Nanyan almost wanted to laugh upon hearing this, but she kept her expression unchanged.
"Is it very late?"
She glanced at her watch and a hint of a smile appeared on her face. "It’s just past eight, not late at all. I was just having dinner with a friend. Is there a problem?"
The figure who had been sitting on the sofa had now stood up and walked towards her, seemingly detecting a faint scent of beer on her.
He Yanzhou fixed his gaze on her, "Did you drink?"
Nanyan paused for a few seconds, then realized, sniffed her clothes, and found a faint smell of alcohol. She shook her head to clarify, "No, it wasn't me. A friend was drinking beer; I might have caught some of the smell."
He Yanzhou responded with a low "Oh," his tone indiscernible, leaving her unsure of his current emotions.
As Nanyan was changing her shoes and about to walk inside, He Yanzhou caught her wrist with a somewhat heavy grip. His palm slowly slid down along her wrist bone, eventually casually pinching her fingers, “Who was this friend? Male or female? Do I know them? Why didn’t you tell me in advance?”
Nanyan frowned slightly at his barrage of questions, looked at him, and after a moment's hesitation, answered truthfully, “It was a guy I recently met. Ayan, what exactly are you trying to say?”
He Yanzhou suddenly looked down at her, his dark eyes intense, his grip on her hand gradually tightening.
"Does that guy like you?"
Nanyan’s expression froze, then she tried to wriggle her fingers free from his tight hold, but to no avail. Frowning, she said,
"What are you suspecting? I just had a meal with a friend of the opposite sex. Ayan, I thought you’d understand – we are in a relationship, but that doesn't mean you control my personal life."
To be honest, He Yanzhou, who had been suppressing his feelings until now, was already struggling to hold back his irritation, especially with her seemingly indifferent attitude, which made him even more furious, his eyes reddening slightly.
Of course, Heyan Zhou understood this principle, but it was her attitude that mattered!
He considered himself not to be a selfish person and knew the importance of space in a relationship. Everyone needed their own personal space, but he was indeed provoked today by that man's actions.
“Fine, I won’t interfere with your personal life, but you should be aware that guy doesn’t have good intentions towards you! Why didn’t you reply to my messages, and why was your phone off?”
Nanyan, perplexed, rubbed her forehead as if in pain, “What do you mean my phone was off? I don’t understand what you’re talking about. Heyan, I’m really tired today, I don’t want to argue with you, can you stop being unreasonable?”
About her phone being off, Nanyan had actually realized it when she was in the car.
She had left her phone with Zhou Chiyen, giving him a chance to tamper with it. So, on the way back, she had already figured out that some call records were probably deleted.
“Me being unreasonable?!”
Heyan Zhou clenched his teeth. He had never thought this term would apply to him one day. At that moment, he felt like every word she said was trampling over his limits, his emotions churning uncontrollably within, urging him to confront and accuse her.
“Xu Nanyan, be reasonable! You were the one who asked for a month’s time, and I agreed! Have you considered my feelings? I sent you so many messages, called you so many times, and you ignored them all!”
He snatched Nanyan’s handbag, rummaged for her phone, and then slammed it into her hand, “And now you’re saying I’m being unreasonable!”
Heyan Zhou stared at her intently.
Nanyan pressed the power button, and the screen gradually lit up, revealing a series of missed calls and messages. She frowned slightly, then explained, “I didn’t know you called me so many times. Maybe the phone accidentally got switched off.”
Turned off by itself?
Heyan Zhou felt like he was about to explode with frustration at her indifferent attitude. That man was not out of battery when he spoke to him on the phone.
What kind of attitude was this, protecting that man to the end? The thought made him feel like his chest was out of control, a sour emotion welling up irresistibly.
At the same time, another emotion was churning in his chest. He didn’t have time to understand what it was, feeling almost out of control.
“Xu Nanyan, do you think I’m a fool?”
Heyan Zhou couldn’t believe her explanation. A man with ill intentions towards her asked her out, and they even had drinks. Didn’t she know what was on his mind?
If she knew, why did she still go out with him, giving him unnecessary opportunities? Didn’t she realize she had a boyfriend?
He just wanted her to promise, to assure that she would no longer associate with that other man. Wasn't she good at soothing people?
She had kissed him in the car the other day, hadn’t she said she wanted to give both of them a chance? That she liked him? Why had she suddenly changed, becoming so indifferent and impatient? Did she really like him?
Heyan Zhou's chest heaved with intense emotions, the corners of his eyes reddening with anger. He took a deep breath, trying to suppress the restlessness and irritation inside, “Be honest, I’ll give you one more chance.”
It was then that Nanyan looked up at him. She knew how to provoke someone already angry, using his own past attitude against him. Had it become unbearable for him?
Her eyes subtly showed annoyance from being badgered by him. Then, she looked straight at him, “Heyan Zhou, what exactly do you want me to say?”
“That I’ve betrayed you? Or that I did something unspeakable with him?”
Perhaps angered by his distrust, she nodded her head, seemingly agreeing to his accusation with a sense of resignation, almost as if she had nothing to lose.
“Fine, since you put it that way, I’ll tell you. Yes, I am interested in him, I am having an affair with him. We did indeed do something disgraceful today…”
“Shut up!”
Nanyan was cut off abruptly, with force.
Heyan Zhou's hand tensed, veins popping out, “What nonsense are you talking about?”
What was all this mess about?
Had she forgotten they hadn’t broken up yet? Was she so eager to find someone else? What did she take him for, a plaything to be toyed with?
He Yanzhou couldn’t pinpoint the emotion he was feeling – was it the disappointment from her changed attitude, his own possessiveness, or a combination of both?
At this moment, this emotion was causing him great discomfort, a feeling he had never experienced before. It was as if a thorn had suddenly lodged in his throat, leaving him unable to speak.
Nanyan glanced at him, still maintaining her calm and collected demeanor, "You asked me to speak. Don’t you think your behavior today is unreasonable?"
"You only want to hear what you like. I've been telling the truth, yet you refuse to believe it. What else do you want me to do?"
What to do? He had never considered what she should do.
He just wanted her to appease him. If she would just relent, treat him with the patience she showed that day in the car, and assure him she wouldn’t see that other man again, he wouldn’t be this persistently entangled.
For some reason, He Yanzhou felt a surge of bitterness in his heart upon hearing these words.
Especially Nanyan’s impatient attitude, which made him feel like something had suddenly pricked his heart, an uncomfortable sensation he couldn’t ignore. The emotions he had been suppressing could no longer be held back.
He gripped her fingers tightly, grasping her shoulders, and looked at her with clenched teeth, "Do you feel wronged now?"
"I asked you to tell the truth, not to talk about these irrelevant things!"
"You spend the whole day eating, drinking, and having fun with some man with dubious intentions, and as your official boyfriend, I show concern and worry, and you find me bothersome! Xu Nanyan, what kind of logic is this? Have you ever considered my feelings?"
He Yanzhou felt like he had entered a dead-end, unable to compromise in any way.
She had no idea that he had been waiting for her all day. He went to the school to find her, but she wasn’t there. He texted her, but she didn’t reply. What did that mean? And the phone call he made, answered by a man, the ambiguous words spoken – didn’t she understand?
Nanyan, of course, understood, but she refused to play along. She remained silent, not knowing what she was thinking. No matter how angry He Yanzhou got, she continued to appear unhurried.
"Sometimes, it's precisely this attitude that's the most infuriating. He Yanzhou would rather have her angry, cursing, blaming him for misunderstanding her, than this indifferent demeanor. It's like grinding all of one's bottom lines into the ground, increasingly embarrassing."
"As if she doesn't care at all, not taking him seriously."
"Watching her silent demeanor, He Yanzhou finally couldn't hold back anymore. He let go of her, turned around abruptly, his hands clenched into fists, and violently smashed them onto the table beside him."
"With a loud bang, the table trembled and wobbled. A vase placed on it lost its balance and crashed to the floor, shattering instantly."
"The air suddenly became quiet."
"It was then that Nan Yan lifted her head, her gaze steadily falling on him, seemingly puzzled. 'Ayan, don't you think you're being too much right now?'"
"'When we were together before, you would go out to eat, drink, and have fun with girls who admired you. If I persisted, I was being troublesome, suspicious, not trusting you enough. Why can't you accept it now when the situation is reversed?'"
"'You didn’t want me to constrain you, to control you, saying that couples should have their personal lives. I can do that, but naturally, I expect the same.'"
"Nan Yan scoffed lightly, 'But what are you doing now? Suspicious, jealous, angry, and always losing your temper at me! What, this is something only you can do, and when it's my turn, you can't accept it?'"
"After speaking, Nan Yan calmly met the figure before her."
"He Yanzhou's chest suddenly felt tight."
"But... how could it be the same?"
"He knew he wouldn't get overly involved with those women; he just liked to have fun, but he would never do anything inappropriate."
"Yet, faced with her questioning, He Yanzhou found himself momentarily at a loss for words, 'I was just...'"
"'Just what?'"
Nanyan shook her head and then suddenly smiled, looking down, "Are you trying to say that all those were just harmless pranks among friends? Okay then, if all that can be overlooked..."
As she spoke her last sentence, the smile on her face gradually faded. Then, she took out her phone and showed him a photo of the two of them kissing, holding it up to his face.
“And what about Li Jiao? Ayan, was her kissing you also an accidental touch?”
He Yanzhou looked down at the phone, and upon seeing the photo, his body stiffened instantly.
He had anticipated many scenarios, but never imagined Nanyan would discover this under such circumstances. His expression froze momentarily.
The anger that had filled him moments before was suddenly doused by a bucket of ice water, leaving him feeling as if he had plunged into an icy abyss, jolting him into clarity.
This was followed by a surge of inexplicable guilt and nervousness, an indescribable panic, and he didn’t even know why he felt so unsettled.
“I actually…”
He instinctively stepped forward, intending to explain, but seeing her nonchalant demeanor, he felt as though his words were stuck in his throat, unable to utter a single one.
Nanyan pursed her lips and looked at him, “What do you want to say?”
Her composure was too calm, showing no sign of anger.
He Yanzhou clenched his fists, suddenly overwhelmed with an indescribable heaviness in his heart. This sudden emotion left him at a loss, as if something had pricked his heart, sending a vague pain rippling through him.
Now he was somewhat confused. If Nanyan had known about that incident all along, why hadn’t she confronted him about it?
If she had asked, he would have clarified everything. It was just an accident.
He Yanzhou took a deep breath and after a long while, managed to calm his emotions, “Why didn’t you ask me about it? If I say there is really nothing between Li Jiao and me, would you believe me?”
Nanyan chuckled softly and countered, “What do you think?”
As she spoke, her eyelashes fluttered slightly, her breath seemingly lighter, and in a gentle voice, she said, “Such intimacy with her can be deemed an accident, yet you get so angry over me just having a meal with someone else. Ayan, don’t you think you’re being extremely unreasonable?”
He Yanzhou paused, then seemed to realize something.
He looked down at her face, his eyes dark and uncertain under the light, “What did you mean by giving it a month? Was it sincere… or just for revenge? So, was everything that happened in the car that day all fake?”
