan, on the other hand, gazed at him with her eyes wide open. A hint of a smile graced her face, though it didn't reach her eyes, as if she could see through his thoughts. "What do you mean your eyes hurt? It seems to me that you're just trying to pull another stunt. Are you lying to me again?"
As she spoke, her expression was unusually animated. Her brows and eyes shimmered with an added radiance, making her appear much more captivating than her usual gentle demeanor.
Zhou Chiyan felt a rare flush in his ears. For some reason, despite having been repeatedly rejected and humiliated before, he had put on a fake disappointment while feeling nothing inside.
But now, things were different. He tried his best to maintain a calm and indifferent facade, but the acceleration of his heartbeat betrayed the tension simmering beneath the surface.
Zhou Chiyuan softly exhaled, and after a moment, he whispered, "I wasn't lying this time."
Nan Yan was slightly taken aback. Sensing something amiss in his demeanor, Zhou Chiyuan, standing straight with his head slightly lowered, hid half of his face in the shadow of the street lamp, making it difficult to discern his true emotions.
If the previous Zhou Chiyuan mostly wore a disguise before her, then the current one seemed increasingly closer to his genuine nature – like a serpent lurking in the darkness, ready to devour its prey at any moment.
This tension didn't last long, as Zhou Chiyuan quickly regained his composure. Both of them acted as if nothing had happened, erasing all traces of the previous intimacy between them.
In the darkness not far away, He Yanzhou silently watched this scene unfold.
Oooooooooo
