Chapter 96 What Are You Looking At, Meng Ci?

"I told you to grab it, I told you to grab!"

"This is clearly the firewood I dragged back. Do you still dare to snatch it?"

    "It's mine now."

    ...

Meng Ci stood on the balcony, watching the people downstairs fighting over a bundle of firewood, and sighed deeply.

"I knew these people would bring trouble once they returned."

Shen Que was retying the loose plank on the wolf's foot and comforted him.

"Don't worry, the government will handle this."

Since Shen Que had been reborn, Meng Ci naturally believed his words.

Sure enough, within a couple of days, a jeep with a loudspeaker began moving around downstairs.

"Attention all residents, attention all residents."

"The government has decided to select a security team from among the residents."

"Their daily task will be to patrol the area. If any disturbances occur, report them to the relevant leaders."

"Anyone who joins the security team will receive two meals a day, plus an additional half kilogram of rice."

    ...

Lying in bed, Meng Ci heard this announcement and was impressed by Shen Que!

Indeed, someone who has been reborn can predict things so accurately.

He turned over and continued reading the novel on his phone, but the more he read, the redder his face became.

This novel was one he accidentally stumbled upon on his phone, a rather risqué one.

As he read, Meng Ci silently criticized the content in his mind.

But despite his mental complaints, he found himself getting more engrossed.

He even started looking forward to the scenes involving multiple characters.

He felt like a little kitten, captivated by the story, feeling a tickle in his heart yet unable to resist.

    "Meng Ci!"

    "Hmm!"

Hearing Shen Que's voice, Meng Ci quickly hid his phone under the covers.

Realizing his face was burning hot and probably very red, he knew something was off.

So Meng Ci quickly burrowed deeper into the blankets and gave a casual response.

It was already twelve o'clock, and according to Meng Ci's usual schedule, he should have been up long ago.

Shen Que had already prepared the meal and waited for another half hour before becoming worried that something might have happened to Meng Ci. He then opened the door to call out to him.

Seeing Meng Ci suddenly hide under the covers, Shen Que thought something might be wrong and approached the bed.

Hearing footsteps, Meng Ci hastily spoke up.

"Go out first; I'll come out in a bit."

Shen Que stopped and nodded obediently.

"Okay, I'll go serve the food."

    "Mm-hm." Meng Ci quickly responded.

    *Click.*

Hearing the door close, Meng Ci waited a minute before peeking out from under the covers, making sure Shen Que had left before taking a deep breath.

    Too close, almost caught.

If Shen Que found out he was reading such material, his cool image would be ruined.

Meng Ci put the phone away in his space and switched to another one.

Fortunately, when he bought phones, he got several of the same model without cases, so Shen Que wouldn't notice anything amiss.

Then Meng Ci entered the space and quickly changed clothes before coming out.

The table was set with a pot of spicy soup, layered flatbread, a dish of pickled vegetables, and a plate of boneless chicken claws.

Meng Ci took a bite of the layered flatbread and nodded approvingly, "Not bad, not bad."

Under Meng Ci's personal guidance, Shen Que's cooking skills had become almost as good as his own.

Though, he still lacked variety in dishes.

Of course, Meng Ci didn't just rely on Shen Que for cooking.

In the mornings, it's usually cold, and Shen Que prepares some simple breakfast. For lunch, most of the cooking is done by Meng Ci.

Shen Que received praise from Meng Ci, maintaining a calm demeanor on his face, but the slight lift of his lips betrayed his good mood.

After the meal, Shen Que returned to his room, saying he needed to wash clothes, and also took Meng Ci's changed clothes with him.

Shen Que's room has a semi-automatic washing machine that needs to be connected to a generator when in use.

As for the water used for washing, it comes from snow collected from the rooftop.

Meng Ci waited for five minutes, making sure Shen Que wouldn't suddenly appear, and then, thinking about the content described in the novel, felt an itch in his heart.

He glanced furtively at the door a few times before finally taking out the phone from his space.

"Just ten minutes, just ten minutes."

But once he started, he couldn't stop, adding another ten minutes after each interval.

And the expressions on his face became increasingly incredulous.

While reading, he kept muttering to himself, "How is this possible? Can this still be used?"

"What are you looking at that makes your face so disdainful?"

Shen Que's voice suddenly came from behind the sofa.

Meng Ci quickly pressed the power button on the phone and shook his head at Shen Que.

    "Nothing, nothing!"

    His mind was in turmoil.

Why does Shen Que walk without making any sound? How much did he see?

Does he think I'm some kind of creep now?

Seeing no particular expression on Shen Que's face, Meng Ci swallowed hard.

"Uh, Shen Que, when did you come in?"

"Why didn't you say hello first?"

As soon as he asked, Meng Ci wanted to slap himself. This question only made him seem more guilty and suspicious.

But then he thought, he was an adult now, and reading this wasn't a big deal.

If Shen Que disapproved or showed any negative reaction,

he would immediately take out the grenade from his space and make Shen Que pay for his prying.

Shen Que stared at Meng Ci with a gaze similar to when he first met the white wolf, almost wishing to bite him.

    Shen Que said, "Two minutes."

Meng Ci breathed a sigh of relief. Fortunately, those two minutes were relatively tame and involved a one-on-one scenario.

    "Oh!"

Meng Ci tried to brush off the incident and change the subject.

"Shen Que, the government is recruiting security personnel outside. Are you planning to join?"

"No," Shen Que replied without hesitation. Reincarnating and delivering letters to the government was the best thing he had done.

As for joining the security team again, Shen Que had no interest whatsoever.

"Are you going?" Shen Que asked Meng Ci.

Meng Ci shook his head, "No."

Meng Ci turned his head, one hand behind his back, and pushed the phone into the crease of the sofa.

At this moment, Shen Que sat down on the sofa and casually picked up a cushion to place on his lap.

Meng Ci found it odd; wasn't Shen Que usually against such behavior?

"So, can you tell me what you were looking at just now?" Shen Que asked seriously, as if determined not to let it go.

Meng Ci tensed up, "Nothing, just a regular novel."

After saying this, Meng Ci wanted to slap himself again.

Why did he add the word "regular"? It only made it seem like he was trying to cover something up.
