Chapter 55: Sir Officer, He's the One Carrying the Gun

"By the way, Brother, I heard that Deng Yang and his group aren't planning to leave."

"Brother, you have a grudge with him. You should be more careful in the future."

    Meng Ci nodded, acknowledging this.

After some thought, he went back and took two packs of compressed biscuits, five packets of seeds, and two bottles of vitamins, handing them to Zhang Mingtian.

Zhang Mingtian hurriedly waved his hands in refusal.

"I haven't planted the seeds you gave me earlier; I plan to plant them when we get there."

    "You keep these, Brother."

"We don't know what the situation will be like at the refugee camp. If they confiscate these items, it would be a waste."

Meng Ci forcefully shoved the items into Zhang Mingtian's hands, "It's fine, I still have more."

"There shouldn't be any confiscation. Just take them."

The book never mentioned the government taking people's belongings, so it likely won't happen this time either.

"Just take them and plant them well."

"If I can't make it here, I'll have to rely on your protection."

Zhang Mingtian agreed, but before he could finish speaking, several footsteps echoed from the stairs.

"Sir Officer, the armed troublemaker is on this floor."

"You must arrest them. You don't know how scared we've been knowing they have guns."

    "Brother, this..."

Zhang Mingtian recognized the voice as Deng Yang's, and it seemed he had brought the soldiers up.

Meng Ci wasn't worried at all, shaking his head, "It's fine."

"If you have something to do, leave first. Don't get involved."

He knew Deng Yang wouldn't let things go easily. This was perfect; once most people left the building, he would deal with him.

Soon, several soldiers wearing military uniforms and carrying guns came up, preventing Zhang Mingtian from leaving.

Meng Ci recognized one of them as the soldier who had distributed food earlier, confirming they weren't imposters.

Standing outside the iron gate, Meng Ci met the gaze of the leading lieutenant with one bar and two stars.

"Hello," the lieutenant removed his leather gloves and extended his hand to Meng Ci.

"Hello," Meng Ci shook his hand and asked, "What brings you here, Lieutenant?"

"My name is Lu Chen. Here's my identification." Lu Chen pulled out his credentials and handed them to Meng Ci.

"We received a report that you're illegally carrying firearms. Please allow us to search your place to prevent any disturbance among the residents."

Meng Ci glanced briefly at the ID, not really understanding whether it was genuine or not.

    "Sure!" Meng Ci readily agreed.

"But if nothing is found, what punishment will the informant face?"

Lu Chen replied, "For now, only verbal reprimand."

"Alright." Meng Ci glanced regretfully at Deng Yang.

Seeing the hint of threat in Meng Ci's eyes, Deng Yang felt a bit afraid.

But then he thought, once this person's gun is confiscated, the outcome is uncertain, and he straightened his posture.

    "What's going on here?"

A person walked over from the hallway, and everyone turned to look.

Deng Yang, emboldened by the presence of the officer, pointed and accused, "Him, Sir Officer, and him."

"They're accomplices. Sir Officer, you should check him too."

Shen Que, with wet hair, carried a folded rubber boat in one hand and a bundle of firewood in the other, walking briskly to Meng Ci's side.

"What's the matter?" Shen Que asked Lu Chen, completely ignoring Deng Yang.

Lu Chen repeated what he had said to Meng Ci.

Shen Que looked at Meng Ci for his opinion.

Meng Ci agreed to the search but insisted that Deng Yang couldn't enter the newly built wall.

    Lu Chen agreed.

Seeing their calmness, Deng Yang feared they might have moved the items.

When he saw Zhang Mingtian, he even asked Lu Chen to search him as well, just to be safe.

Lu Chen naturally understood that no one present could leave.

If someone indeed had hidden firearms, failing to seize them promptly could cause unnecessary panic among the residents.

If the two of them took guns and did something to disrupt public order, causing unrest, it would become a serious matter.

Lu Chen entered the room of the two men and directed a search.

When he saw the vegetables Meng Ci had planted on the balcony, he was quite surprised.

    "You can grow vegetables?"

Meng Ci shook his head, "I can't."

"I just went out to find food once and saw some packets of seeds. I thought I'd bring them back and give it a try. I didn’t expect them to grow so easily."

Lu Chen nodded and then noticed the two rabbits Meng Ci was feeding.

"Not bad." With meat and vegetables, his life was better than most others.

Meng Ci nodded, "Thank you for the compliment."

"Report, we've found something." A soldier searching Meng Ci's sofa pulled out the gun from under a cushion.

Lu Chen's gaze toward Meng Ci instantly changed, and he turned to walk over.

Meng Ci remained calm, showing no fear at all.

Lu Chen took the handgun, weighed it in his hand, and immediately felt something was off. "This is an imitation gun."

Meng Ci nodded, even taking the time to praise Lu Chen.

"I didn't expect Captain Lu to be so skilled, able to tell the gun is fake just by holding it."

"That Deng Yang, I even fired a shot in front of him, and he didn't realize it was fake. He was so scared his legs went weak."

Seeing that Meng Ci didn't seem to think much of the imitation gun, Lu Chen said, "Even if it's an imitation gun, it's forbidden to use it to scare people."

"Especially one as realistic as yours."

    "Confiscated!"

Meng Ci asked, "Captain Lu, could you make an exception?"

"You know the rainstorm might not stop anytime soon, and things outside are chaotic."

"I only have this imitation gun to protect myself; I won't do anything illegal."

Meng Ci held up four fingers and swore, "If I use this imitation gun to break any rules, may I never eat meat for the rest of my life!"

Lu Chen thought for a moment and threw the gun back to Meng Ci, "Remember your words."

Then he led his men out.

Deng Yang, seeing Lu Chen’s gloomy expression, assumed he had found the gun and stepped forward to claim credit.

"Sir, I was right, wasn't I? He did have a gun!"

"You must arrest him according to the law."

Lu Chen stopped, waved his hand, and a soldier brought over a bag.

Deng Yang's eyes lit up, thinking it might be a reward for his tip-off.

He hurriedly reached out with both hands to take the bag, "Thank you, sir, thank you, sir."

    "Reporting criminals is my duty."

    "Why be so formal?"

The soldier, however, dodged Deng Yang's hands and kicked the bag to Meng Ci.

Meng Ci, being practical, accepted it since it was offered.

In the apocalypse, no one would refuse extra food.

Deng Yang's face fell, "Sir, what does this mean?"

Lu Chen glared at him, "What does it mean? An imitation gun scared you?"
