Chapter 9: Wow, This Guy’s Taste Matches Mine
byChapter 9: Wow, This Guy's Taste Matches Mine
Before Meng Ci left for abroad, he measured the dimensions of his room and had a custom kitchen countertop made.
It was now ready and delivered to the warehouse, and Meng Ci stored it in his space.
On the last day of the countdown to the apocalypse.
"Xiaoya, I happen to be free tomorrow. Why don't we invite Dad, Auntie, and Jiege to celebrate at the new house?"
"The title for this house will be transferred to your name next month, so let's consider it an early celebration."
"Otherwise, I won't have time later."
"Okay." Li Xiaoya agreed and then pouted, asking for some crabs, which Meng Ci promised to buy.
Meng Ci agreed, planning to give them one last big meal.
After hanging up the phone, Meng Ci tore off the calendar page for September 29th.
Tomorrow would be the 30th, the first day of the apocalypse.
Li Shanyang, Zhang Lu, Li Xiaoya, Liu Jie, it's time to settle our scores.
In the past few days, Meng Ci had inspected the villa and the house at Jin Shang Jia Yuan, making adjustments where necessary.
Especially the villa, its main gate was as secure as a bank vault.
Besides needing a password, it also required a fingerprint or retinal scan to open from the outside.
The walls were high with anti-climbing spikes, ensuring high security.
The drainage system was redesigned to prevent flooding.
As for the house at Jin Shang Jia Yuan, a metal sliding door and a burglar-proof door were installed at the entrance.
Every window had safety bars, and even the exterior window ledges had anti-climbing spikes.
If someone tried to descend from the roof, they would have to consider whether their feet could withstand it.
After hanging up the phone, Meng Ci drove to Jin Shang Jia Yuan.
The building had seventeen floors, and the apartment he rented for Li Xiaoya and the others was on the fifth floor.
Meng Ci didn't linger and went straight to his own place.
With three bedrooms, two living rooms, and two bathrooms, the cabinets, sofa, and bed were already arranged according to Meng Ci's specifications.
One room without a balcony had its windows bricked up from the inside.
Turning on the lights, the room was empty.
Meng Ci took out five bags of flour, five bags of rice, and some other daily necessities from his space.
There were still some leftover materials from the renovation, which Meng Ci kept just in case they might be useful later.
He locked the door from the outside and went to the kitchen, setting out pots, bowls, and utensils.
A few days before the heavy rain, electricity and water were still available, so he could cook his own meals.
After all, once there was no water or power, even if he had alcohol solid blocks or coal, he would still worry about the smell of cooking attracting others.
Taking out several buckets from his space, Meng Ci started filling them with water.
Although he had stored fifty tons of water in his space, he used three to four tons per month alone.
Even in the apocalypse, saving water would likely not be enough.
So taking advantage of the current availability, stocking up more water wouldn't hurt.
He took out two electric blankets and two ten-pound cotton quilts.
One military coat, five sets of thermal underwear, and five sweaters were placed in the closet, along with a hundred warm pads and two electric heaters.
After arranging the necessary daily items, Meng Ci stood on the balcony of the living room, looking through the protective net at the bustling crowd below.
Some children were playing downstairs, some elderly people were sitting around playing chess, and some old ladies were dancing with fans.
This lively and warm scene would cease to exist by tomorrow night.
Though Meng Ci, being a character from a book, knew the general plot, he was powerless to change it.
After all, humans seemed so small and ridiculous in the face of nature's wrath.
Even if everyone knew the apocalypse was coming, it would only increase their fear, and they might even call him crazy.
So Meng Ci could only protect himself.
Putting aside his sadness, Meng Ci consoled himself that this life was much better than his real-world existence.
Sleeping on a bed worth tens of thousands of dollars and eating food he normally couldn't afford, the only downside was the harsh living environment.
There were always trade-offs, and Meng Ci accepted this reality.
Scooping a bowl of flour, he took a tomato, an egg, and a green pepper from the fridge and made a bowl of hand-pulled egg noodles.
Turning on the TV to listen to the sound, it helped reduce his fear.
After all, it was the apocalypse.
Thinking about the news in the real world, where floods struck without people even having a chance to react.
How could one not be afraid?
After eating, Meng Ci started refreshing the news, hoping to find reports predicting a heavy storm tomorrow, but there were none.
Even the weather forecast predicted a sunny day tomorrow.
Lying on the bed, Meng Ci forced himself to sleep, knowing this might be the last peaceful night he would have.
But when Meng Ci woke up the next day, his head was still dizzy.
He had been plagued by nightmares all night, either being swept away by floods or bitten by zombies.
He even dreamed of being sent to a man's bed again by Li Xiaoya and others, trading his body for food.
Putting these disturbing thoughts aside, he splashed some water on his face to look more refreshed.
After washing up, Meng Ci saw a message from Li Xiaoya saying everyone planned to gather at the new house for lunch, asking him to buy some food and bring it over.
Meng Ci replied with an affirmative and then went downstairs to have a bowl of spicy hot pot. He also went to the supermarket to buy some snacks, vegetables, and crabs.
Of course, the supplies were only enough for Li Shanyang and the other three to stay inside for three days.
If they couldn't leave after those three days, the rain would be heavier, and the roads would be flooded, making it impossible to go out.
Entering the residential area, Meng Ci was still thinking about what else might be missing in the space, hoping to purchase more before the apocalypse began.
Thus, he didn't notice the road and almost got hit by a car.
Fortunately, a hand pulled Meng Ci back.
"Screech~"
The car stopped, and the driver stuck his head out, spat on the ground, and spoke rudely.
"Damn it, can't you watch where you're going!"
"If you're blind, stay home and don't get in the way."
Meng Ci was stunned, unsure if he was scared or something else, standing there dazed.
His mind even wandered to wondering if he would drop equipment if he died like this.
With so many things in the space, would passersby go crazy trying to grab them?
Would scientists dissect him to figure out what happened?
"The speed limit within the residential area is five kilometers per hour. You know how fast you were going."
"If you can't drive, don't. Otherwise, let's call the traffic police."
The man who saved Meng Ci retorted.
The driver seemed intimidated by these words and drove away, muttering under his breath.
Only then did Meng Ci come to his senses and thanked the man.
Seeing the man's physique, however, he couldn't help swallowing hard.
A black short-sleeved shirt, a well-built body with just the right amount of muscle, exuding masculine charm.
Neat short hair, sharp eyes, and a straight nose.
Wow.
This physique, this face, how perfectly suited to his taste.
"Scared stupid?"
The man frowned, looking outside the residential area, seemingly considering whether to take him to the hospital.
Meng Ci snapped back to reality, shaking his head. "Yes, a little."
"But it's not a big deal."
"Thank you for saving my life. If you have time, I'll treat you to dinner."
Meng Ci was just being polite, as the apocalypse was set to begin at six o'clock that evening, and they might never meet again.
"No need."
The man refused, and they parted ways, one heading out and the other going in.
