Chapter 83 Who Are “They” Referring To?
by 良桃Chapter 83 Who Are "They" Referring To?
"Wow!"
When Meng Ci woke up the next day and pulled back the curtains to look outside, the snow had stopped.
The accumulated snow now covered the fifth floor of the opposite building.
Meng Ci took out a thermometer to measure the temperature—it was already minus thirty-six degrees Celsius.
How terrifying.
Meng Ci quickly closed the curtains and ran to the stove to warm up.
Just standing by the window for two minutes made him feel like he was in an ice cellar.
After warming up, Meng Ci retrieved a fragrant sauce pancake and a bowl of tofu pudding from his space. He also found a plate of fish-flavored eggplant and a steamed bun, and grabbed a cup of hot milk tea. He ate with satisfaction.
He then stuffed all the garbage into the stove, burning it to destroy evidence.
After feeding the rabbits, he sat on the sofa to continue playing games.
"Meng classmate."
The intercom suddenly transmitted Yun Jingcen's voice.
"Teacher Yun, what is it?"
Yun Jingcen said, "We just went downstairs to check, and the snow has frozen solid. We can walk on top of it."
"So we plan to go out and chop some wood for warmth. Do you want to come along?"
Although there was plenty of coal stored in his space, Meng Ci felt it was still necessary to occasionally go out and chop firewood to avoid arousing suspicion.
"Sure."
After agreeing, Meng Ci communicated with Shen Que. The two changed their clothes and headed out.
Cheng Yu, Duan Yan, and Mao Xinyu were already waiting at the door.
Cheng Yu and Duan Yan were always dressed warmly, and with the temperature drop, they wore even more layers.
Mao Xinyu, however, used to prioritize fashion over warmth, even when it was around zero degrees, trying not to look too bulky.
Now, she was wearing a military coat, a red scarf, and a black military cap.
As the two approached, Mao Xinyu was still complaining.
"I told Jingcen I didn't want to wear a scarf, but she insisted. This red scarf doesn't match my outfit at all."
"People say red and green are as bad as dog poop. I don't want to be compared to dog poop."
"And these boots have no heels; they don't accentuate my presence at all."
Mao Xinyu was one meter sixty tall and usually wore high heels to appear taller.
"Oh, how I wish the weather would warm up so I could wear skirts and shorts!"
Duan Yan replied, "You can wear them when it gets warmer."
Mao Xinyu found something amusing in Duan Yan's response and suddenly laughed, holding her waist.
"I know I can wear them when it's warmer, but Xiao Yanyan, why do you always deliver such lame jokes with a straight face?"
Saying this, Mao Xinyu reached out to pinch Duan Yan's cheeks.
Cheng Yu swatted away Mao Xinyu's hand and shielded Duan Yan behind him.
"Talk if you must, but don't touch."
Mao Xinyu retorted, "So what if I do?"
"I've known Xiao Yanyan longer than you. Haven't you heard the saying 'first come, first served'?"
"In the past, I was her senior in college, and we were in the same club."
"You wouldn't believe how popular Xiao Yanyan was among the girls in our club."
Mao Xinyu was a year older than Duan Yan, and both had studied together in the same university for their undergraduate and graduate studies.
However, Mao Xinyu worked for a year after her bachelor's before pursuing her master's degree.
Even though they were in the same year for their master's, Duan Yan still called Mao Xinyu "senior."
Hearing this, Cheng Yu couldn't help feeling envious.
He and Duan Yan only met during their graduate studies and gradually got together after graduating and meeting again at the same school.
Every time Mao Xinyu mentioned their long acquaintance, Cheng Yu wished he had been at the same school as Duan Yan during their undergraduate years.
Seeing Cheng Yu's darkened face, Mao Xinyu decided to tease him further.
"You wouldn't believe how shy Xiao Yanyan used to be. If we just talked a little, his face would turn bright red."
"He'd open his big eyes and look at you, whispering, 'Senior...'"
Duan Yan hurriedly interrupted Mao Xinyu, "Senior, please stop."
"Okay, okay, I'll listen to Xiao Yanyan. Sister won't say anything more." Mao Xinyu smiled.
Duan Yan used to be a shy boy who spoke softly when he first started college.
The literature club, where Mao Xinyu was a member, had more girls, and seeing such a cute boy easily sparked everyone's affection for him.
During club meetings or events, everyone would bring food for Duan Yan.
However, during their junior year internship, Duan Zan, with his baby face and lack of authority in speech, found that the students didn't listen to him much.
Sometimes, the noise from their conversations even drowned out Duan Yan's voice.
Duan Yan later began to train himself, changing his tone of voice and usually keeping a cold face, making him seem quite intimidating.
Mao Xinyu shook her head in amazement as she thought about this.
Those terrible students and that awful school actually turned a cute boy into a big iceberg.
Seeing Cheng Yu get angry, Duan Yan reached out and held his hand.
But Cheng Yu grabbed his hand and stuffed it into his own pocket.
"You're wearing so many layers, why are your hands still so cold?"
Duan Yan, feeling a bit embarrassed when he saw Meng Ci and Shen Que, tried to pull his hand away.
"Cheng Yu, let go of me; this isn't good," Duan Yan whispered.
Cheng Yu didn't let go but instead tightened his grip.
"No way. It's the end of the world now; there's no distinction between teachers and students anymore. Let them see."
Back at school, when they were dating, Duan Yan had forbidden Cheng Yu from holding hands at school, citing concerns about students seeing them being too intimate.
After the heavy rain started, although they had Ruan Qing, everyone lived together, so Duan Yan didn't insist on being too strict.
But public displays of affection were still strictly prohibited by Duan Yan.
Seeing that he couldn't free his hand, Duan Yan gave up.
Mao Xinyu patted Duan Yan's shoulder, glanced at Meng Ci and Shen Que, and laughed heartily, "Exactly, what's there to be shy about!"
"Maybe they've done even worse things. To them, this is just holding hands, which is nothing compared to what they might have done."
Meng Ci was puzzled by Mao Xinyu's gaze, wondering who "they" were and what "worse things" could mean.
After their banter ended, the five of them gathered and went downstairs together.
Meng Ci and Shen Que each took an axe, while Mao Xinyu and the others had two axes and a knife.
Now that the snow had covered the fifth floor, they descended to the sixth floor and chose a window on the north side of the hallway to jump down.
Shen Que stopped Meng Ci from jumping first and jumped himself.
Sure enough, the snow had frozen solid, and there was no fear of falling into the previous floodwaters.
After confirming that everything was fine around them, Shen Que signaled for Meng Ci and the others to jump down.
