Chapter 199 What I Gave Is Different.
byChapter 199: My Gift Is Different.
How could singing alone satisfy the little one's desire to share?
For the next ten minutes, Pei Yi watched Qi Qi, who had seemed somewhat out of sorts upon arrival, sit up straight and follow along with the little voice on the phone, learning the song line by line.
Su Youli, teaching for the first time, was also very patient, vigorously waving his little hand whenever Brother Qi Qi sang incorrectly.
“Wrong, wrong! Teacher Apple says you have to smile while singing; that’s how the song sounds good.”
“Brother Qi Qi, do what I do.”
“Yesterday I passed by your door—”
Pei Qiqi said apologetically, fiddling with his fingers: “Sorry, You You, I can’t learn it.”
The lesson came to a halt because Su Youli seemed to sense something.
Brother Qi Qi seemed very unhappy.
“Daddy,” the little one looked up, tugging at Shen Minyan’s sleeve.
Shen Minyan ruffled his curly hair, picked up the phone, and hung up.
With a “beep,” the call disconnected, and the little one’s voice vanished abruptly.
Pei Qiqi anxiously picked up the phone, his eyes welling up, his mouth downturned, unable to hide his disappointment.
You You had hung up.
Did You You not like him anymore?
Not long after, a rapid video call ringtone chimed cheerfully.
Pei Qiqi couldn’t read the caller ID, his eyes red as he turned to his uncle standing beside him for help.
“Uncle.”
Pei Yi carried the child to the sofa, fetched a small blanket from the drawer, and bundled Pei Qiqi up entirely.
“It’s a video call from Uncle Shen.”
The sadness in his heart was instantly replaced by delight. Pei Qiqi, held by his uncle, watched as his uncle’s finger moved.
Pei Yi answered the call and immediately saw the big-eyed cutie on the screen.
The background was Shen Minyan’s office. The little one held a phone almost bigger than his face, his chubby cheeks pressed against the screen.
“Brother Qi Qi!”
Pei Qiqi scooted forward, struggling his arms out of the blanket, and grabbed the phone with both hands.
“You You.”
The little one had never had a video call with a peer before—this was a brand-new experience.
The two little ones, held by their uncle and daddy, chatted happily into the phone.
Most of the time, it was Su Youli speaking.
The little one was actually a bit shy at kindergarten—not exactly introverted, but certainly not a talkative child.
But with Pei Xu, it was different. He chattered like a happy little bird, telling him all about everything that had happened at kindergarten over the past few days.
Pei Qiqi didn’t volunteer information about his experiences in City P with You You, but he responded to every word You You said.
“Brother Qi Qi, look, this is the candy Teacher Apple gave me—it’s a little watermelon candy. Teacher Apple said I did really well going to the toilet…”
His small hand held a watermelon candy. Pei Qiqi thought he could see drool at the corner of You You’s mouth.
For a child under four, being able to use the toilet alone, wipe themselves, flush, and pull up their pants is already quite impressive.
The little one had always had a small quirk: he didn’t like using the toilet with other children.
“You You, have you been using the toilet by yourself these days?”
The teachers in Small Class Five would often have the children make a little train to the bathroom during breaks or before meals.
The children were too young, so the teachers had to watch them. Usually, the bathroom stall doors were left open.
In winter, when they wore thick clothes, the teachers would even help them pull down their pants.
Su Youli was an exception. He wouldn’t let the teachers help him pull down his pants, nor would he allow anyone to watch him use the toilet. Every time he went, the door had to be closed.
Moreover, the little one didn’t like making the train either; he didn’t want to squeeze in with the other children.
Teacher Apple was initially worried. Having taught for over a decade, she had encountered young children with strong self-care abilities before.
But this was the first time she had met a child so privacy-conscious.
On the evening of the little one’s first day, she called his mother to explain the situation.
Chu Ying was well aware of her child’s habits and explained laughingly, “You You can use the toilet by himself. He can dress himself, and he flushes too. There’s no need to worry. Yes, he does it by himself at home too; we just wait outside.”
Teacher Apple was still concerned. Compared to home, the school environment was more complex.
What if something happened to the little one behind the closed door?
Chu Ying thought it over and, after a moment, said, “How about having Qi Qi accompany him?”
The next day at school, Teacher Apple patiently reasoned with the little one.
“You You, you’re still too young. Teacher isn’t comfortable letting you use the toilet alone. How about having Qi Qi accompany you?”
The little one had rarely been around others since he was young. His two dads hadn’t taken him to visit relatives much; the people he interacted with most were Grandma Yang’s family next door. His living environment was simple and sheltered.
His dads had taught him from a young age that he shouldn’t let others see him with his pants down.
But if it was Brother Qi Qi…
“Okay then.” The little one immediately took Brother Qi Qi’s hand and went to the toilet together.
The teacher stood at the door while the two children used the toilet, not intruding.
The stall door was left open. Qi Qi stood there watching You You use the toilet, waited for him to finish, then went himself, flushed, and led You You to wash hands.
“Mm, You You uses the toilet by himself,” the little one said quite proudly.
Pei Qiqi was a bit worried, afraid he might slip in the bathroom: “Then be careful when walking, okay?”
The little one nodded obediently, "Got it, Teacher Xiao Xiao is waiting for me at the door."
Children's conversations revolve around eating, playing, or sharing happy moments.
On the other end of the phone, the little one held a Stitch small water cup, took a few gulps, and suddenly remembered he had made a new friend these past few days.
"It's Lu Ting from the Small Six Class. His dad and my dad were college classmates. He gave me a toy car and said next week..."
Pei Qiqi frowned and said, "I'll buy you one."
"Okay."
"I'll buy you lots of cars, Qi Qi brother. I have money," Pei Qiqi insisted, sounding a bit anxious.
The little one knew Qi Qi brother had plenty of money, but Little Dad had taught him to accept only one gift and not be greedy.
"Qi Qi brother, I already have a car."
Pei Qiqi wasn’t happy, pursing his lips and huffing. "The one I give you is special."
"It's a customized dune buggy. I bought a little basket to hang on the back for veggies, and it can transform! It's green, your favorite color!"
Pei Qiqi pressed enthusiastically, raising his voice excitedly.
The little one’s eyes lit up. "Wow~"
Pei Qiqi curled his lip and continued enticing him, "Do you want it?"
"Yes."
"Then if you accept my car, you can’t accept anyone else's car."
The little one nodded. "Okay."
"Qi Qi brother, when will you be back?"
Pei Qiqi turned to look at his uncle. Pei Yi smiled, tilting his head toward the speaker to say to the little one, "We’ll be back in a couple of days."
